I was in the first part of the video (the dad with the two boys that they first saw when they got close and we briefly chatted). We drove up to Smith's Mesa and could quickly tell the slick mud was going to be a problem so we didn't go far on the muddy road (only went uphill). We then saw the couple down the hill a ways and they flashed their lights so we walked down to see what we could do. We had a ton of mud stuck to our shoes. We couldn't push them worth beans by hand. I tried to coach her on driving slowly to avoid tire spin and slowly pick up speed to get up the hill but it was no use. That car was going nowhere on its own. They didn't really have cell service so I called a local towing place and they said I better call Matt so I did and sure enough he was amazing. That poor couple had been trying to get up that road for hours before we saw them. Matt came within like 20 minutes or less and rescued them in about that same amount of time. That mud was crazy slick!!

Trucker tip: Use a long, wide ratchet strap to wrap around the circumference of the tire and tighten it up until the inner and outer beads flare out to the rim. This, along with the water should create enough of a seal to reseat the bead. Obviously, this works best with the tire off the ground. Actually, Matt’s Straps would be perfect for this!!

I found a great tool to keep from getting muddy or wet when laying on the ground. Buy a Universal Accordion Auto Sunshade that you put in your car windshield to help keep the inside of your car cool. I use one specifically to lay on the ground with because they are water proof, they are light to carry, they fold up and take up little space and they wash off easy for use the next time! Oh also you can keep it folded up and use it to kneel down on rocky or hard surfaces!!

A trick for the Makita air compressor - get one of those zip ties that you can open and close, like the ones with a slot and triangles beaded cable tie, that way you can keep the button presset with a zip tie while doing something else and it will automatically stop at set pressure. Then remove the zip tie and keep it around the handle. It really amazed me that they managed to make a digital power on/off button but not a digital pump on/off button...
@dalegrover7633
@dalegrover7633 Жыл бұрын
Makita dont want you to zip tie the switch, this is from the manual. After using the tool for 5 minutes continuously stop using the tool for 5 minutes for cooling down. Do not use the tool beyond the continuous operating time allowed.
@EarlLeeBird
@EarlLeeBird Жыл бұрын
@@dalegrover7633 I'm surprised someone actually read the instructions. But still, do you want to hold the trigger that 5 minutes? I dont think so. 5 minutes is long enough time to do something more useful, especially if you have limited minutes of daylight left. Stupid design by Makita especially since there is partial digital functionality - they should have implemented a digital overheat protection like on most on their other tools or a pre-programmed 5 minute duty cycle so that you dont have to hold the trigger on the side of the road when other cars go by but can stay in safer location.

If you take a ratchet strap and wrap it around the middle of the tire (where the tread is), and then tighten it up, it pushes the bead against the rim all the way around on both sides of the tire, then it's no problem to air the tire up and seat the bead. Great vid. As usual thanks for the hard work. A trick I was taught to rebead a tire was to put a ratchet strap around the tire. By squeezing the center of the tire it causes the bead area to swell helping reseal the bead til there is enough pressure in the tire to rebead it.

@jeepindave5464
@jeepindave5464 Жыл бұрын
@@duramaxdad it's a 2 piece rim that has a spacer, which in a hmmwv a big rubber donut called a run flat that pinches both beads (thus the name double) of the tire when bolted together and prevents the tire from separating from the rim. Even the fancy KMC beadlocks Matt runs are only a single beadlock for the outside. There is no protection but rarely fails on the inner bead. The problem is that 16.5s have been obsolete for 20 years and only found in surplus military tires or super swamper tires. Also most military vehicles including the hmmwv have a central tire inflation system that allows them to raise and lower all 4 tires at once from inside the vehicle while moving. So essentially by switching to a 17 inch wheel to buy cheaper tires you lost two very useful features for your offroad tour.
@NBSV1

Most people get the idea that old military vehicles are indestructible and also don’t require maintenance. They forget the stuff was likely worn out already when the military sold it, and when in service still required a lot of work to keep in proper shape.

