I Sold My 4090 for a 7900 XTX - Here’s Why
I just sold my Nvidia RTX 4090 Founders edition graphics card and swapped to an AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, and not because it was cheaper. Personally I actually think the RX 7900 XTX is a better graphics card, at least for what I do. Why do I think the RX 7900 XTX is a better GPU than the RTX 4090… Let’s talk about it.

I have a 4090, but for exactly one reason. High-end PCVR. Whenever I see reviews of the 4090, I don't understand why people would buy one for ordinary flatscreen games since it is absurdly overkill for the majority of games and way overpriced if flatscreen is all you play. Quite frankly, my 2080Ti ran every single flatscreen game that I personally play adequately and I never would have upgraded for that. For VR its a very different story though, where the 4090 has been a total game changer for simulators especially and allows the vast majority of my game collection to now run at the solid 90 to 120 fps framerates that are so essential in VR, and finally has the VRAM to push 5760x2880 level resolutions with minimal hiccups. Yet bizarrely the vast majority of 4090 reviews don't even mention VR as a use case when to me that's the only use case that makes this card actually worth the price.

What VR applications are requiring so much power these days? I never really thought I was lacking power for VR with may 2080ti but I only have the original Oculus Rift and the resolution was just too low for me to enjoy games like Skyrim/Fallout 4. I remember trying to upscale everything on the GPU but the problem was more the lack of pixels in the actual device I don't know how much better they have gotten today. It was easy to drive (probably even on my 1080) but not high res and kind of had that "screen door effect" people talk about with VR.

@@Accuracy158 Well, lessee. Now keep in mind that Oculus Rift was only 1080x1200 per eye vs. 2880x2880 per eye on today's high-end headsets like Pimax Crystal which have pretty much no SDE at all, but is almost like pushing two 4K displays simulataneously. So MSFS for sure, where a 4090/13900k is still only going to get you about 60fps at decent settings (but very playable vs fps in the low 20s on a 2080Ti). Then there's DCS, XPlane, Assetto Corsa, heavily modded Skyrim with 4K textures, Elite Dangerous, Derail Valley, No Man's Sky, Solus Project, Subnautica, etc, which all become buttery smooth by comparison with the 4090. And it provides the ability to make nearly all the more "casual" titles run at 120Hz. But for flatscreen, even MSFS was pretty decent on my 2080Ti.
@daviddahlstrom192
@daviddahlstrom192 10 ай бұрын
@@thelmaviaduct Playing DCS at great framerates, even in flatscreen, is certainly a valid use case, but without the future-proofing for VR plan that you mention, I'm pretty sure you could have gotten away just fine with a 7900XTX or 4080 still making the 4090 overkill for the price.

@@daviddahlstrom192 2880x2880sounds more like where VR has to be. As someone who put VR down after the first week or two and never picked it back up I would have thought Valve's headset had the highest specs and they still don't look promising. Of course if I'm willing to buy a 4090 at launch and still would never consider spending more than $400 on a VR headset it suggests the market is pretty small. Not that 4090 would have been my first choice if the 4080 made more sense. It just seems like you are getting more for your money with the top of the line card in this case than one step down. Maybe because they knew the 4080 would be more applicable to the average customer...

NVIDIA lost this customer to the 7900 xtx because of the display port version. So I am supposed to be locked into DP 1.4 after paying $2,000 for a 4090? I don't think so. Also, I only play one game, DOTA2, which I am hitting 400 FPS at 4k, which is overkill for any monitor tech available right now and overkill for next gen monitors as well. But with a 4090, I could not leverage next gen monitors because of the awful port selection. Tell me that they did not do that on purpose to make their card obsolete at a quicker rate and I will laugh at you. NVIDIA says that they are more so a software company, right? It shows in this example quite clearly.

@@Jack_Sparrow131 I’m not going to dispute or argue about it. I’m just gonna say I have 2 cards myself in 2 different PCs. A 3090 Strix and a 4090 Gigabyte. The 4090 is 60% to 2X faster in different games. I’ve never owned an AMD card. But every reviewer will tell you that AMDs FSR and Ray Tracing doesn’t compare to A Nvidia Cards DLSS and Ray Tracing Technology. The Price is high for Nvidia Cards but it’s like they say. You get what you pay for. Theirs always the guys sitting on the fence that try to justify a cheaper card. The only reason to go AMD is the price, nothing else about the Card is better than a Nvidia Card. As far as latency goes with DLSS, that’s debatable because I haven’t heard reviewers complaining at all about that, and personally I don’t see that on my PCs either. My experience when using DLSS is all positive, I don’t have anything negative to say about or I would tell you. If it sucked I would definitely say so. The only downside to Nvidia Cards in my opinion is their prices. I paid a lot of money for both of my cards. Actually paid more for the 3090 Strix because I bought it during the Covid pandemic and cards were very hard to get. Paid $2,350 for the white OC Edition. My 4090 Gigabyte only cost me $1,800 after Cards became more plentiful. I think both should have only cost me $1,200 at most.

