Was going by a commuter rail station, on a public sidewalk I found a piece of metal that is used on the tracks to hold the rail in place. Gave it to a friend since I don’t have room in my home.

It is not the CRRC to blame for the choice of design and the cameras: the T wants it While carpet seats are indeed comfortable, they are extremely hard to clean, and traps dirts as time goes on. But still, having curved plastic or leather seats would be a way better choice. BTW, personally, another aspect that I don't like about the 14s and 19s is, the railfan window behind the operators' room, which is blocked by a thick curtain and could only be peeped from inside lol. Absolutely, VERY few people are there disturbing the operators, but for other passengers especially railfans, that part is never the best

Although I am not a fan of the lack of such a space, I find as a value of work design and necessity for operations. It's better for the drivers to have that extra space for them to work as part of safety, as many stations since the design of the Pullmans have been built as center platform and not side platform stations. This is the same for when the Orange Line was rebuilt, as the old Washington El stations were side platforms, whereas the Southwest Corridor are center platforms. This allows the operator to work without heavy disturbance as they use both sides of their operator cab much more nowadays, than back then.

Great grading on the T cars. As far as the PCC’s go. Since introduced in 1936. They are the absolute last word in Rail technology. Those dam vandals are the reason why the seating isn’t so comfortable. As originally they had cushioned leather or vinyl seating. They are a time machine. Of which I am glad they are still around. Unfortunately in the current rebuild program going on at Everett. They are no longer air electric PCC’s they are being rebuilt into all electrics. Also the nice thing being added to the rebuild program are resilient wheels.’which will make the PCC’s ride more comfortably and quieter. Braking is always smooth but, like you said sometimes the operator can have a heavy foot which makes the braking alittle jerky. Keep up the great work. I enjoy your videos and comments

The traction motor on the Type 8 cars are what we have here in New York with the R142A & R188 Subway Cars (A Division/IRT) and the R143 Subway Cars (B Division/BMT & IND). The traction motor is made by Bombardier.

I share your love for the 1200s, used to ride them so much to see my friends who lived in forest hills or going to college in the back bay. The southwest corridor orange line is also one of my favorite parts of the system.

One thing i noticed is that when you travel from Back Bay to Mass Ave and Green St to Forest Hills. Thats my favorite part! Because of the tunnel echoing from the rails between green and forest hills. Then and back bay and Mass Ave. It sounds like the airplane taking off because of the jet engine sound compared to the concrete rails on the orange line. It sounded the same!

The performance, passenger comfort and experience of the Type 7s are absolutely phenomenal and they have excellent braking and acceleration since they were just recently overhauled. I love the Type 7s, they are my most favorite cars on the Green Line. They really saved the MBTA from a big disaster since the LRVs were performing so badly on the line and the fact the T began scrapping them just two years after owning them, it’s unbelievable on how bad the performance was on those cars. When the rust spots began appearing on the exterior by around 2003ish, they were still reliable than ever, even though they were approaching their 20th year of service in just three years. I remember those Type 7s with those big rust blotches that I used to see pass through Gov Center around 7-8 years ago. The curviness design and flat edges on the exterior is fabulous and I love them. I never knew the Type 7s had walnut wood paneling and the 7.5s had cherry wood paneling. Cool features. The interior design they absolutely crushed it, it gets a 10/10. I agree with you there, 100%. 🤩 Another thing is the interior cutout where the original roll sign used to be, now there’s a green line map there and the black cushions on the seats and black flooring are all great. The new HVAC systems on top of the trolley are extremely loud and it gets annoying after a while. Also, the Type 7s have silver trim on the top sides before the roof and around the top ends, I also love that feature on them. The beige plastic for the doors and walls I absolutely love and the dark oak wood paneling for the front cab ends and other portions and the seat dividers too. I would give them an A. ranking on the tier list, because they are just great cars, extremely reliable and well-loved by the residents in the communities they serve.

Have you ever rode on the blue line 0600s before they were all gone? What was nice is that we got to ride the 0600’s close shorter cousins for another decade. The only differences from the two is that the orange line’s had three doors per side and the blue line’s had two. The 0600’s were painted with blue trim and 01200’s with orange trim. The most noticeable difference is that the orange line’s didn’t have a pantograph on top, but the blue line’s did. The rollsigns inside are the same but the blue line was wonderland/bowdoin and the orange line was oak grove/forest hills. Another thing is the 0600’s were built 1 year earlier 1978-80 vs 1979-81.

