Retrospective on Static Shock animated series from 2000-2004 on KidsWB (with reruns on Cartoon Network and even DisneyXD) based on the Milestone Comics / DC Comics character. Static Shock cartoons star Virgil Hawkins as Static the DC Superhero who with his best friend Richie / Gear saves the city of Dakota from metahumans, even sometimes teaming up with Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, and Justice League to fight villains like The Joker, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Sinestro, and more. 50 Episodes of Static Shock are now available on HBO Max.
AD: HBO Max is the place where I watch all my favorite DC movies, series, and my personal favorite, nostalgia DC cartoons like Batman and Superman the Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, Static Shock, even Superfriends! But I have to give a special shoutout to its original series like Titans (Season 3 out now), Doom Patrol (Season 3 coming soon), and Harley Quinn (can't wait for Season 3)! What are your favorite DC titles to watch on HBO Max?
Static Shock (2000-2004) Warner Bros. / HBO Max.

There is no way Warner Bros is going to get involved enough into the Milestone Comics independent publisher situation. Don't expect Static live action soon. Milestone even independently ran a Static Line where Static's exposure to the Gas was a Black Lives Matter crackdown by the cops. Which I will give credit is a brilliant idea over Virgil or homeless girl being close to a gang war. But anyway Milestone is making a good faith effort to say he's our character and not just some cartoon version we Licsenced to DC animated universe. It's one of those weird things off 90s comics where they licensed stuff like Swamp Man or Sandman, and kind of never had full rights to the IP at DC.

For an interesting real world perspective, I was working on a project in North Africa (Morocco) many years ago and one of my co-workers said " I wondered if there would be some type of "coming Home" feeling when I came to Africa. My favorite sight gag in Static is a later episode where a repentant Rubber Band Man got framed and is working with Virgil's sister to avoid getting caught. He ends up transforming into a vacuum cleaner to avoid detection from the family which Sharon then had to wheel out of the room; unfortunately for her he still weighs as much as a full grown man and Sharon is forced to full on drag him out because apparently "wheels are hard."😄

Kurogiri from My Hero Academia is very similar in terms of power and appearance. That's another show you should check out if you're willing to give anime a chance. It's definitely overrated in the general community but I highly recommend it to anybody interested in super hero stuff. Basic premise is imagine the universe of X-men several generations in the future. Where now instead of those with super powers being the minority and oppressed the exact opposite is true here. Now those without powers are the odd ones out and being a hero is just another job like a police officer or a fire fighter. Though sadly the series doesn't show oppression of those without power beyond the main character who was bullied because of said reason. Honestly the only real reason of inequality for those without powers isn't a brought up topic is there's so few that it's just not an issue. All throughout the series literally only 3 characters were born without a quirk (which is what this universe calls powers). One of of which is over 50 years old and another only appears in the first movie which is debatable on whether or it's canon. The series even goes as far to say quirkless people are almost nonexistent in the current generation which is a far cry from the 20% said in episode 1. I assume that's an overall statistic which includes adults and elderly, and not a 1 in 5 baby are quirkless scenario.

Static shock is the Black TV show that we really need it isn't in your face or preachy? @@TheEnigmaticBM39 a show becomes preaching the second they make the Identity or practice of the character the only thing that's talked about. Compare it to a book like apocalypse machine where the main character continuously says I know a little about everything I have two wives it's so great. tell me is that not preaching? Blackish is an extreme example of it. the entire show is based around black problems black this but the characters never go far enough to have their own identity. When I grew up static shock was a hero. Too long the read a show becomes preachy the second they take the audience for a fool. they consistently tried to tell us what they're trying to get to us. never actually showing us the problem a classic case of tail not show. Recently started the kiddo on this show, and got to "that episode" and loved it. Haven't gotten to the crossover episodes yet, but I remember an older Static showing up in Justice League Unlimited The Once & Future Thing 2. In the episode GL brings up that he knows Static. While thinking about "that episode" I'm reminded of the episode Legends from Justice League, where some of the team members are shunted into an alternate universe to team up with the Justice Society. In this episode there are a few scenes that contrast views on equality, and the evolution of comics. Such as Hawkgirl being asked to go into the kitchen while the men talk, and Green Lantern being called a credit to his people. I remember watching this when it first aired and thinking that was a bold move, but we don't see the kind of evolution of beliefs "that episode" of Static Shock gives us. Instead we are shown that these ideals are outdated and held by someone who refuses to move forward in life.

