We are getting ready to leave the USA for 6 months in the Bahamas and I found this problem with my port side Yanmar engine sail drive. It appears someone drilled a 2 1/4 inch hole in the sail drive housing and sealed it with a plug. The plug is failing and needs to be replaced but I also need to know why someone would do this and what do I need to do to properly maintain it?
If you are able to help.... I certainly appreciate all suggestions!

My best guess is that the input shaft was corroded and seized in the vibration dampener. The hole would have been provided to unfasten the dampener from the flywheel. I have dealt with the problem but never resorted to that method. Just plug it again. Someone was probably having trouble separating the engine from the saildrive. As mentioned above, at some point someone made the hole to access the plate bolts to separate the sail drive from the engine. On occasion we do this. I posted on Yanmar Owners FB Group. These are the answers. Great resource of experts.

Cory, As the prior owner (2007-2011), I can tell you that when my wife and I bought the boat that hole was already in the sail drive and covered by duct tape! I always assumed it was put in to make repairs or to retrieve a broken part. I decided to replace the tape with the plug you now hold.

Hi David! Thanks so much for your information! I hope you’re enjoying our refit. Over the last couple weeks I’ve done major engine refurbishment work and hopefully they will be running today again. I hope you’ll be impressed when you see the video… Coming up soon. If you ever see anything on our videos that you think would be of value to us… Feel free to drop a note. Cheers, Corey

It's worked for years. Get a new seal (plus a spare) and carry on. Keep the vids coming. Cheers.

as said before you’ve had a seized drive plate, or at least this engine had, the spline on the saildrive can stick and seized not letting the engine pull apart to change out the saildrive diaphragm etc…. somebody rather than destroy anything major drilled that hole and unbolted the drive plate from the flywheel allowing the completion of the job. once new drive plate and repair completed a simple plug used to covert the hole. Nothing further to do, no servicing nor oil etc, nothing to worry about. (I’m a Yanamr marine main dealer and have been for 20 plus years, seen this and done this too.)

Yes I agree with simon I have seen this done on other sail drives as well, have been a marine engineer for 30 years.

Cory, great job clearly framing the issue and showing the sail drive and details. You guys do a great job with your videos. Looks like you have a few good comments. Bottom line; good to know the what & why with respect to potential impacts. As you stated it works and has been as is for a while. No need to change out, add new plug (carry a spare) and keep pushing forward. Be safe. Thank you for sharing.

I think the persons' responding to issue as seized input shaft are right on. I will provide info on another potential issue for the future. Sometimes seals in sail drives leak, some oil leaks out, some saltwater leaks in and rust and corrosion starts. A method to prevent the saltwater coming in and provide early warning I have seen done by other cat owners with saildrives is as follows. Hole drilled into the top part of saildrive casing that contains oil, hose tap put in. Hose attached and hose runs to a translucent oil container (like a car winshield washer tank) that is mounted to wall near top of engine room wall. Hose is attached to bottom of container. Oil added cup by cup and outside of container marked on side with magic marker for each level. The oil container by being high in engine bay provides some "oil pressure" in sail drive. If a leak develops in a seal, oil will flow down and prevent salt water intrusion. You will see oil level drop in the translucent container and know you have a leak.

@@SaltyEscape I first heard/saw this done by owners of custom cat SV Ocelot probably 15 yrs ago on a blog when they hauled out in Indonesia. They now just do Facebook, but they may answer questions. They also had a method of making a hardtop bimini that I passed onto cat owner with This Rat Sailed blog and he made his hardtop using same method. Another cat owner in San Blas area did the same saildrive procedure on his cat maybe 10 yrs ago. One of the "tricks" is to drill very slowly in order to have strands of aluminum twist up and away from top of saildrive. This prevents any chips falling into the saildrive

Don't know for sure Cory, but it looks like the plug on my 630A Hurth Transmission where the filter is changed. The cap screws and expands the oring to hold it in place. Just trying to help but a guess.??????????????

Have you cheched if the rear main seal is leaking, it could be just a pumpout port for oil".

If it was “normal” I would expect it to be on the other engine as well. -it’s not. There have been several comments from yanmar service technicians who say this is a method of separating the engine from the sail drive when they are seized.
@richardarmentrout5303

Someone had trouble getting it to separate from the engine and thought by cutting a giant hole in there They could see what was holding it up, you just need to plug it again fortunately there’s no oil in that section

This makes sense! I bet you’re right. Does that part of the sale Drive/engine get hot? Can I replace it with the Home Depot plumbing part? Those are typically plastic and I’m afraid it will melt. I might just salvage the rubber out of the Home depot pipe cap and use the big washers like the PO did. Thank you!

@@SaltyEscape just measure the size of the hole and get a complete assembly to fit, probably less than $15 Amazon have them.

I am an internet expert hence know nothing about everything but your inspection port theory could be close. A Sail drive leg job is to transmit the force of the engine to the propeller. Given its power it needs oil so this could be a way to add or check on the oil level without having to haul out. Now if there is not oil in that space it is almost certainly for cooling hence it is dragging sea water up to cool itself the boat or both. This would be a way to dislodge any barnacles seaweed which could clog it. Why there would be only one is unknown it could be the owner was having trouble with only that sail leg or he found whatever he tried did not work. Bottom line whatever it did or did not do it is not stopping the sail drive from working so just replace it

I’m going to put a bore scope in there tomorrow (maybe Tuesday). From what I can see with a flashlight it looks like a dry space. There’s no moisture or oil (at least near the hole).

@@SaltyEscape Do you have a seacock or two that lets in the seawater to cool the engines? If not this is where they get their cooling from. If you do it still could of been it used to get it from but they blanked it off as getting cooling via a seacock is considered superior by some. Larger hole so greater flow and less chance of it being blocked. Again just guessing.
@SaltyEscape
@SaltyEscape Жыл бұрын
Yes, there’s a seacock in a different spot. Have a look at some of the other responses. There are several people saying the same… This hole was cut to help a technician separate the engine from the sail drive. It must have been seized. There’s no mention in the ship’s logbook of this kind of maintenance having been done. I wonder if this side was re-powered. The serial numbers are off by a few dozen. Who knows? 🤷‍♂️

No idea, I searched, found the service manual, but there isn't a hole in that spot in the yanmar drawing, and that doesn't look like a factory hole to me, I think it's a hack? edit: even the pics of the sd31 on ebay (pic, actually) hasn't a hole in that spot.
@SaltyEscape
@SaltyEscape Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I probably saw the same pictures and there’s no hole on the starboard side engine. It does not appear to have interfered with the operation. But I don’t understand why it was done and if there’s anything I need to do additionally For maintenance