All I can say is the type 7 really saved the MBTA from a big disaster since those BOEING-VERTOLS were performing so badly and MBTA had two choices: fix up the PCCs which were already aging and buy new streetcars to replace the BOEINGS and they did just that with the type 7. The 7s have been very reliable since they began service in 1986 and are also the backbone of the Green Line fleet as well as the workhorses of the line.

Ya'll i'm not gonna lie. The 01200 series on the orange line has one of the best one-of-a-kind sounding trains ever. That is 100 times better sounding trains than the NYC Subway Cars. And the shapes on every MBTA Vehicles are the best. Except the 01400 on the orange line. I wish siemens will build the new orange line trains just like the blue line. AND MBTA SHOULD BE THE NO.1 Best subway in the USA then NYC Subway.

Even though you’re still very attracted to the 12s, the 1400s aren’t all that bad, for one, they are a much modern 21st century and up-to-date train car design and even though they have yellow cab ends, CRRC is just the manufacturer and yes they should have went with orange cab ends to match the orange flip-up seats and to reflect the orange line, but I had my very first ride on the 14s last year and when I was riding them they had very smooth propulsion and braking systems as well as a very smooth ride overall and the interior looked more spacious with two more accessibility wheelchair slots per car (4 total) two more than the 12s as well as considerably wider doors which is nice for a rider who is sitting right next to the doors so it’s not easy to get their phone or purse stollen. The LED lights inside are bright and bold and make the inside of the train more lit which is also nice. The new trains also have automatic passenger counters inside and mitigation gap devices which by a push of a button, rolls down a ramp so people with wheelchairs or those with baby carriages or strollers don’t have to worry about the gap between the train and the platform. So, there are some positives about the new 14s, even though I’ll miss the 12s because those cars were my fuckin child hood. I love the door chimes, the “brake hiss” sound whenever they pull off and the sound the doors make when they close and open and it would be quite weird hearing the quiet 1400s coming down the tracks as apposed to the loud, rattly 1200s coming down the tracks. The things like comfortability, reliability, safety and performance all get a A+ even though they had a few problems and safety issues, they are still great cars and a much needed improvement for the orange line. Also, the 12s design is don’t get me wrong, awesome, they absolutely crushed it whoever was the main person in the designing process, MBTA or Hawker Siddeley and it’s really like a 1970s subway car design. MBTA was just the designer and overall the 1400s aren’t all that bad, in my opinion. Trust me, the 12s are going and the 14s are here to stay, it’s happening and anything we do if we try very hard, we can’t stop the 12s from being scrapped. But I’m positive we’ll all get used to the 14s eventually but it’ll take some time, because they will be the new face of the orange line for the next thirty years and some people are already used to them.

I feel like you are too attached to the old designs. You haven't list any disadvantages of the Hawkers. The newer cars don't deserve that much hate. CRRC is just the manufacturer, it's design is chosen by the mbta, it has no rights to change the design whatsoever. it is time to move on. Cheers.

See what happened with the green line type 8 order, similar fight of that between the mbta and siemens, with the 700 blue line cars. On December 31, 2004, the mbta threatened to cancel orders for the remaining cars still to be delivered after receiving only 46 of their total order of 100. The t already paid about $143M of the $222M contract. A year later, on December 31, 2005, the t and breda worked out a new deal on the type 8s and the manufacturer agreed to supply a total fleet of 85 cars to the t and the manufacturer still had its target to complete all No. 8 low-floor vehicle deliveries by January 2007. The retirement of the boeing cars were delayed by six years. They were originally due for retirement by mid-2001 along with the muni cars. The type 8s are hideous in my opinion, all the derailments, reliability problems, axle size issues and braking performance-ya the type 8s’ reliability was garbage. The led lighting, probably modern back in the late 90s, but now, it’s just ugly and the mixture of the green, light grey and yellow patterns in the interior are not it, just don’t like it. By February 2006, reliability improved and construction and deliveries resumed; at which time more boeing cars were retired. The type 8’s interior and exterior designs are ugly in my opinion and they make the type 7’s look handsome. The boeings, even how bad they performed on the line, had a better design than the type 8’s. The traction motors are the same as the r142a, r143 and r188 subway cars in nyc and the sound of them make me want to nut and if you’re listening to them at a far distance, you can still hear them. For people who live near the green line hearing the sound of those traction motors would drive me absolutely crazy, but at night when you’re sleeping is much worse. Even from a mile away, you can still hear them that’s what I hate about them. The blue line cars were already three years overdue by the time the first cars arrived in January 2007, and in January 2004, the t agreed to delay the first delivery until September 2004, then until May 2005, third to January 2006, third to June 2006, fourth to October 2006 and finally to January 2007.

