I think this video shows the traditional Chinese etiquette very accurately. In China, people want "面子mianzi(FACE)" when giving gifts, that is, giving the best and most expensive things. I think the salesmen did the nice job. Grandma replied “that‘s too expensive”. It was a polite comment. She's very happy to receive the gift. And Chinese respect “礼尚往来” (courtesy and reciprocity). When you receive a gift from someone else, you should also give him back something, no matter the value, to show politeness and respect.🙏

Unfortunately it’s not government nor politics, it’s history and the Japanese denial of that history. It will take a few more generations before the the memories of the Japanese war crimes are not as up front and centre especially in the area where he is now, Nanjing where the infamous Nanjing Massacre happened. Many in their 50-60s grew up being taught to hate the Japanese who in turn taught their kids the same thing. Can’t blame the Chinese though because unlike the Germans who fully owned up on the actions of the Nazis, the Japanese doesn’t teach their kids the atrocities committed by Japan all over Asia. Without making it explicit, what the Nazis did to the Jews can be considered child’s play when compared to what the Japanese did in China, especially in Nanjing This history is also why the Chinese public gets overly triggered whenever any slights whether real or perceived from Japan occurs, most recently the Fukushima nuclear waste water disposal into the ocean. This history gets renewed almost every year creating anti-Japanese sentiments throughout China and Asia when the Japanese Prime Minister visits the Yasukuni Shrine where many of the Japanese war criminals (leaders who led the Nanjing massacre and other atrocities) are buried but in Japan they are venerated as Japanese heroes and patriots.
