I love Johnny, I do, but I prefer Mads WAY more. During the first two movies I just felt weird with Johnny as Grindelwald, I always felt like I was watching Johnny do some character rather than watching Grindelwald. And to me it just makes more sense in terms of looks. We see a young Grindelwald in HP as well as the earlier Fantastic Beasts, and we see an old Grindelwald in HP.. and in both he looks like a normal guy. But Johnny's Grindelwald looks so exaggerated with his extremely pale skin, ice white hair, and his dramatically different eyes. it just didn't seem natural to go from fairly normal looking, to slightly over the top strange looking, back to normal looking. Mads looks were much more toned down and believable to me. He didn't look like a fantasy character, which most wizards don't, he just looked like a guy. And to quote my mom, Mads' version of the character seemed more believable that Dumbledore would fall in love with him. When the deeper relationship between Grindelwald and Dumbledore was revealed in the earlier movies I never believed that Albus would fall in love with that Grindelwald. It just seemed strange to me. But Mads is much more handsome and subtly mysterious compared to Johnny's version.

Exactly what I was thinking about, we feel sorry for Johnny, but it's not a reason to hate Mads. Their chemistry with Jude is so convincing, with only their eyes they showed the whole spectrum of emotions - a broken heart, pain from betrayal, hate, and at the same time a strong love still living in them. Mikkelsen's Grindelwald is so believable, charming and gorgeous, I really regret that we didn't see him in second movie, such a pity 😕 But we are already glad to see him in this movie and hope for two more parts with Mads ❤

Funnily enough, before the FB1 movie came out, I was SO WORRIED about JD being Grindelwald, because I always feel like 'I'm watching JD act' in every movie he does. But, for me, it was the complete opposite of what you said! It was the first time I forgot he was JD and 'saw Grindelwald'... crazy, right?!?! Had to comment because it was completely different for me 😜

To be fair the ice white hair is accurate to Grindelwald as that was the only way Gregorovitch could describe the thief who stole the Elder Wand, but all the other stuff isn't consistent with his descriptions.

I love how Dumbledore is teaching Harry about Love being the strongest, most powerful magic there is while he had this single devastating and heartbreaking experience with love. Dumbledore really is a tragic figure. Also: His guilt for Arianas death is one of the reasons why he'd die at the end of Halfblood prince.

They planned on making 5 films and it seems like there are going to be four of them because Dumbledore and Grindelwalds final duel is in 1945 and this film is taking place around the 30's. Also I personaly think Mads Mikkelsen portrayed Gellert Grindelwald very well and all the other actors like Jude Law and Dan Fogler did a great job. I think it's an amazing film and David Yates and David Heyman did a great job as always, also good choice to have Steve Kloves as screenwriter next to J.K. Rowling because Crimes of Grindelwald was more written as a book I think which doesn't work that well in a film, although I don't think it deserved that much hate. Some things were made clear in this film like Ariana being an Obscurus, Gellert and Albus' love and Credence is Aberforths son, that is also very good about it.

I've been VERY confused about the timeline of these movies. The first movie is in 1926, the second movie is 1927, and the 3rd movie is apparently 1932 (though I'm sure there's a line in there about how it's only been a year and a half since the first movie) so what kind of insane time jump are we gonna have for the next 2 to get us to 1945??

27:30 more experienced wizards are able to do magic without the need to say the name. It’s really good for combat, because it’s harder to counter a spell when you don’t know what it is. I believe in one of the original 7 Harry Potter books. Someone advise Harry that he needs to start learning how to cast spells without the need of saying it.

This movie has some scenes that I don't vibe with but I still enjoyed it. Grindeldore's relationship is probably the thing that I enjoy the most in this movie (they're like a married couple having a divorce lmao) SPOILERS AHEAD! I am (and still) quite shocked that the Quilin bowed to Albus Dumbledore and not to Jacob Kowalski. I wanna see Grindelwald's reaction when the magical being bowed to a muggle, he would have lost his shit then and there.

The plan was for 5 movies, but I think WB wanted to see how well this movie did before green lighting a fourth. I guess we'll find out. Hopefully at least four to wrap up the story with Grindelwald properly as he is still at large. The mirror world thing was odd and there wasn't an explanation, it's not something we see in the books. I felt that Johnny Depp did well as Gellert, being more theatrical, but I also think Mads has put his own mark on the role, being more subtle. I didn't really like the look Johnny was given, with the spikey hair and mismatched eyes, which I suppose makes him stand out and more menacing in appearance, but Mads' version seems to be truer as an older version of the version we see in the HP flashback scenes.