Even if I couldn’t see the RL 1400s in person, I’d say they did a good job in the design of those cars and it had that boxy train car design as did all of the cars built after them. The thing is they kept a similar design for all the red line trains from the 1400s all the way to the 1900s, but of course, upgraded the design slightly for up-to-date 21st century train car technology. But for the orange line the mbta said and looked at the 01200s design “we want people to see that this orange line is now new and reliable, let’s just fuckin ditch that old design and think of something hideous”. I’d have to say the 1900s have a better exterior and interior design than the 1400s. The 1900s design looks very similar to the bombardiers and those are just awesome early 1990s technology and I love the stainless steel interiors and exteriors, which are similar to that of the 700s on the blue line. Some 01800s are big reds, which have seats removed for more standing space so people have no choice but to stand. Cars 01802 and 01803 have had 24 seats removed (each) to provide more standing room on peak trains (24 seats each were reinstalled 01/12 after the cars originally ran with 48 seats removed since 12/08). Big reds are also known as “high capacity cars”. The 1500s/1600s and 1700s have Westinghouse electrical propulsion, the 1800s have General Electric and the 1900s have MELCO electrical propulsion. Interesting that three red line trains have the same width which is 122” and the last two have the same which is 120”. All red line cars is the same 69’06” length and the 1900s have fewer seats than the pullmans, utdcs and bombardiers, 32 A-car and 38 B-car and the 18s have 50, the 17s have 62 and the 15s/16s both have 64 per car. 01600s and 01800s are married pairs, 01500s and 01700s were built as self-contained units, but in practice are now configured and operated as pairs. 01500s were built with double-ended cars, but were rebuilt to single-ended. It is not uncommon to see a mixed train of 1500/1600s and 1700s all in one train set, because those are all compatible with each other. But you’ll never see an 1800 mixed with a 1500/1600 or 1700 in a train set, because those cars can only train line with their own group. They are not compatible with each other. Stainless steel is a much sturdier material and doesn’t rust and experience corrosion as much as carbon steel and aluminum on older cars do (for example, the 600s because they were exposed to the salty sea air due to being near the ocean at wonderland for their whole life). It’s a much better carbody construction material that all new subway cars from transit systems all around the world are being built from nowadays. It’s also easy to clean and stays nice and shiny for a while ever]n when they’ve been on the rails for three decades, (like the 1800s for example), those are from 1994 and still look kinda new and shiny when they pass and I still refer to them as the “new cars” on the Red Line even with the brand-new 1900s now on the tracks which will replace the 1500s/1600s, 1700s and 1800s by 2026.

I strongly disagree with your take on the CRRC 1400 Orange Lines. I definitely agree that the seats could use improvement, and the yellow ends were a bad choice. However, I think the interiors look bright, spacious, and modern. The exterior shape, I think, is a gradual change from the shape of the 1200s (with the hump in the middle) to a shape that's wide at the bottom and narrows toward the top (like the Metro in Washington, DC, or like the tube trains in London). Not my favorite, but not as stark of a difference as you make it sound. The silver stainless steel look of the exterior is a step in the direction of uniformity with the 700 Blue Lines and the 1800 (and 1900) Red Lines, which have all stepped away from the white style like the 600 Blue lines, 1200 Orange, and 1500-1700 Red. Again, this is purely my personal opinion, but I really like the black fronts as well, and I think that it is the cherry on top of a modern-looking subway car when paired with LED headlights (another example of this is the 7000 series cars in DC, one of my favorite subway cars). In conclusion, I think you give the 1400 Orange Line cars an unfair amount of hate. Sure, they aren't the best looking subway cars ever produced, but they are certainly far from the worst.

