This is a canvas tool bag with leather tags and tether grommets. I installed a rope in the hem to make the bag opening more user friendly. It is made with 15 oz. cotton canvas.
I sew this bag predominately on a Juki 1508 unison feed Industrial Sewing Machine. amzn.to/2svzs0K
• I Make a Cool Canvas T... Here is where I mark lines on the handle halves. It takes two halves to make one handle.
• I Make a Cool Canvas T... This is how I iron the hem lines into the handle half prior to assembly.
• I Make a Cool Canvas T... Now just put two of the ironed handle halves together each hiding the raw edges of the other and sew them together.
Here is a cut list that you can download.

Thanks for this video. Just finished making one, though I only used ~10 oz cotton duck and a non-industrial machine (Pfaff 130). Still turned out great, the rope in the hem makes a big difference.

That is great, I love hearing that! I have made bags with 10 oz canvas too, it works great for that and lasts too. My backdrop is made from 10 oz canvas, its good. Glad you like the rope, it definitely steps it up a notch. Thanks

Hi Alexander, Great video thanks for posting it. I made a couple of the tool bags in military grade heavy duty canvas manufactured here in Australia. The tool bags turned out 10 inches wide by 16 inches long. The height was 12 inches reducing to 10.5 after I added the bolt rope at the top. I shortened the outside strap by 3 inches to allow for the bolt rope. Using a 5/8 inch seam allowance the tops of the pockets on the end lined up with the the pocket tops on the side. The end pockets in the video banner image are lower than the side pockets, I guess this was a prototype version of the bag. I was pretty much forced to sew the bottom corners using a triple feed 2 inch cylinder arm machine to achieve good tight seams on the bottom corners of the bag. The rest of the bag was done easily on a flatbed triple feed machine, like your Juki 1508. Not sure how one would go making this bag on a plain drop feed machine with thick canvas. I agree that everyone should have a Juki 1508 triple feed. Thanks Again Myles

That is a very informative comment. I gave it a thumbs up. Your project sounds great, you have made a great tool bag and who knows, you may have it for the rest of your life. Those bottom corners are definitely tricky. Again, I really appreciate you taking the time. Oh and prototype, yes, most of the things I make are. \HaHa/

I just finished this bag. I used 2 or so yards of 36” wide duck with some left over. I added inside pockets using the method in the video with the larger bag with leather handles. It went together fairly easy. I did make one modification to both end panel pockets(at least from what I saw in the video) by moving the pockets panel up higher with just enough of the bottom seam allowance to be sewn under the end sacrifice panel . I did slightly off set the tops of the end pockets with side pockets. You end up with quite a few layers to go through during the final assembly! Regarding the cut list provided: I would cut the inside straps an extra 6 inches longer or so to be sure the doubled up section of the handles can be sewn to the bag. I ended up having shorten the outside handles a bit from the ends to get them to attach properly. It carries well enough with the handles a few inches shorter. Awesome project. Great videos.

Damn it! Just as I was engrossed in this video, my wife came through the door unexpectedly. I had to insist that I had been trying to find a video of naked women, and that I had not actually searched for a sewing video. She thought it was hilarious. (Hope the joke doesn't offend anyone - that's what I really said to her). Thanks for a great video. I have recently been searching local tool shops for strong canvas tool bags. Have only found innovative but cheaply made alternatives so far. But if I leaned how to fix my wife's sewing machine...

Good gosh, Alex, your machine, being that it's an industrial piece of machinery is phenomenal. For it to be able to get over the bulky areas as it does is awesome! I have a Husqvarna Viking and, although I've tried getting over some bulk areas when I sew, if I don't go slow, which I would normally do, sometimes the motor can't even handle it and it causes my needle to break. Nevertheless, this was a great showing of how you put this bag together and I loved especially the pockets technique. I'm going to try my hand at incorporating that particular feature into a tote bag made with 100% cotton. Thank you so much for sharing.

Hi nice job, i see you went straight for the serger to tame that canvas, sure does get unruly quickly doesn't it. Surprised your serger table is just short of meeting up with the outfield table to be flush. I hear ya about people not wanting to pay the price. SEWING takes FOREVER and an 8oz spool of goretex is damn near $120 ! People don't realize that its not just thread. Let alone some material can be $20-30/yard. I make custom LED lights to specifically fit under the harp. Id be happy to send one along. I have one on my Juki 5550 and another on the Tacsew.

Without ongoing commentary I have little to no clue why you were doing, what you were doing nor the reason for doing it the sequence presented. Excellent, would consider another bottom material, as the bright canvas will look ugly fast, especially on grass. Probably use a leather or a better waterproof pvc or nylon groundsheet, like for heavy tents.
@AlexanderDyer
@AlexanderDyer 6 жыл бұрын
That is one theory and some great ideas but I take issue with your opinion that it will look "ugly". I find the visual appearance and patterns of use to be interesting and often beautiful. Often things are desirable because they are rusty or have a patina. Have you noticed that most brand new jeans have replicated wear patterns? Try this video out of another bag I made with "dirt" as a feature. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aNd4l6uG1r2re2Q.html

Alexander Dyer Ney, you cannot compare wear marks on jeans or leather with grass and dirt stains on pure white canvas. Check out the Totepack Nr. 2 from Fjällräven. Nice leather bottom. However, of course this remains taste and that is often hard to agree one. Otherwise really nice bag.
