I've been shooting photography most of my adult life. It started with an on sale Nikon D3200 that wasn't even interested in using, all the way through being a photography business owner, teacher, and KZfaq Photography Content Creator.
My favorite subjects are Human Portraits and Shallow Depth of Field with my specialty, or claim to fame if you will, being Dramatic Nude and Bodyscape. Over my many years of photography I've mastered many genres but I never stop learning and I don't want you to stop either. That's why I started my KZfaq Channel in the year 2020. After a hiatus from photography, I picked up my camera again just in time for the Covid Pandemic. The world shut down. With more time than ever and no humans to photograph I found myself bored but motivated. ZWade Photo, the KZfaq Channel, was born.
I have always been a Nikon brand photographer, but in my community on KZfaq there is limitless room for Canon, Sony, Fuji, Leica, Hasselblad, Nikon, AND any other brand, photographers. This lens suffers by being in the same line of lenses as some of the really ludicrous S lenses. You mention the 50/1.8S at a like, 5-600 dollar price point and yeah, well not only can the 24 not compete with that one neither can most other lenses on the market. The 20, 50 and 135 are simply "the best", if your definition of best is peak resolution at wide apertures (or stopped down). By comparison the 24, 35 and 85 are a bit disappointing. On the other hand, these lenses when compared to anything else are at least competitive. At the end of the day 24 is a cool focal length but one that's a bit lost in the modern landscape. 20/21 is more popular for landscape and architecture, and 28 more for general purpose wide angle. Or at least that's how it seems to me. The real dilemma I have is that while I love primes, this lens does not seriously outperform the 14-24/2.8. Or, frankly, outperform it at shared apertures at all. It's smaller, lighter and cheaper, true. But the 24mm f1.8S is not a small lens. The 26 and 28 are small lenses. Dunno, I am certain there are reasons to prefer the 24/1.8S but in practice since I tend to prefer wide angle lenses where things are in focus and often mounted to a tripod, I'd buy once cry once on the zoom which is a true gem in the Nikon range.

The 24 looks nice, but I have the 20 1.8 (which I love) and the 28 2.8 (great for walkaround) as well as the 24-120 and the 14-30 which cover my 24mm needs.

So far, as I rewatch this video, I have to make a side by side because while instantly see that the 20 is better, I’m pretty sure the 20 is WAY better. In every way. It’s cool though because I LOVE how the 24 is working for video making these talking head portions.

@@ZWadePhoto It'd be interesting to see, I always heard the old 20mm 1.8 G is microcontrast and 3d-pop out the wazoo. How does the Z 20mm 1.8 compare to that one?

Nikon is known for their good ‘red’ renditions. I agree with regards to the ‘greens.’ I notice that and it is annoying at times on my Z7. @09:15. This is what can make KZfaq a good and viable platform, by the sharing of information, and good discourse with fellow Photographers. It benefits us all. I see a good lens here. I would concur the 20 is better, and I think most would. Personally I would prefer the 20. This 24 seems to do well, and it should perform Ok for what You want it to do. I don't see the fringing here to be too much of a problem? I do see more ‘sample variation’ on some Nikkor Z lens quality and output, IMO. Enjoy your reviews on lenses and the accompanying images, which in this case, are pretty darned nice! Hope to see the comparison You mentioned, as it would make for good content, and be beneficial. The Nikon Z 24mm f/1.8 S lens is good and I have never experienced any issues with background focus while capturing subjects in the foreground or background.