Confusing is that the orange line has 1400s and the red line had 1400s back in the 60s. The numbers of the orange line cars should have been 1300 to 1451 instead of 1400 to 1551 because people would get confused.

Well problem with that is the type 12s were numbered 01200 - 01319 and they couldn’t just start from 1300 cause there would be 19 type 12 cars that would be have the same numbers as the newer cars. For tracking and operational reasons they just jumped to 1400 to avoid all confusion

Nick, do you feel that the MBTA should have reached out to a different train manufacturer company, other than CRRC, for getting its new MBTA Orange Line cars? I feel CRRC did not also manufacture the cars well with quality control, as to why there are problems with them often, including a malfunctioning door on a train car after the shutdown.
@NickDaltonYT
@NickDaltonYT Жыл бұрын
Well I believe that for one the MBTA shouldn’t have just cheaped out on the contract for the new red and orange line cars. They should have gone with a company that has a good reliability track record (pun intended). And yes I get it money is tight right now, but that shouldn’t shy you away from investing in a product that can deliver a long lifespan and quality.

@@NickDaltonYT I totally feel you and agree! I don't remember ever hearing about the MBTA Blue Line's newer Siemens rolling stock, which replaced all the older Hawker-Siddley cars over a decade ago, having any significant problems. That too, I know Siemens is quite a reputable manufacturer for trains and rolling stock! I am not sure what the MBTA did when they got the new, and current, rolling stock for the Blue Line from Siemens, whether a bid was held or not. I'm not so sure if Boston actually cheaped out on the contract for the new orange and red line cars with CRRC, as the other bidders were Bombardier Transportation, Kawasaki Heavy Industries and Hyundai Rotem for building those new subway cars. I guess CRRC really outbid the others. I wonder if the MBTA should not have held a bid, with CRRC included, and just reached out to a well-known and reputable manufacturer instead, or rather hold a bid and not have CRRC included as a bidder for getting new rolling stock for the MBTA Orange Line and Red Line.

The 2008 Financial Crisis didn’t stop the mbta from replacing their blue line fleet, because they managed to do it just before it happened, but replacements for the 27-year-old orange line fleet weren’t even being planned yet, or the t was just starting to bid on a procurement. The t was in such desperate need to replace cars built in 1980, but in nyc there were subway cars from 1964 still in service. What I don’t understand is that the t didn’t have such a need to replace the orange line cars for another decade and those were nearly two decades overdue, with the cars originally scheduled for retirement in 2005. Plus, in 2012, t employees at wellington were forced to maintain the already 30-year-old fleet for another decade. I’m also surprised that the hawkers on the orange line managed to remain in service for 42 years. The 600s lasted 30 years 1979-2009 and the 12s 42 years 1980-2022. The 600s and 1200s are almost the same age and if the blue line’s stayed in service until 2022, they would have been 42 years old, same age as the orange line cars. The new orange line cars were delayed first from 2005 to 2008, second from 2008 to 2015, third from 2015 to 2018 and fourth from 2018 to 2021 and now due to covid until 2024, this would make them 19 years overdue, unbelievable. 😡😮

Well technically the MBTA signed and ordered the contract back in 2001 before the crisis for the blue line cars. And the orange line cars... well you just wait for the documentary about them to know the full story since well it is quite interesting

I started watching this with my 7 yr old son to show him the different types of trains I rode when I was his age. I immediately turned it of when the foul language was being said. I know you don’t care, but I don’t care what you think either. Maybe you should put a disclaimer in the beginning of the video warning of foul language.

From what iv heard the seashore trolley museum is planning on trying to get a pair of 01700s. They have decided not to go with the 1500 or 1600s because the aluminum bodies will eventually destroyed themselves because of expanding and contracting. The main difference about the 1700s is that they were made from Core-10 steel instead of aluminum so they have lasted a lot longer. It is in the museums, best interest to save a car that won’t rip itself to pieces in 20 or 40 years.

@@NickDaltonYT I have seen severe cracks and reinforcement repairs on the 01500, 01600 cars. The 01700’s do seem preferable with the corten steel build and being newer cars overall. We’ll see where things go with it.

I suggest that you should not say the name of the Lord God with the word "damn," or "damn it." It is blaspheming the name of the Lord, your Gracious Great God. "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that takes His name in vain." Exodus 20:7; Deuteronomy 5:11. Otherwise, your show would have been very good.