As A OG 5 year old watching BATAS AS IT AIRED! Sons of the Fathers is bar none, the BEST DC has ever put out. It was nearly perfect. I just wish we got to hear the conversation between Virgil and his father. I would love to know what they talked about, how emotional it was and everything that was going through the boy’s head. GAH I love that episode. Ritchie’s father was perfectly played to his character and the best thing is, with Ritchie being gay, if they allowed that back then, we would’ve gotten to see his father being potentially even more accepting AND THAT is far more important than punching, laser zapping, flying and beating up bad guys. Thank you Satic, for an amazing childhood that taught me anyone can be a superhero and it doesn’t matter what you look like. What matters is that you care about what you’re doing, the people you can help annnnnnd maybe have a boppin theme song to go along doesn’t hurt ;)

I think one of the episodes I remember the most is when Adam/Rubber Band Man was turning over a new leaf and became a hero in the eyes of the public. He had been getting fanmail as a result, but after Virgil asks him why he hasn't replied to any of it, it turned out Adam suffered from dyslexia. The episode was about identifying and learning how to deal with someone with dyslexia as Adam learned how to deal with it himself. I'm not a dyslexic myself, but the POV the episode had on Adam was eye opening and made me more accepting and understanding of true dyslexics despite how dyslexia is used as a joke all the time in our society for simple mistakes of misreading things.

It would have been so sweet to see Virgil supporting his friend through that. Or not, he didn't initially react all that well in the comics, but I can't see show Virgil doing that.

10:37 Permafrost!! I loved her as a kid and still do! A Homeless girl who wanted to be alone due to losing her mother but is jealous of families being happy while she is miserable and Static, Mm! Her character gave Static the opportunity to show me how kind of character he is.

Listen man, being a young black kid from the U.K. when Static Shock dropped did so much for me and I didn’t even realise at the time. Having that representation at a young age was so important and it’s soo nuts that the storylines are relevant today. I remember there was even a episode were Static talks about dyslexia! Like they really touched every based… and him getting to know his Ghanaian roots was nuts because what other cartoon was doing that ??? Big thanks to Dwayne McDuffie because this hero is actually elite!

My favorite part of Static Shock hands down is the music. That hip hop is like the soul and is what really made the series distinct.

One of my favorite parts about that Green Lantern episode was that they figured it out because Sinestro was too flashy using the ring compared to John Stewart's more taciturn style.

I used to love this show! My mom would watch it with me sometimes. I cried when they stopped playing reruns of it on Disney XD. I was eleven at the time. I'm 24 now, and I finally got to rewatch it on HBO Max and it's as awesome as I remember! The theme song is different than I remember, but since Andre said there were different theme songs, I guess that's why I remember a different theme song then the one for the first season. I used to love the song!

I love how much you love what you love. Watching you geek out reminds me of myself. I'm completely your older play cousin. Raising my sons, they have definitely seen their mother geek out about the series of my youth (Speed Racer - the original, Johnny Socko and His Flying Robot, Astro Boy, Ultraman et al) Sharing those shows and watching them catch the feeling. Few things are like being able to share that kind of love, joy, and excitement. They're all adults now and I'm fortunate enough to still crowd on the sofa and watch the latest JoJo or rewatch and argue over Hunter x Hunter characters along with many other shows. But, in addition to my enjoyment of my kids, I thoroughly enjoy the time I spend watching your channel. As you touched upon in your discussion of Static Shock, being able to see others similar to myself engaging in activities I enjoy not commonly available to me is a satisfying feeling. I appreciate your work. You do it very well. And, I'm proud of you for the quality production you've built. Well done my play cousin!

Static is underrated, people keep talking about Spiderman and how his story is more relatable and more realistically down to earth. But Static Shock touches on subjects that Spiderman hasn't like racism, homeless people, and school bullying And also he decided to be a hero not because he abuses his power and innocent people got killed, it's because he's a good kid who got brought up well

Getting nostalgic about Static really makes me want to see Sync in the MCU. Back in the 90s, gangster movies were popular, gangster rap was growing in popularity. While this was giving a voice to African-Americans who weren't heard before, it also played into some negative stereotypes among white people. The writer who created the character Sync said that he was challenging those growing stereotypes. He ticks all the boxes of what white people think of when someone says they are from the projects. He was raised by his grandmother because his mother was on drugs. He grew up in a very poor, crime-ridden neighborhood. Despite all that, he's a well-adjusted, down-to-Earth, likable guy. At the time, he was the most sane, reliable person at Xavier's mansion. He's not as cheerful as Static, but still, it's good to challenge the stereotypes of people who grew up in poor, rough neighborhoods.
