No it’s in the Eu. It was the Eu who decided that these bikes needed type approval. Since brexit, we decided to keep the type approval requirement, however, the dft are now i consultation to change this. Given that type approval isn’t possible in the EU, these kind of bikes are still illegal over there. However, given that type approval is possible for the uk via the DVsA approval route, they are perfectly legal here :)

As you just demonstrated, no loophole is needed, because Dibble doesn't give a stuff. If you want extra security, wear a puffa jacket with a DeliverEats bag on your back, don't have any lights and ride with your mobile phone in your hand. Then you can blast your 750W Allegro electric motorcycle at 30mph on pavements without anyone blinking twice. There's no point in being legal when criminality is never sanctioned.

Regular e-bikes of the more premium mid-mounted motor kind usually has a torgue sensor that starts giving you power just by pushing down on one pedal from a standstill (with one foot still on the ground). Unlike the cheaper wheel-mounted motors which may only have a cadence sensor, aka they only gives you power after you get the cranks turning a bit.
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665
@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 Ай бұрын
@@Erafune The key words premium ... they can be a lot more expensive and if you have health problems bad knees etc bad ones are no use. The other is buying a dedicated electric bike when you have one or more existing quality bikes sized to fit or already kitted out for cargo, touring or other duties you have big problems and added expenses converting.. if you have a motor in wheel kit you can swap it between same size wheel bikes and control it from a throttle ..like a MC.. you can always restrict top speed incase the car drivers stuck in traffic get too angry and try running you down or belting past you then turning across you at the next junction. There's also no way of running a pusher cargo or kiddie trailer that can otherwise be swapped between multiple bikes and do multiple jobs ..and also removed and still left behind...the most logical solution, if you want or need to leave the wt bulk or risk of a Epower system behind all you do is unhitch and unplug the trailer...and a throttle controller display unit. The Germans even offer a wireless throttle system and integrated display. But that would be too helpful and cut the manufacturers out of a third of the market...and the Premium price tags..that 60% of bicycle 🚲 users could never afford . So how about increasing the Wattage allowance ...you can still cap speed ...so larger people and busy people can get small kids to nurseries and schools and get heavy loads home using the many bikes we have already. 🙄 To stop the waste and limit the pollution of producing more bikes that often cannot be ridden really when they are flat or develope a fault.. and you cannot get replacement parts for once the manufacturers chang their model specs every two or three years. Oh yes that's what they learned from the Auto trade. 🤷🏻‍♂️🧙🏼‍♂️

So many people cycling around illegally, do the police ever check? I was in Leicester during the week and the city centre is plagued with fast food delivery guys speeding around on electric bikes, very few are using pedals and no way they are restricted to 15.5 mph.
@segue2ant395
@segue2ant395 Ай бұрын
Checks are nearly impossible; a hard and fast crime is a marked motor wattage of over 250W, no pedal-assist, or a speed over 15.5mph. It's very easy to re-mark a motor as being a lower wattage than it really is, knowing if a bike truly has pedal-assist is only done by riding it (although granted, if it has no pedals - dead giveaway!), and the average bobby can't run at more than about 7mph (or 5.5mph after lunchtime). Solving the problem would be a case of overhauling public and private transport as well as pedestrianism; at the end of the day I'd rather we had the technology and used it safely than banned it and forced its users to therefore be always-unsafe. No government wants to bother with that though, so they're just kinda ignoring the issue as long as there are bigger problems to deal with.

Lets be logical here. On basic numbers alone. Do you really think police have that much manpower or time to stop THAT many riders on 1000w+ ebikes. It would be the absolute biggest waste of police resources ever! And even if they could, and they took all the powerfull bikes off the road. For as little as £600 you could just build yourself another 1000w ebike and be right back at it again. Its not even worth pursuing them. And The police know this better than anyone.
@DelticEngine
@DelticEngine Ай бұрын
It's not a loophole. It just proves a specific ebike meets the criteria set out by the standard. There's nothing to stop anyone else putting their existing throttle ebike through an SVA test. All the information is available. Even a more powerful ebike can be put through an SVA test and ridden as a moped, scooter or motorcycle. It's all possible and could work out cheaper than buying and electric moped or scooter from the outset. People build their own cars and motorcycles, so why not?