@@ItApproaches Everyone has their own opinion. I love Johnny, but his Grindelwald was too cartoonish, like an anime character, his too pale face and disheveled hair don't fit into the overall gloomy picture of these years at all. Mads is the interpretation of Grindelwald that we believed in - calm, elegant and self-confident. He looks much more like Jamie Campbell Bower, who played young Gellert in the previous movies. Moreover, Grindelwald is supposed to be German or at least Scandinavian, and Mikkelsen is Danish and devilishly charismatic, so what else can we dream of 😻

In the books, sixth-year students learn how to say spells in their heads in the Defense Against the Dark Arts class. It's more about discipline than power. It's also smarter to not say your spells out loud when fighting an enemy. If you say the spell out loud, they will know what to expect - at least that was my understanding when I read Half Blood Prince. I think they're called non-verbal spells.

I think Mads portrayed Grindelwald best he can. He did not try to copy JD's style but created his own. I still prefer JD over him just because of personal bias, but also because JD portrayed Grindelwald menacing and terrifying. He made us fear Grindelwald, so good. But Mads way works in this movie because it is supposed to show the side of Grindelwald Dumbledore fell in love with. Still I think JD was robbed of a chance.

The cinema experience was absolutely amazing. I loved it so much that I went back to watch it a second time. In the first 2 movies, I definitely felt like Grindelwald was Johnny's role but after seeing this movie I was completely sold by Mads' version, absolutely incredible acting on his part. To me, what makes Grindelwald so threatening is the calmness and subletly in the way he moves, speaks and executes his plan and that's how I always imagined him. I also love his whole appearance better! Queenie being so disturbed this movie is completely understandable and you can see her slowly coming back to the good side. It did seem weird to me that they would kidnapp Theseus and put him in a high security jail, at first, but he is an auror and someone Dumbledore respects and trusts so it does make sense that Grindelwald will do anything to disrupt what Dumbledore has planned. Didn't he also see that Newt would be coming to save him and thus would be a great way to kill them both? Using Yusuf as an infiltrated agent is a brilliant idea, he's a powerful wizard with incredible willpower. Dumbledore is so powerful I wasn't even surprised that the whole battle with Credence was in a mirror dimension. It reminded me of Doctor Strange, in which Mads' played the villain, a coincidence? I don't think so. Because the movie has a dark and serious tone, i feel like the scene in the jail with Newt and his brother doing the weird dance is needed: I mean it is so ridiculous, I just laughed the entire time. We had similar scenes in the first 2 movies so it makes sense we would have one in this one as well. The cases being enchanted was very funny and a callback to Harry Potter 100%. There were definitely some missed opportunities (for example having a couple flashbacks about how Ariana died and Dumbledore and Grindelwald relationship as teenagers) and there are some things I was disappointed about (no Tina until the very end, no explanation why Nagini wasn't there). Still, I absolutely love this movie. I really hope they get the green light for a fourth movie.

That is not how the Phoenix works. Remember in the Chamber of Secrets, it came to Harry (Dumbledore said it will come to anyone in need of help) and his tears have healing power. Credence's phoenix stays with him because it knows his master is close to death (the obscurus is killing him).

You're the first reactor I've heard comment on the fact that they are all casting silently. This is the main reason why Half Blood Prince is not actually my number 1, because the movie leaves out the big factor that they are learning to cast spells silently. Some spells absolutely will not work unless they are cast silently, and the same goes for out loud.