@papasmurf5598 well.. to be fair, I tried 2 Nvidia cards.. and 3 AMD cards The experience is the same I have (both of AMD / Nvidia) didn't encounter any major bug or bad experience Now.. the DLSS being better is correct but that only for DLSS 3 vs old FSR 1 / 2 DLSS 2 is nearly same $hit as FSR 2.. compare them side by side and even experts will face hard time knowing which is DLSS & which is FSR RT in the other hand is a clear winner for Nvidia, but even that mighty 4090 will take 40% fps hit in high RT games.. which I say is a lose.. RT will be a thing probably in RTX 5000 Series And yes.. you can't expect $1000 to match $1600.. but when a $1000 card (already discounted to $850) can match 90% of $1600.. that what make it extremely valuable.. It's like choosing to buy BMW for 80k.. or getting a Volvo for 50k.. they both German V6 engine full of features.. but the BMW is a bad value considering the 1.8x difference with slightly better features

I've experienced similar behavior with my 4090 on HDMI 2.1 displays. It'll be fine for a day, or two days, sometimes all week, but eventually it just drops the video signal and I have to restart to get it back. It has done this with both a Samsung QN800B and a TCLR648. None of my other three PC's (one with a 2080 ti, one with a 3080 nor my laptop) have this issue with those same TV's, so I'm fairly certain it's something specific to the 4090 on the software side. It doesn't do this with HDMI 2.0 inputs, only HDMI 2.1. I have seen other people on various forums that have the same issue. It's not enough to make me want to trade it for anything else, but I can see how that'd be annoying af if you review TV's and monitors for a living. Edit: You can still create custom resolutions with a 4090 on a DSC display, but you have to do it through the registry. Mildly irritating to have to do it this way, but it works. Would be nice if Nvidia would just properly fix this issue.

The 4090 is supposedly supposed to be 50%-60% faster as well but when the gap is a 330 fps vs 500 fps on mainstream 75-144 hz monitors, you might literally be never able to see outside of running 2048x2048 imgs on stable diffusion, it might be a little redundant. Definitely both probably overkill though. Anything below 60 fps is kinda sluggish but usable without stuttering (outside of fps). Anything over 100 fps you start to hit real diminishing returns outside of fps. Higher fps will always make getting headshots easier akin to following a fly under a strobelight where it moves 5 inches on every flash when you have a thumbtack sized headshot box. But for enjoying nature, 60 fps seems enough but it never hurts to have more if budget is no concern.

I don't understand why you couldn't just run the XTX stock and show a more reasonable and realistic comparison. This is absolutely maxed out, souped up, binned XTX consuming how many watts again (600?) versus a stock founders 4090. If you get a 2x8 pin variant of the 7900XTX you're going to get much less performance than if you get something like an ASRock Taichi and then there's yet another level and that's going watercooled on a binned card (aqua) like you did. I can guarantee you that at least a few people would run out and buy a reference 7900XTX because of this video and when they go home they'd see up to 20% reduced performance.

I went AMD for the first time recently with an XFX Merc310 7900 XT and I couldn't be happier really. I have a really solid overclock too that nets ~12.7% performance increase in 3DMark Speed Way. I mostly play Overwatch, or other multi-player titles, and could generally care less about ray-tracing performance. The only thing I truly miss is Nvidia Reflex, but Reflex is not worth the Nvidia premium, as it would be better to spend that money on the extra X. The way I see it, by the time ray-tracing becomes the standard, which I'm sure it will in time, AMD will have stepped up their game in that department anyways. That time is not now, however, as most games and gamers still approach ray-tracing as a novelty. That said, these 7900's are no slouch when it comes to ray-tracing either, and it is more than an enjoyable experience in the latest AAA titles. In all, this is a weird generation where, outside of niche circumstances, Nvidia doesn't really make sense unless it's an RTX 4090 and you simply want the best that money can buy today, or perhaps you value the high efficiency of Ada Lovelace and are working with a lower wattage restriction. It can make more sense to go with Ada Lovelace to maximize your PSU's wattage rather than upgrade the PSU and hurt the pocketbook, I suppose. Of course there is CUDA as well.

