We would swing circles around our anchor on our catamaran sailboat! Even with lots of chain out it was very uncomfortable and probably contributed to the damage we sustained during that bad storm. In this video we install a new MANTUS BRIDLE which is considerably longer than the old bridle! Now it was been several weeks in multiple different anchorages and weather / current situations and we believe this bridle has solved our problems!

I seriously ordered a new Mantus M1 anchor, swivel and two bridles for anchoring and mooring on Monday for our trawler. I'm glad to hear your strong endorsement of their products.

You’re going to be so happier with your ground tackle. So far, the only area we’ve had trouble is grassy sand. The roots are thick and the Mantus would only dig in about 1/3 of the plow. I seriously doubt any other type of anchor would do better. Maybe if we had more horsepower we could have dug in further but it held well enough. 😊

Here is the thing about carabiners. It is only designed to take a load in just one direction. And any side load at all can cause failure at less than half their rated capacity. Also, they have a life span of about five years when a climber stores them clean and dry. I would guess yours are way past prime.

They’ve been replaced with shackles. I always wondered why the PO used them.
@AbNomal621
@AbNomal621 Жыл бұрын
@@SaltyEscape that is actually easy to answer. If you look the rating on the carabiner is higher than the rope. And, the carabiner is so easy to attach and detach. Though they are designed for a much different use case, and unfortunately a good number of climbers don’t understand their weaknesses.

In storm conditions, your carabiners will probably fail on your bridle. Having been in storm conditions where I lost a boat, I can tell you the forces are much greater than the 8000 lbs that those carabiners are rated for. When you combine wind and the weight of sea waves, it is a tremendous amount of force. The boat will surf and the force will shift from one side of your bridle to the other. Just throwing that out there so you guys are safe:-) Maybe the solution is to drill out the hole in your Tang so that your shackle will fit? As long as the remaining material on your tang is sufficient.

Hi Stephen, the carabiners were the way the previous owner installed it. My instinct was that they were not sufficient (that’s why I looked them up). We have swapped them out with 1/2 shackles!!! You are in the majority..😊 there have been multiple people warn us about those carabiners. We’re so thankful because we wouldn’t have known. Thank you! Corey

I would ditch the carabiners connecting straight to the bow and go dyneema if you have some. Use 2mm dyneema, with as many wraps as you can fit into the hole (individually tied) to create a large loop. If one strand fails, you won't have a full failure. But the bigger reason for dyneema over metal (really the only reason) is NOISE. In certain conditions you hear that rattling all night and it's real annoying! Calm or shifting anchorages believe it or not can be noisy with metal rattling against metal. Enjoy the bahamas!

@SaltyEscape Жыл бұрын
That’s a great idea! I was going to try to find a smaller shackle to fit through those holes because the mantis shackles were too big. The biggest problem with Dyneema is chafing. Do you think I need some kind of low friction thimble?
@meatmwax
@meatmwax Жыл бұрын
@@SaltyEscape Yeah after looking again at your attachemnt points, chafing actually might be a concern. good point. Our boat is a bit different,. On our lagoon 440, our attachments are big stainless loops that are shiny and polished. So I don't have any concerns about chafing. But yeah you might be able to fit some kind of thimble in there that could solve that issue.

Guys been watching you a while, good video. Mantis gear is pretty good. You really need to think about those carabinas and change them out ASAP. 8000 Lbs is only 3.6 metric tonnes which is not a lot! Preferably change to a lockable stainless steel shackle through that plate. Fit with the eye facing the centre of the boat and wire. A single 12mm (1/2 inch) shackle is rated at 7 metric tonnes Or 15432 Lbs. The carabinas are susceptible to snatch loads imposed by the bridal and will not take side loads or twisting that a shackle will. Do not use line between the plate and existing Mantis shackle. Again the shock loads and twisting as well as any point load from the plate will damage the line quickly. The general rule is metal to metal, line to line. unless there is an eye or thimble to spread the load and avoid point loading the line. hope this helps. Sail Safe Guys, Ant & Cid.

Yes, I know you’re right. The shackles that came with the mantus bridle were 1/2 inch and they don’t fit through the tangs. You’re not the first person to tell us about these carabiners. I’m going to change them out as fast as I can. This is how the bridle was rigged when we bought it. 🤷‍♂️ I’m so thankful for all the good information we are receiving from you and other people more knowledgeable than us. 😊

Okay, correction, I just measured them with calipers. They are 5/8. I think there’s a chandlery near us. I’ll see if I can find half inch.

I would just be concerned about a side-load or torsion force being applied to those carabiners, which they are not designed to handle (anchor lines do interesting things). They make me a little apprehensive. Nice video, guys!

You’re in the majority! It’s how the bridle was rigged when we bought it. I’m going to a chandlery tomorrow. Hopefully I can find a couple 1/2 stainless shackles. The mantus ones are 5/8 and to big for my tangs.

those tangs where the shackles attach to looked to be bolt ons, in that case a quality machine shop could fabricate some new beefier ones to accommodate the Mantic shackle size......@@SaltyEscape

That carabine is by far to weak. Should be a SS316 shackle.

Sorry to break it to you but nothing will stop a catamaran from swinging wildly while at anchor other than both a bow and stern anchor

Our first bridle appeared to be homemade and was too short. The new one is much bigger and works great. No more fishtailing and circling.
