In this video I test the Viltrox EF-M2II | Canon EF to MFT Lens Adapter Auto-Focus Speed-Booster, on Panasonic Lumix GH5, GX85, G85 and G7 with Canon 200 mm f/2.8 Prime lens.
The adaptor seems to work on the Lumix GX85, G85 and G7 although the level of consistency is unpredictable, however it did not work on the GH5, It freezes up the camera LCD screen and the camera would not turn off.
I also tried my older Metabones adaptor on the same lens and It gives me this error message:
" Lens attachment failed. Please make sure the lens is attached correctly."
I would appreciate any comment for suggestions on how to fix this.

The Lumix G90 has the same problem with the camera hanging. I used sigma 17-70 and 55-250 lenses. I noticed that the problem appeared when I attached the viltrox and the camera to the same tripod pad with two bolts. Apparently it has something to do with the total mass of electronics. After that, I stopped attaching the adapter to the pad with a bolt. The problem has disappeared for now. And if the camera freezes, then you need to disconnect viltrox and attach it back. The camera will return to working condition. I also put duct tape under the adapter so that it sits rigidly. Everything seemed to work on the last shoot.

My Panasonic GX85 started having horizontal blue lines go across the screen, then it started freezing (like it did on the GH5 you showed here) and now my Panasonic GX85 is having this happen EVEN WITHOUT THIS ADAPTER ATTACHED! I just posted a KZfaq short called "DANGER: Viltrox EF-M2ii (Canon-mount) speed booster has ruined my camera (the Panasonic GX85)" to warn other people about this. I would also like to note that I use (and highly recommend) the all-manual Nikon-mount version of the Viltrox focal reducer (the NF-M43x) but it appears the electronic version has ruined my Panasonic GX85 (it’s been glitching on the screen since using it with a Canon-mount Sigma 17-50 2.8 EX).

Tried to find that vid... umm, where is it? Lol your situation is definitely one I want to avoid and has been a concern to me about these adapters due to the sensitivity of cameras, lenses, and adapters on the electronics level. I'm less worried about my sensor or glass than the servos in the glass and camera end errors in the footage or worse messing the whole camera up!!! ......and having to pull a battery out of a locked-up camera!!!!??!!!??!! OMG!!! I can see that definitely causing some down the line issues.... lost footage, internal electrical damage to the camera etc.

@@gabrielshepard I agree. The video is on the "Shorts" feed of my KZfaq channel @silverlightphotoco and I think it might be because Viltrox didn't join the Micro Four Thirds consortium yet (maybe they don't know exactly how to make the electronics so they work correctly with all of the M4/3 cameras?)

I know this is 2 years old, but if you haven't figured it out yet .......... Panasonic uses Contrast-Detect AF, with 'depth from defocus' lookup tables.' The extra glass in the adapter changes what the AF system expects to see (angle of view & aperture), and it has a melt-down. These adapters work fine on Canon EF-M and Olympus EM & OM digital bodies, and they use Phase Detect AF, with no DFD tables.

I blame Panasonic. They create an awesome video camera but choose MFT mount. People use Canon EF lenses on it. Metabones extorts insane money for the adapter which fails several times with different EF lenses. The most sensible step for Panasonic was to release an EF adapter & a speedbooster at reasonable price. They didn't. This is why I didn't buy GH4/5/5S even though I really wanted to. With the import price of metabones I could get a 2-wheeler!

So the Metabones didn't work with the GH7, the Viltrox locks up the GH5, but do you have at least one combination that works reliably enough to put it into a production situation?
@LiveProductionTips
@LiveProductionTips 3 жыл бұрын
Well the metabones is not working, I will probably keep the Viltrox for Manual lenses if I need it on the GH5, hopefully it will stay reliable enough for the G7 and G85,if not I will probably use manual lenses with it. I am hoping I will get a fix though. As of now the Viltrox works well on the G85, but I try not to use Autofocus because I am afraid it will fail on me

I don't know why people don't just buy sigma 16mm and 30mm on f1.4, they're done of the very best lenses for this camera. If you need longer focal get also 56mm and complete your trio in your back and you're ready to go everywhere and shoot almost anything except very far objects
@LiveProductionTips
@LiveProductionTips 2 жыл бұрын
Good point. But if you need something like a 70 to 200 mm or higher then you tend to go for canon glass or if you already own some EF then you have no choice other than trying speed boosters

Hi! I had the same problem on my GH5 and my solution was duck tape the electronics of the Viltrox. I dont have the option of changing the aperture and it sucks for professional work but with this I can have the GH5 working as my second camera while I film with the S5. I don't like this solution but i don't know what to do.

@@miketemos2727 there many reasons but the truth is this is an adapter made by a different manufacturer so it’s not perfect. I have the metabones but to be honest if I was to go back in time I would invest more in native lenses. Now I have the 25 mm 1.4 and sigma 16mm 1.4 MFT and they handle most situations. I have been using my metabones mostly on Manual lenses. So no data transmission needed for focusing and aperture control. If you can afford canon or Sony and you need autofocus I will say go for it.

I know this is an old review. I was looking to see if this was a good adapter and looking for negative reviews to help dissuade me from buying one. The first thing you did not tell us is what version of the firmware you used. Version 4 is the latest I have found which fixes problems with some cameras. That could be important as they might have updated it but looking at your lens. It is not even supported. You have the original 200mm 2.8 L That lens is not on the list for supported lenses. The 200 2.8 L II is supported on the list. but your old lens is not supported, in fact there are a lot of lenses that are not on the supported list of Canon lenses for the VILTROX EF-M2II. I am surprised it even worked on your ancient lens. The fact it did work on some cameras is a testament to the good design of the adapter. A lot of people don't even read the support list for adapters like this one. The sigma 18-35 1.8 for canon FF was not listed but people bought the adapter anyway and complained. Viltrox updated the firmware to work with this lens (though I doubt they would have updated it for an lens as old as yours). So I am going to give it a try and see if it works for the lenses I have that are on the supported list. I ordered mine today.

@@JasonBagherian I used my adapter with the Olympus OM-D E-M1X. I used it with the Canon EF100 2.8 non L(cheap version) AF worked great, I am happy with it. I also used it with the ef 70-200 2.8 ii. So AF is inconstant in speed. Sometimes the lens would jump to focus fast, like on a native canon camera. Sometimes it was slow, this problem was more apparent in low light situations.. I am using this for stills only no video. But it was pretty accurate. The IS worked well as well. Overall I am happy with it. I have not purchased any native lenses for my Oly. What I have in EF lenses works fine I have yet to test it with Sigma EF Lenses. If you are expecting native speed or performance all the time, it is not going to happen, but I have a native Canon for that. I think if you used it for birds in flight, your keeper rate would go down but I have not tested this because I was doing live composite and macro, so I am not stressing the AF/IS very hard. Maybe shoot some birds tomorrow and see how IS/AF works. I have had no freezes.

@@JasonBagherian So, the 100 2.8 macro (cheep) af works in macro for single shot mode at distance it does not work very well in af-c continuous mode but it is not on the supported lens list.. But the EF 70-200 2.8 II which is on the supported lens list works well and fast. The lens IS works well too. But I have not had luck getting it or the 100mm to work with camera IBIS. It is probably a settings problem that I don't know about , you have to imput the focal length value and it has a couple of setting I don't understand. But I think it is worth it if you have a few more recent EF lenses.
