I am a footwear designer, shoemaker, and founder of Shoemaking Courses Online, where you can learn how to make shoes professionally from home.
It's undeniable that we're living in the era of sneakers. From classic styles to the latest releases, the market is flooded with thousands of designs from various brands. Sneakers have become a staple in our daily wardrobe, with each of us likely owning at least a few pairs.
Common Characteristics of Sneaker Design
When it comes to designing sneakers, there are certain characteristics that you'll find repeated across different styles.
I created a system for myself and my students to simplify the entire sneaker creation by dividing sneakers into groups based on their pattern construction, which is the design itself.
When you understand the system it will be much easier for you to create any sneakers.
There are 4 main sneaker groups based on construction. Let's break them down.
First, we have sneakers inspired by Oxford shoes, featuring both, low and high-top variations. These sneakers maintain the closed construction typical of Oxfords, with quarters sewn under or on top of the vamp.
Next are sneakers with a construction similar to Derby shoes. Unlike Oxfords, Derbys have an open construction, allowing the quarters to move freely. This design is reflected in both low-top and high-top sneakers.
Soft Elements in Sneaker Design
Soft elements are another common feature in sneaker design, often found in the top or tongue of the shoe. I personally love that these cushioned elements add both style and comfort to the footwear.
By mastering the design of these four types of sneakers and incorporating soft elements, you gain the freedom to create virtually any sneaker style you can imagine.
Designing Any Type of Sneaker
Now, let's talk about how you can design any type of sneaker using these principles. By understanding the construction and design elements of each sneaker type, you can mix and match them to create your unique styles. Whether it's high-top Derbys or low-top Oxfords, the possibilities are endless once you learn these fundamental concepts.
EVA Soles in Sneaker Making
Finally, let's discuss the role of EVA soles in sneaker-making. If you don't have access to traditional shoe soles, EVA foam is a lightweight, flexible alternative that's easy to work with.
With EVA foam, you can create custom soles for your sneakers in various colors and thicknesses, giving you even more creative freedom in your designs.