its worth mentioning though that if you get your ebike SVA certified as a moped or motorbike, then you can no longer ride it in cycle lanes... which in my opinion defeats the point of owning an ebike (there is an arguement for it being more environmentally friendly yes) as you can no longer take the shortcuts or scenic routes. You may as well just own a moped/motorbike at that point as they will go much faster and do not need to through the hassle/cost of getting certified for road use

The best part about a throttle on these little ebikes is that at a complete stop at an intersection is that it gets you OUT of the way of cars at the intersection. The cars are not waiting for the rider getting frustrated waiting for "that damn bike", We zip into the bike lane in better control, out of the way, no wobble. You know how rider and bikes wobble at the start? Which aggravates the car driver... I bet you do a study proving that the throttle, going up to 15-18mph in a smooth fashion may actually change the law? Its safer for sure. Cheers.

General requirements - EAPC classification The EAPC regulations[footnote 1] as amended[footnote 2] set out the requirements that EAPCs must satisfy if they are not to be treated as motor vehicles when used on roads in GB - i.e. do not need to be licensed and registered etc. The requirements are the: cycle must be fitted with pedals that are capable of propelling it. maximum continuous rated power of the electric motor must not exceed 250 Watts. electrical assistance must cut-off when the vehicle reaches 15.5 mph (Note: the previous limit on motor power for bicycles and the restrictions on weight, and the number of wheels an EAPC may have, were removed on 6 April 2015). An EAPC which complies with the above is not considered to be a motor vehicle within the meaning of the ‘Road traffic regulation act 1984’ and the ‘Road traffic act 1988’. As a result, it is not required to be registered or subject to vehicle excise duty (road tax), and does not have to be insured as a motor vehicle. However, EAPCs must not be ridden by anyone under the age of 14 years[footnote 3]. Power assistance - “Twist and Go” Because of the particular benefits for elderly and disabled users, pedal cycles providing electrical assistance without use of the pedals - usually called “Twist and Goes” - are included in the above GB classification provided they are capable of pedal operation and comply with the above restrictions on maximum motor power and assistance cut-off speed. However, under European law[footnote 4] new “Twist and Go” vehicles will, from January 2016, have to meet a range of technical requirements before they can be used on roads. This will normally be established by “type approval” at the manufacturing stage but importers and individuals will be able to seek an individual approval for vehicles that have not been type approved.

Looks handy , but how long is that battery going to last range wise without pedalling , you can guarantee that oldies and people that just want to get from point A To point B without effort will use it that way. And I’m not being disparaging about that , just saying some people will use it that way. The pedal position is a fail imo , or is it the non adjustable seat ? Nothing wrong with lead acid as long its in the right vehicle. I met today a man driving a 45 km/h electric "Tuctuc". We talked about it a bit and it turned out he got it 50% off from a store BRAND NEW, instead of 3000€ "just" 1500€ because it got somehow (its new!?) a dent in the loading space. 1500€, this thing goes with 60V (5x 12V) Lead Acid batteries over 40 km, drive in fast gear 40-45 and in slow gear 20 km/h and EVERY HILL UP. The loading area has even seats to pull out and he transported 2 grandchildren and some toys. I would prefer Lead Acid at any heavier/bigger vehicle such as a basic TucTuc, but sadly on our scooters and bikes if we need moderate range we need some better batteries, namely Lithium Ion.

