I wanted to start offering more services via 3DTomorrow, so I ordered some prints from China to take a look at the quality of some commercial grade 3D prints. The tough resin prints are amazing!!
Order costs were as follows:
- Chandelier Piece (clear resin): $23
- Printer Piece (White hard resin): $24
- Polymer Bearing (White hard resin): $2 and an extra was provided for free.
- Stepper Mount (HP PA12): $21 and the Chinese alternative was provided as a sample to compare quality.
- Air Delivery (~5 days) to the UK was: $45
- Total $115, which came out at around £100.

Hi Callum, Thanks for posting the video. I was looking into doing the same for the China print. What is the best printing process to create super clear, (like glass) either thin wall (2mm) objects (like a head scan) or a totally solid piece (like resin) I want to attach materials to it later as well. Is that something you would go to China for? thanks in advance!

Joshua Miller Hey there, thanks for the comment! I wasn’t sure whether to go into pricing since the delivery costs substantially outweigh the cost of the parts, so ordering is only really cost effective for parts where the total order value would be in excess of $100. These parts were just for test purposes. Order costs were as follows: - Chandelier Piece (clear resin): $23 - Printer Piece (White hard resin): $24 - Polymer Bearing (White hard resin): $2 and an extra was provided for free. - Stepper Mount (HP PA12): $21 and the Chinese alternative was provided as a sample to compare quality. - Air Delivery (~5 days) to the UK was: $45 - Total $115, which came out at around £100. Hope this helps, I will be ordering more in the future, so may record these orders also. Let me know if you have any other questions. :)

Hi Atem, pleased you liked the video! Most CAD packages will be fine. If you’ve never used CAD before something basic like TinkerCAD is easy to use I’ve also done a video on this. If you’re looking for more flexibility Fusion360/Solidworks is a good option for product design. For more ‘organic’ style CAD I hear good things about Blender. Hope that helps!? When you have files ready for printing, shoot an email to mail@3dtomorrow.com for a quote. Thanks Callum

In your opinion what is the best method of printing a part that gives good visuals with minimal layer lines while also keeping costs to a minimum. I looked at injection molding but the costs for about 50 parts was just too high. MJF looked great but limited on colours. Also where can I get in contact to order your service.

hi, at what layer hight did they print? I aske them and they said 0,2mm. Which is hude compared to 0,05 that is standard in resin sla prints

So long ago I can't actually remember, but it was exceptional quality, couldn't even tell there were layers. So definitely under 0.1mm.

@@CallumColes hi, thats strange. I hade contact to wenext 2 times now and the all said, that the layer is 0.2mm. I dont know what they telling then. 0,2 is ugly and all layers are visible.

@@CallumColes its weenext. You wrote on some comment down below, that u used wenext. Or isnt that correct? I need a good company that is affordable, because i want to print out a Resident Evil House so bad, but dont find any company that delivers good prices or 0,0,5mm or both. I mean the model is 30x15cm and some companys want 200-400 Euros.
@CallumColes

That wasn't me, that's probably a random company plugging themselves, I've never heard of wenext! The company I used was Skystar 3D Printing, the guys name is Frank. By the time you factor in cost of transport and import fees, it is unlikely that they will be any cheaper. I'd suggest looking locally and trying to support a small business. Try facebook 3D Printing forums, there's a lot of people out there who like these sorts of projects and sometimes don't charge much. Although, for a hobbyist, that's quite a large resin print. So the prices you have been quoted don't sound unreasonable.

Hi Ruda, thanks for the comment, they’re printed with an industrial SLA process.

Due you recommend Z axis or XY axis for SLS parts for better strength?
@CallumColes
@CallumColes 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment. Like most 3D printing technologies, SLS is stronger perpendicular to its layers. Layers are built up on the z axis. However the technology has much better interlayer adhesion than FDM, so has more consistent mechanical properties in all axis.

Hey Callum, any idea how I'd be able to clone an existing plastic part? I am new to the whole maker/3D printing thing. I do not know how to use CAD software, what are my options?
@CallumColes
@CallumColes 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Omar, it depends on the part really, but you have three options: 1. For a very complex part or organic design, e.g. lots of complex curves, a 3D scan could be a good option. Just do a google search for a local company that can provide this service. You could then order 3D prints of the file (same for the next option). 2. For a more simple, traditionally made part, you could have it remodelled in CAD. If you look for a local print service you could take you part to, they should be able to help with the remodelling or at least recommend someone local who can. I get this sort of request all the time. 3. If you do not require a digital copy of the part and it is suitable for the process, then you could have a silicone mold created, this would allow you to cast copies of the item in resin. Hope that helps :)

why cant we use hemp ? way stronger than plastice and cheaper and better for the planet

There is a Hemp PLA out at the moment, but it’s a bit of a gimmick for now. People are experimenting with it, so I do expect it will take off in the future as a viable material
