EASY 1 coat paint technique - BUILDING A CUSTOM BASE - Vintage Dresser Makeover

This dark, heavy, boxy vintage dresser needed a BIG TIME makeover and she got one! This was my first time building a custom base for a piece with Kreg Jig for pocket holes (similar to what many other youtubers are doing). It was a little more of a struggle than I anticipated, though I expect it would be easier with a proper mitre saw or table saw.
Using Fusion Mineral paint as a glaze, I'm applying only one coat which allows the woodgrain to peek through the paint. I can't possibly be the only one to have discovered this ability with a select few of Fusion's colours, but I haven't seen anyone else do it, so I thought I would share my process with you.
This technique was actually discovered by accident a few months back when I did a similar dresser, and wanted to apply a custom mixed teal. Both Renfrew Blue and Coal Black by Fusion are slightly transparent so I put on the first coat, fully expecting to need two or three coats for full coverage. But to my surprise, I LOVED the look of the single coat- it was behaving like a glaze or semi-transparent coloured stain, and thus, a new technique was born!
This look won't appeal to everyone, but I think it's unique and beautiful and I can still see a bit of the woodgrain through the paint, so I love that part of it as well! Hope you enjoy!

Absolutely stunning! You've done oak sooooo right. The only quality I like about oak is that it's super solid, making for sturdy furniture. FYI, ALWAYS use a dust mask, and do any sanding you have to on oak outside or in a well ventilated area. This is especially so with red oak. I'm a cancer survivor (head cancer), and was a case study for Emory Winship Cancer Institute. Being a hardcore woodworker, as well as a Jill-of-all-trades (forget Jack), I lazily chose too many times to not take all precautions with toxins and dust. Studies show that the toxins in oak wood is very caustic, red oak more than white oak. Because of my age at the time of diagnosis, 44, I was the only female known to have such a rare and unique cancer, with traces of multiple myeloma. The tumor developed in one of my maxillary sinus cavities, showing that the culprit was inhaled. Please take care of yourself, cause the world needs your videos and works of art!

Hi Angela. I am interested in speaking with you about your diagnosis. I have a sinus injury. Been off work since May 2020. I worked at a call centre. Too much strong perfume scented laundry detergent smell burned my sinuses. I saw an allergist in February of 2020, and after testing he said I don't have any allergies. Then asked he asked me if I was involved in a chemical spill. I said, " no," he said, "are you sure". I said, "yes". It's didn't really sink in, (with me) what he was actually saying until months later. I have lots of headaches, slightest thing like even burnt toast. I was wearing a mask before everyone else was, charcoal filter, due to scent issue. I am very limited with going anywhere. Been on a waiting list to see specialist, since June of 2020. I take lots of natural supplements to help with healing, etc. I have researched the chemicals in laundry detergent, and the different sinuses in our head, and how it can cause pain in parts of our body. I would really appreciate any information that you may be able to provide. Thank you.

Thank you! Yeah, I could have drilled new holes and changed it, but I like the melding of the vintage look of the hardware and the more modern style base. It’s an interesting juxtaposition , at least to me. I know some folks will hate it. Haha but that’s true of pretty much anything :-)

So many things to be amazed by with this one, Angie. For starters, you took Renfrew Blue and turned it into a dark olivey green (huh?) Then that "wash- but more than a wash" technique with a 3 in 1- is just terrific! Lastly that base was exactly what it needed. As usual your instruction is clear and concise. You knocked this out of the ballpark, my girl!

You are a true artist and every video continues to show how truly talented your are. I am in my mid 50s and widow of 16 years and have been struggling with depression. I found myself on your channel and have been binge watching and find that I have some furniture I was goung to throw out and replace but I am now excited to try and save then, in a very armature way, but I have to start someplace. My husband was a woodworker and drilled safety of machinery and safety of usibg chemicals, no pun intended. Your channel, somehow was what I needed to find something I can do and get motivated about and get out of my funk. Thank you so much for posting your videos and educating along the way.

Hi Angie. Everything you've done with this dresser looks amazing. I too am not a big fan of oak, but with this technique, you really do need the wood grain. I love how the wood grain peaks through the paint. I just did a nine drawer dresser a couple weeks ago and made the same oak base. I'm in Ontario and it cost me a little over $110.00 with tax. With wood costing so much right now, it's a huge cost, but I think it's well worth it. My husband is from New Brunswick and we both love it down in the East coast. You're luck to live where you do. Always look so forward to your video's coming out. I feel you are one of the most talented furniture artist on You tube. Thanks for another great video. Have an awesome rest of your day. 🖌

I like that you added the base to the existing “base”. You never see that. The base is always completely removed but this just added to the contrast. I’m on the fence with the hardware but I’d still have it in my home!

What a beautiful color and transformation. Angie, you are becoming a true artist and craftsman and I love watching your videos. I have a solid oak hutch that my father built about 50 years ago and I've been thinking about painting it and this would be the perfect color.

Oh em gee! That is unexpectedly gorgeous!!! I don[t think I would have been so happy with it without the added bottom piece. It really made all the difference in the world. You know what? I never noticed the legs were a different oak/finish. You really have an eye for this work! And thank you for all your little tips! You're the best!

Wow, GORGEOUS! I've never seen this paint technique before. I have a really old oak dresser that this would be perfect on. Thanks for all your videos; you do such great work and it's a joy to watch you and learn!

This is great…I have an old, funky 70’s dresser..but it’s solid white pine, no veneers. You’ve inspired me to give some new life to the old girl. I bought it from the Salvation Army store 15 years ago…lol! It lived through 2 boys and now will get a facelift. 😎

Amazing! You deserve that table saw and all the tools you need. Your explanation was clear. I really like that the base matches the top. Also the cleaned hardware looks good and if you feel like swapping it out with something contemporary like leather straps, that would be cool too.

I really like that paint process and the finish look. I have 2 heavy oak grain pieces I am going to use it on. Thanks.

You never disappoint Angie. It’s absolutely gorgeous. I love how you kept the top wood and I love the base that you built. The color is also beautiful. Love your channel ❤️ PS… I’m so glad you kept the hardware. It’s beautiful.

I like how you explain how the tools work and why you want them. The DYI shows an TV hardly ever do that any more.

Out-freakin-standing. Really well done. I hated those furniture pieces in the 70s-80s but this is something entirely different.

I love this! I’ve never seen this before and I’m excited to try it. I have two pieces that would look great with this treatment. I love watching your videos. I just learn so much. The base looks great. I can see this in a dining room as a statement piece. Thank you for another inspiring video.🌸