There are going to be 5 Fantastic Beasts movies! I personally really prefer Mads Mikkelsen's version of Grindelwald I have to say, he felt less like a caricature and I'm glad he took his own path rather than trying to copy Johnny Depp's version anyways. There are a few confusing things about this film, but I still really enjoyed it. My biggest complaint is that the reveal of who Credence really is, is incredibly underwhelming, like no fanfair at all after how big of a deal it was made to be in the last film?? It just felt like more of his Captain Jack-Willy Wonka thing he's done in the past, like a Halloween costume. I know people love him and have strong feelings over his personal life and how he was removed from the movie, but I don't think he was right for this role. Mads is a phenomenal actor and gave a more compelling performance imo. Also, I can't imagine him having the same kind of chemistry with Jude Law who is giving a more serious performance. Johnny Depp was a perfect Grindelwald. Overall this movie was disappointing, but still enjoyable. The big problems were : - Absence of Tina -Absolute disappearance of Nagini (wtf??? Not even a word about it) - Waste of time on unnecessary segments (the whole Theseus gets abducted part makes no sense. The way he got caught was ridiculous and there was no explanation as to why it was allowed to put him in such a high security prison) - Lack of continuity in event, and I know it's justified by it being "countersight" but they could've at least explained *afterwards*. I was kind of hoping for a big reveal that everything they did was connected and masterfully planned, but it wasn't. - Not enough Queenie to justify her coming back to the right side. - Not enough Yusuf Kama for us to feel he has any importance in the story and the plan. He wasn't developped either so you can't really feel for the character. He's kind of hollow. - Not enough of Grindelwald's POV and of his ability to see the future, therefore it didn't feel like a threat. - Grindelwald overall. The character didn't feel like a continuity of the previous movie, he was not impactful or threatening at all, and his design was toned down for some reason which made it even harder to think of him as the same character. - The Secrets of Dumbledore would've been the perfect opportunity for having flash-bakcs of Dumbledore and Grindelwald's youth, as well as a flash-back for Ariana's death, not just it being narrated. Those events are already described in more details in the books, but since not everyone has read them these movies would've been the perfect occasion to showcase that, not just explain it. There were good things about the movie, for example the new character of that ond Ilvermorny teacher, but too many plot holes sadly. It feels like they heard people complain about there being too much plot and too much exposition in the 2nd movie (which I really personally didn't mind but Oh Well people are swines with no taste), so they thinned down the plot to a bare minimum sadly.

I miss him too. Don't get me wrong, Mads did a decent job, but he doesn't have that same electric chemistry as Johnny does, and it's very noticeable. Mads version of Grindelwald has the aura of a politician, someone who is intelligent enough to make great speeches to get elected and who might have a dirty secret or two, but that's about it. Johnny's version of Grindelwald has the aura of Hitler or Jim Jones, someone who is charismatic enough to draw people into following him, intelligent enough to turn ordinary followers into fanatics, and manipulative enough to turn unstable followers into unquestioning killers or willing sacrifices depending on his desire. I can definitely picture a young Dumbledore falling in love with a young Johnny/Grindelwald (because haven't most of us fallen for Johnny in one role or another), but I can't picture him falling for a young Mads/Grindelwald. Sorry Mads fans, but I'm sure he's been perfectly splendid in other roles. JD aside, I did enjoy the twists and turns of this one, especially the suitcase shenanigans there at the end. However, I still wish they could have stuck with a more creature - centric plot like the first movie. The series is called Fantastic Beasts not Countdown to Dumbledore vs Grindelwald, and yet the beasts are a very small part of the plot... and I think a large part of the charm of the first movie was centered on Newt's abilities with the beasts and his friendship with Jacob. The Harry Potter movies always made time to show the trio's growth as friends which made their achievements more believable because they each contributed to their successes, but in these movies any moments we get with Newt and Jacob anymore are them doing things for Dumbledore. I will say that these movies are setting up the understanding that Dumbledore does use others like chess pieces and doesn't explain why, even though it's in the service for good. For the naysayers: I do believe the Qilin would bow to Dumbledore for one huge reason - the best person for a job wielding power is someone who has the ability to do the job well and who DOESN'T want it. That fits Dumbledore to a T, and I truly believe he would have kept Arianna's death in the front of his mind with every decision he made. However, he turned the Qilin away because he still didn't trust himself around power, and it ended up for the best because he became headmaster at Hogwarts. I honestly wonder if later on, right after defeating Grindelwald, maybe Gellert gifted Albus with a vision of the future that shows him that he must stay at Hogwarts to protect the world from future evil.

Youre way mistaken. The Qillin doesn’t give a damn who’s the most fitted to be a leader. It only cares who has a pure heart, someone who is not Albus.
@Kayjee17
@Kayjee17 2 жыл бұрын
@@ohboi9578 Why do you think Dumbledore doesn't have a pure heart? He learned his lesson when his sister died. Since then, he's done his best to teach and encourage young people to be the best they can be, and he's also tried to keep Grindelwald from tearing the world apart in order to remake it the way he wants. He turned down becoming Minister of Magic several times because he felt he would be tempted by the power. Pure doesn't just mean innocent, you know. Pure also means untainted by anything else - and if Dumbledore had dedicated himself entirely to the good of others, he would be pure.

