The arc angel. Beast, rouge, storm, morph, gambit, cyclops, apocalypse, the suppressed sewer mutants. It transcended so many deep human societal struggles. The sentinels. Just everything was so well done in this series and it doesn't matter what age you are. This Thundercats, He-man, captain planet. All impacted me so much.

This was my favorite Saturday morning cartoon as a kid. I learned how to record a show to VHS from my dad when we watched the Phoenix/Dark Phoenix Saga so we could watch it all at once whenever we wanted. (Man...thinking back on that statement technology has come a long way in 20 years.) I was always intrigued about how Storm was so dramatic whenever she used her powers. "LIGHTENING, WINDS! BE A MEDIUM FOR MY FURY!" She spoke like a thespian every time there was a fight.

Just hearing you talk about this show took me back to my childhood. My favorite episode is One Man's Worth, which is a two part episode. I love that show! Honestly, the Storm from this cartoon was exactly how I pictured live-action Storm to look in the movie. I thought she'd sound exactly like that in the movie, but I was disappointed.

Love the positivity you keep up with these reviews, (truly, we need it online) but for me this show is such a strange, mixed bag and I think it's biggest problem is how inconsistent it is, even internally on its own logic. You've got Storm and her "clothes lightning" powers, you've got Gambit and Cyclops walking around in-public in-uniform while the women get to/have to play dress-up to look cute, you've got a Chinese-American whose superpower is "fireworks" (it sure was the '90s!), you've got "stealth mode Sentinel" as a giant robot that's hiding behind a house, and...it's definitely a product of its time. It's fun for a nostalgia trip to be sure, and I really do enjoy how you couch it in its own context to show that it WAS an important show, and it DID make a huge impact through more than just being in the right place and right time, but for me personally: that lack of consistency and logic hurts it a surprising amount. Maybe because other kid's shows these days, even the weird and absurd ones, strive to make internal sense. This show feels like if Batman TAS ever did an "Emperor Joker" episode, only without anyone feeling like anything was out of place.

Make sure after The Phoenix Saga: Part 5", you then go to jump over to Season 5 and watch "No Mutant Is An Island", which was supposed to air immediately after the Phoenix Saga (and before The Dark Phoenix Saga), but it got delayed since it had to be reanimated. You can find all of these juicy details out in the book "X-Men: The Art And Making Of The Animated Series".

My favorite animated series growing up. I watched some episodes recently and there is some symbolism in the narratives that I didn’t notice as a kid. Example; in the “ENTER MAGNETO” episode when Magneto visits Beast at jail, their exchange and appearance was a reflection of their emotions and character. Magneto’s bright red uniform symbolized his rage and anger at hateful humans. Beast’s blue fur symbolized his calmness, hopefulness, and rationality. Amazing show! I miss the pop culture from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.
