I SHOULD NEVER HAVE PAINTED THIS (or sold it)! Stripping paint from mid century teak

Look, we all start somewhere. This piece has haunted me for FOUR years. I was just starting out in the flipping for profit business when I did this piece. I bought it for $50 from Facebook marketplace from someone's rec room. I obviously knew it was mid century. But I should have done my research. Better research. I frikkin painted it white and while, sure, it was beautiful... I shouldn't have brought a brush anywhere near this piece.
I was in a financial bind when I sold it, even though I realllllly wanted to keep it. I told the new buyer if she EVER wanted to sell it, please let me know. Well, hold on to yer butts, she wrote me about 2 months ago and said they were renovating and she no longer had a place for it. I bought it immediately, for about 50 bucks less than I paid for it.
I know so much more than I did back then. This is a fairly rare sideboard by Sven Andersen. I am keeping this forever! But I need to try to get it back as close to original as I can. I need to strip off my own paint job.
I learned a few years back the importance of researching a piece prior to any modifications/refinishing. To be honest, it doesn't matter WHAT the piece is, if you want to change it badly enough, you're gonna do it. lol I'm making myself vulnerable here in the hopes that this story will make you just pause, and double check that you aren't doing something you might later regret! But at the end of the day...it IS only furniture. Don't beat yourself up (or a total stranger, over a piece of furniture you've never owned or WILL own). Just learn. I keep saying in these videos that when you know better, DO better!
Much love!

As a Dane with tremendous love for our Danish heritage manifested in mid century modern furniture, this really really warmed my heart to see. I own many pieces of classic Danish furniture including some Andersen ones all passed down from greatgrams to grams to my father and then to me when he passed. You definitely restored it back to its glory, and I think you should be so very proud. It's gorgeous. Lots of love ❤️ xx

The “before” piece was beautiful. The”after” is stunning and gorgeous! I enjoyed seeing it in its home in your dining area, too. I’m glad you shared your thoughts on that and I’m sorry you and others are getting grief about painting furniture. I love watching your channel for the content. I don’t think it’s about it being a “thing” it’s just a way to categorize a time period and style of furniture, and it was during the mid century. I’m sure people who were your age in the 1950s thought the same thing about the art deco style they grew up with in their homes.I’m 46 and because 80s furniture was quite awful with fake velvet wagon wheel furniture no one sees that type of furniture coming back in style because it wasn’t stylish even when it first came out.The mid century furniture was ahead of its time but at the time no one thought it was.

This was a really interesting and amazing era for furniture, many of the styles continue to have an impact on design today. The term mid-century modern was coined in 1984, so you should probably get used to the term! While I would never be mean to somebody painting mid-century modern furniture it does make me cringe! I think this furniture should be preserved as much as possible, I love her approach where she seems to only paint if it can't be restored.

Both versions are beautiful. It’s a shame people have made you feel like you need to justify your choices. You have a great eye for what will make a beautiful piece. To paint or not to paint is up to you. Others…well, they have their own choices to make…which reveal their characters quite clearly.

I am quite over 70 and in some of the best shape of my life. I have loved working with wood since I was in my 20's. Since then I have learned more skills than I can count, and lived in so many places I considered myself a gypsy for years. Now I am settled near Eugene Oregon, and bought a small mobile home which was in fine shape but not my style. I gutted it and started covering every surface with wood. The floors with shorts of oak flooring from a hundred year old house, the ceiling with thin cedar tongue and groove from a friend's pasture, and lastly the walls with cedar fencing that was removed from a home near me. Which brings me to my point. I ran across Mathew Peech on KZfaq. He was talking about making all kinds of small things with cedar fence pickets that sell. I have lots of small tools and so I thought that sounded like fun. Watching his channel and finding an old crappy coffee table alongside the road led me to finding a woman who calls herself "the furniture flipping teacher". What I liked about her is that she is thorough and mostly meticulous, in my opinion, but she strips and paints everything. Then I found you...I love that you restore things to their original wood finish whenever possible. Most refinishers just look for things to paint and I see how that saves time but it doesn't appeal to me who loves the look and feel of wood...You don't take shortcuts, you are honest about your mistakes, and you like to save anything that is made of good wood as in the video following the hurricane. I found your channel on July 1 and have been exclusively watching you ever since. I can see that I have sooooo much to learn about different woods, finishes and tools. Not sure there is enough time left in my life to reach the skill level you have attained but my goal is to see how close I can get, plus they say it helps keep your brain sharp when you learn stuff you didn't already know. Thank you for sharing in such a clear way. I think you spend the perfect amount of time showing actual footage and speeding up some parts that could become boring. I do have one request, at the end when you do the reveal, because of my age, I have a hard time remembering what something looked like from the before shots to the new look video. In this one you showed one and then the other consecutively at about 23 minutes in which I really appreciated. Also I like that you ended it with the new look rather than the original shape it was in. Thanks for your commitment to loving what you do, doing what you love and sharing it all with us.

