As an alternative, I made the following custom action: 1. SWS: Toggle master track output 1 mute, 2. SWS: Toggle master track output 2 mute, 3. Monitoring FX toggle bypass, 4. Master track: Toggle stereo/mono (L+R). [Before executing this action, remember that master output 2 must be muted beforehand.]

I made output 9/10 both mono in my Focusrite software 👍🏻

So that Auratone is active speaker? If just checking mono sound dont even need it. Just listen on main monitors. Auratone mono speaker was used originally to see what mix sounds like on a typical domestic radio on MW/FM. A better test/check would be to use a cheap Bluetooth speaker ( as most people don't use old radios now but do use bt speakers) A test producers in America did in the 1950's was to have a small radio transmitter to test mix to a car radio as this is where lot of teenagers would hear the music ( think American Graffiti film..)

For this to work, you'd need an interface with more than two outputs, yes? So the action is changing where the sound comes out of the interface (i.e., the Auratone is plugged into output 9 on the interface)? You didn't really cover the way you have the hardware side set up. So if, for example, you have something like a Scarlett 2i2, with only two outputs, this wouldn't work. Or am I misunderstanding?

Yes that's correct, you will need an interface with more than two outputs in order to use more than two speakers. Ironically, some actual physical monitor controllers give you more speaker outputs so perhaps that might be the way to go if your interface's outputs are limited :-)

@@CantAffordToRecordYes, seems like a hardware solution like the Big Knob would give you the ability to split things up after the interface on the way to amp/speakers. My interface has 4 outs, so your solution can work for me. Just wanted to clarify so somebody doesn't spend a bunch of time and not have it work. Thanks for this video. Using the concepts, I was able to cobble together the ability to switch between headphones and monitors from within Reaper. Remembered I had little headphone amp I'd bought to increase the volume of the headphone output on my old Tascam interface. Plugged it into 3/4 on my MOTU M4. Now I don't have to mess with the headphone and master volume on the interface.

the toggle action could have been copied and pasted in place, within the editor, since it's already there, the Cycle action editor allows this, the native custom action editor doesn't as yet