The fact that the builder has to certify every single one separately really tells you how silly the ebike law is! Even in Belgium they have throttle and up to 1000 Watt (that's Bafang H550, for example) exempted upon type-approval. Simply because Belgium was the wisest EU country and essentially merged L1e-A vehicles with official EAPCs (as long as the top speed is 25 kph).
@nickwinn7812
@nickwinn7812 Ай бұрын
Yes, but for many years Belgium has had a class of low speed mopeds (brommerfiets) so it was easy for them to fit EAPCs into their existing legal framework as brommerfiets.
@maciejpsyk
@maciejpsyk Ай бұрын
@@nickwinn7812 Not exactly, because bromfiets correspond to L1e-B class, same as everywhere else for decades. It was in 2013 that the EU law 168/2013 had created L1e-A and L1e-B classes. And Belgium was smart enough to merge L1e-A with ebikes (EAPCs exemped from the law) for practical purposes (no mandatory insurance and helmet, no licence plate and free to ride wherever ebikes can go). It's not to say that this is an ideal situation by itself - merely more managable. The goal is to exclude L1e-A class from the type-approval regime, not having the bikes homologated under that regime... so they can be excluded.

This is exactly the sort of ebike I've been looking for. Since I was 27 (35 years ago), I've had a left leg full of metal and as I've got older, its got harder to bend my knee far enough to pedal. And about 6 years ago I sold my last road bike, as it was impractical for me to pedal any more. We badly need a change in the law to allow those of us with disability to be able to use throttle ebikes. Personally I'd like a cargo bike like the Urban Arrow, but with just a throttle. I also think the 18mph limit for assist is set too low to be safe. It needs to be at least 30mph to keep up with urban traffic. I regularly managed average speeds over 30, when I was fit. And a lot faster than that when downhill gradients and fearless youth were involved! So 30mph seems perfectly reasonable to me. If that means insurance etc then I'm fine with that too. Even a safety test like that for the likes of the Citroen Ami in France for 14 year olds.

The illegal high powered bicycles are very often used by criminals, because they cannot be tracked and are very cheap. In general the police looks for dangerous/reckless driving, before they stop you when using electric bicycle. As far as legislation goes, updating the legislation to allow people to use high powered bicycles as a means of transportation will probably never happen, because of the legislators and their understanding. Using 750-1000 Watt motor in throttle only mode costs 25 pence per 20-24 miles, which is roughly 1£ per 100 miles. Considering the UK has some of the most expensive electricity on the planet it's still cheaper than having any other mode of transport. it can be parked easily, doesn't cost much to maintain, takes very little space and as long as you drive it safely it will cause much less damage in an accident. Yes high powered bicycles can be really dangerous and are often used by criminals, but the criminals use night venues and bars as well to do illicit business. You don't see any restrictions on people using these venues, but there are restrictions on using high powered bicycles. Yes we own the bicycles, but there are hundreds of stolen ones on the streets as well, so ownership cannot be regulated easily and recovery of stolen ones is almost impossible. Putting limits on everyone however and refusing to make them legal is also not a solution and is doing a lot more harm. There are people that can benefit greatly from owning a high powered bicycle and they are much more environmental and budget friendly than cars or mopeds and even city transport.

Whisper ebikes have effectively done this for years. Pay an extra £100 and they get your new (Whisper) ebike certified, full throttle allowed (up to 15.5mph). On other bikes full throttles are allowed so long as they work through the pedal assist system. Instant power upto 6kmh then if you are turning the pedals full power to 15.4mph. Rad power on their 250w bikes use this system, but not now easily available. Woosh ebikes have produced some bikes like this also. Don't know why they are not much more common.

Having a disability with my leg so i need to apply for permission to add the throttle and must cut out at 3.6mph then i can pedel and kick the motor in at 4mph! The thing I really struggle getting an answer to is will it fit in an estate car? A van yes, but estate cars have smaller silly doors. This is where I get to use the word aperture in its traditional sense. I struggle to get even a normal bike through the aperture to gain access to my estate cars copious interior space. It's okay for a shopping bag but not a big stretchy bike. I need dimensions to get through the "access hole" (That's why someone invented the word aperture} because if you put this in your car at home and then take it to Private land, even council owned private land, somewhere you walk your dog type of private land, you could get a 1000 watt one and the police couldn't touch you as long as it goes back in your car to take it home and never sees the public road. So will it fit in an Audi A4? Or do I need to buy a van in order to buy a bike that is road illegal but legal to rag about in open countryside? At this rate I need to buy a van in order to get a powerful bike and also move to Scotland for the fun rough stuff free of coppers. And I'd probably get arrested for a hate crime somehow if I did that.