Easiest way to re-seat the bead is the hairspray trick. Just spray it around the bead, put a lighter next to it and it pops (mildly explodes) into place. Gasoline, lighter fluid and anything else that burns is fine for it. It's very common among forest offroaders.

Hey Matt it doesn’t always work but sometimes you take a ratchet strap and running around the tire and keep it close to the center of the tread and crank up on the strap a little bit sometimes it helps eat the beads to where you can get air in it doesn’t always work but I’ve done it a few times over the years all right oh by the way, one of the advantages of having hubs instead of automatic four-wheel-drive it get you out of the vehicle you check things out case in point with my old 71 power wagon back in the 70s 318 automatic for 10 gears hell of a truck I was out cruising in the back woods by where I live here near Kennerdell PA and we were going down this old road and I got out to turn the hubs in and I always used to carry about a 4 foot long it was a piece of broom handle and there was a puddle I stuck that broom handle with that puddle and it sunk clear out of sight even in four-wheel-drive I would’ve got stuck but you see if I had automatic four-wheel-drive I probably would’ve got stuck because I wasn’t out of the vehicle anyway it’s a stronger set up anyhow this is Jim mungai From Kennerdell Pennsylvania

We have some gumbo mud around here that gives you about an inch extra tire diameter for every 100 yards travelled; this seemed more snot-slick than sticky. Still pretty nasty to deal with, though... Good job on getting the tire bead re-seated. If the driver had driven very far on the flat, it might've been a different story!

One thing I found that helped me a ton seating beads was using a cheap 16-18" walmart bike inner tube to put around the wheel and slightly inflate. It helps seal up any gaps. Then once the bead starts taking I just pull the tube off and let he fill up.

I would like to suggest installing a dual arb compressor solution in all your offroad recovery vehicles. They can air up a 40+ tire pretty quickly. The biggest pain is you should have a 20+ foot hose with you. Power tanks are very portable and quick but you gotta keep them full.

That mud is something else. I remember driving from Ignacio heading to Navajo Dam and seeing mud flying in the air from a side road coming my way , I slowed down and out came this oil well service truck flying out into the road and pulling over it was covered in mud all that you could see that did not have mud is where the wipers cleared the windshield. When I pulled up next to him I could see he had chains on the rear ( a dualy ) they had broke and smashed the fenders to pieces two of the tires were flat on the back and one in the front I asked him is he needed any help and he said nope good to go . Never buy a used oil service truck and stay out of the mud if you do get in it don’t stop . Thanks for the video

@@GATORADDAM Badlands just released that jack at SEMA did you not notice the tight shot for advertisement? 😉 and it must be working because every HF store I have checked is out of stock.😟 Compact jacks tend to sink and be unstable in soft conditions like snow, mud, sand you know typical offroad conditions.

@GATORADDAM
@GATORADDAM Жыл бұрын
@@iffykidmn8170 I see what you're saying. But I've jacked up many a vehicle with a bottle jack simply using my leveling blocks as a base. I was a service call guy for a tire company years ago, in Florida. Lot's of sand. I've hacked up 80,000 pound trucks, farm equipment with tires you can have a party in and loader tires weighing over 1,200 pounds each. And in all sorts of conditions. Yes, we used an air jack a lot of the time, but may times we had to use simply jacks and a plastic base I carried meant for mobile home blocking. Lightweight and very stable. I'm only a part time overlander and have enough sense to have an ARB air compressor permanently installed in my rig. Nobody with any good sense would go out there with a little emergency compressor meant to top off your Honda civics 13 inch tire if it's a little low!

Tire tip: it helps to wrap a ratchet strap around the whole tire in the middle & squish the tire.. it slightly widens the beads & often can be just what ya need to get both beads to touch the wheel to start holding air.... especially if you only have a low volume compressor like that. Otherwise ya gotta do the flammable POOF method ;) but ratchet straps definitely help.

I don't understand why Matt didn't use the ratchet strap technique. You take one or two ratchet straps and wrap them around the centerline of the tire and tighten as much as possible. That spreads the tire at the bead and pushes it against the rims. No need to hold the tire in the hope the bead seals.