You did such a painstaking and beautiful job of restoring this, and it looks stunning (both in its own right, and in your gorgeous home!). I'm so glad you got the chance to do this - we all live and learn, so, as other people have said, never regret an old mistake, because it helped you gain wisdom for the future. Your original makeover was obviously done with both care and good taste, and in the best faith. The piece brought someone happiness, returned to you, and you've breathed new life into it and it all adds to its richness and history, and just makes it more special. Also, the two tone drawer fronts are a beautiful touch, I'm glad you kept them as they are. Still, I can only imagine the feeling when you realised after you had painted and sold it that those sideboards are worth thousands of dollars!! It made me wince in sympathy! You've given brilliant advice for aspiring furniture flippers out there, research is so important - thank you for sharing this. :)

I am always reminded of a quote in these instances, one that I will paraphrase here….”we were so caught up on whether or not we could, no one asked if whether or not we should.” I create and paint sideboards as a side business and people will offer me furniture to paint for them or to get rid of cabinets they don’t want saying, “you can paint it and sell it.” I always say that, Just because painting is a fun option, Not every piece of furniture deserves it. If painting helps the piece gain a new life…..great. But many times beautiful antiques need to be left alone and just appreciated as they are. Knowing when to paint and when not to is the trick. And Learning this lesson in our development as artists is our shared storyline… a common thread.

So glad I spotted this because I've been waiting for it. It was cool with the white paint but now with all that beautiful wood refreshed and the natural grain and color restored it is definitely a piece to be so proud of. A labor of love for sure. Now I feel guilty that I haven't nourished my many wood pieces. Your home is decorated spectacularly as well.

I have a circa 1910 dresser that was my grandmother’s. In the 60’s it was painted white. I put olive green with antique glaze over that in the early 70’s. I stripped it in the late 70’s and put a very dark stain on it. I wish I had used a much lighter stain.🙁

Don’t beat yourself up! You didn’t do anything wrong! You painted the piece to sell and make money you needed. For a while it brought joy to another family and served them well. Now it has come back to you and you get to un-paint it and make it what brings you joy. Neither decision is wrong. 🥰 It’s a beautiful piece. Great job!

Wonderful transformation as always! This piece is a now a timeless beauty. You brought up really great points in the video, the biggest takeaway for me is: research. Being older and a little wiser and taking the time to research pieces helps me appreciate furniture so much more than I did 15 years ago when I was totally taken with the chalk paint look. Thankfully I never painted anything of value. I wanted to at the time, because the Pottery Barn painted furniture look was popular and Annie Sloan was giving me those shabby chic vibes that I loved back then. I wanted to paint my inherited French provincial lowboy dresser so badly. Either due to my laziness or foresight, I left my quality furniture alone and the present day me, who appreciates beautiful furniture a lot more, is thanking my younger self for leaving those pieces original.

I just did a harmony house piece very similar to the one you put up a few weeks ago. I could not think of what to do with it and then your video popped up. it is a very thin walnut veneer. The horizontal wood (2 X 4) under the top two drawers is a different wood type. But i was okay painting it because i considered what you said about these being mass produced. Also the veneer was so thin. i had to be so careful when stripping it. But it looks very similar in all ways to the one you did. So yes, i have painted mcm.

As an amateur refinisher, I don't see any obligation to fully restore a vintage or antique piece, indistinguishable from the original. Fact is, beautifully crafted, fully functional pieces have been used by families for decades - missing hardware, permanent marker, pet damage, toddler juice stain, even the evidence of pocket knife monograms can be expected. Once the family gives up the piece - it's fair work and environmentally friendlier for someone else to make fresh use of whatever value is still there. That being said, I choose to salvage as much beautifully grained wood as possible - because it is rarer now, and may become increasingly more so to future generations. Some will be aware of the loss, and be grateful for folks who have kept it as accessible as possible.