@@Kayjee17 In all of HP and FB, Dumbledore was always the one manipulating others to do everything. And when he was asked of the motive, he would then reply “You know why I like you, Newt.” “You know you have something that others don’t, Jacob”. The Albus who was bowed by the Qillin later turned a blind eye on the Basilisk being released, let Sirius Black rot, ignore multiple Hogwarts’ threats and leaves the kids to figure it out, he used Snape by not telling him first that Harry had to die ,etc. He keeps risking other people’s lives for his plans. Yeah, it probably for a good cause, but doesn’t that phrase ring a bell: “for the greater good”. Does he has good intentions? Hell yeah. But his heart is anything but pure.

@@ohboi9578 We the readers/audience have no idea what Dumbledore does behind the scenes because Rowling wrote him as the "magical wizard guide", and in that trope he is supposed to guide the hero and the other characters in gaining the abilities to complete their quest. The Lord of the Rings has Gandalf guiding everyone on their ways and rarely explains what he does behind the scenes unless he thinks they need to know to help them go on. I wouldn't say Dumbledore acted "for the greater good". I'd say he acted to stop evil from harming the innocent.

I saw the movie in theater, my god it was awful. 3/10, worst thing in all of the HP universe. Mad's acting was good but that switch was a jarring totally different Grindlewald. The story had no structure, contradictions all over the place, Nagini was just missing all together? Queenie was just off, thought maybe she was undercover for Dumbledore like Snape was but nope, Credence was built up just to fizzle out lol. Literally only Newt was the only good thing as usual. Jacob is fine, but even his "wand" had zero purpose. What a disaster. The magic was cool with effects but meh so what. Also it's called Fantastic Beasts yet there really wasn't many beasts.

- The Qillin is driving the movie, a fantastic beast. Unlike the last 2 movies - People weren’t complaining when the old dumbledore died - Queenie never turned evil, shes just frustrated with the boundaries of her love, obvious detail btw. Wtf you mean by undercover lmao.
@ItApproaches
@ItApproaches 2 жыл бұрын
@@ohboi9578 Qillin? Oh was that the future seer that had 4 minutes of screen time? Not sure what old Dumbledore's death has to do with anything. Never said Queenie was evil, said she was off. Her character was written less then poorly in the 3rd movie. She was just there with a random hair color change for no reason. As for undercover, I meant if Dumbledore had given her the task of "betraying" them, so she could fool Grindlewald by controlling what truths to share aka via her ability, it would have worked brilliantly. But nope, the entire movie was a mess with no structure, little explanation anywhere and contradictions. Even my own mother who's a big HP fan, turned to me after the movie and said "well you were right, it was worse then the first two as you thought it would be." I said yup, weakest of all HP stuff, she agreed. Like it if you want man, but if you just like everything or refuse criticism then you've no say in anything.

I do not see Mads perfect for the role at all... Maybe only in the look (I don't know why they choose that style with Johnny)... JOHNNY HAD WAY MORE CHARISMA OF A CHARISMATIC YET CRIMINAL LEADER... HE WAS SELF-CONFIDENT AND CHILLING, AND ALSO READY TO EXPLODE AT ANY GIVEN MOMENT

This movie is a huge flop... Secrets of Dumbledore... WHICH??? And is supposed to be "Fantastic Beasts" franchise... Yet, Newt and the bests are really insignificant in the plot... 🙄🙄🙄 Johnny Depp supporters who boicotted the movie... YOU ARE GREAT

Credence is Aberforth’s son, thats the SECRET. The QILLIN is the FANTASTIC beast. It DRIVES the movie. It is the MAIN PLOT. unlike the first movie which is all about Credence. Newt and the beasts were also made a side plot in the first one. The second one was NOTHING about the beasts lmao. These critics are brain dead sometimes

I just have to say, good on you for not being like most reactors and turning your appreciation for Depp as an actor into an Amber Heard- hatefest. Believe what you will about her, but some of the things being said about her and her family are just vile. Johnny is not a perfect victim anymore than she is. People really need to learn to separate the art from the artist.