@@SkillerWolfCFM I could be wrong, but I think VRAM clock being locked is by design. I think it's possible that the RX 7900 series being multi-chip modules versus monolithic die designs results in much higher idle power usage. It is possible that this can be improved over time, as they have in the latest driver update for some multi-monitor configurations, but it is probably a quirk/characteristic of the RX 7900 series as it stands. All of the so-called fixes seem to just reduce the collective monitor load on the graphics card, which really isn't a fix, but a workaround at best. As far as "nobody giving amd a try", that's certainly valid. for gaming specifically, AMD does have a great product on the top end. the 7900xtx and 4080, from what I understand are pretty much neck in neck. if you can push it a little more, it could be in range of a 4090 in some workloads. but moving to amd you lose cuda (if you do any video editing with premiere, cg with blender, compositing with aftereffects, or want to do any kind of deep learning workloads (stable diffusion, wifu 2x, etc.), you lose dlss (which is way better than fsr), you lose out on physx, hairworks, rtx broadcast (which I use in obs for ai keying and background noise removal), and I think nvidia also edges out on ray tracing performance. I would *love* to see AMD compete at the top end, and I love that they keep trying, but until they get an efficient cuda compatibility layer, improve their ai up-scaling, and continues to upgrade their ray tracing game.

The GPU is AWSOME for performance and raw power. Impressive generational performance jump considering Radeon 60XX series. However, the power consumption is OBSENE! Idle power draining almost 200W with High Refresh Rate monitors is no SENSE. COIL WHINE is REAL in absolutely all models, and in my case, it's almost impossible concentrate in gaming during ultra loud coil whine noise. In recent vídeo @optimumtech highlighted this issue and, for what we know, there is no fix yet due the Chiplet architecture. I feel like the monitor really needs to support freesync and have it on to have reasonable power usage. I use a dp 1.4 to hdmi 2.1 adapter and it works fine. the only thing I CAN'T do with the adapter is adaptive sync (so no gsync on that display), everything else works great at 4k 120hz including 10 bit 4:4:4 with hdr. I'm not aware of any displays that actually use dp 2.1 yet. I'm not sure what you mean about "can't downsample from a higher resolution" - I can lower the resolution just fine, i haven't looked but I know i can do 1080p, I think i can even go lower than that if i wanted) and i'm not sure about the custom resolution thing as I've never needed to. What is the purpose of creating custom resolutions? why would you not just use the full resolution of a display as advertised by EDID? I don't get it.

I did not want to support Nvidia this time around either and I picked up an XFX Reference Design 7900 XT at the start of the year. Unfortunately after a few months of diagnosing and switching cases, improving case cooling, trying vertically mounting, basically thinking that I was the problem the whole time, I finally realized this particular GPU had a massive issue where the difference between hotspot and normal GPU temp (Delta) would be 30 - 35 degrees celsius, where it's only supposed to be 15 - 20 degrees celsius. I saw the hotspot temp go up to about 106c whilst playing cyberpunk for instance, and the sidepanel of my case felt the same as when you put your hand against a running kettle. It behaved as though someone in the factory forgot to apply thermal paste to it whilst assembling it or something. Finally I sent the 7900 XT back to the retailer for testing, they determined it has the same issues that I saw and I got back what I paid for it in credit, paid in more and just got a 4080. Now I couldn't be happier. I didn't want to support Nvidia but after months of struggling with the 7900 XT, and not enjoying it because I kept stressing about temps whilst gaming, I couldn't convince myself to replace it with another 7900 XT or even go for the XTX, I just wouldn't have felt excited about it after that experience. So at the end of the day, going Nvidia just made sense for me in that moment, especially considering how efficient Ada Lovelace is in terms of power usage. Nvidia may be be run by terrible people, but boy do they make good graphics cards. Compared to the issues I had with the 7900 XT (which included things like games randomly crashing etc.), it does feel like on Nvidia's side, everything just works.

I even told this to the retailer when I sent the card back and instructed them to up the power limit to +15% when testing to see it happen and they agreed with me. If I want to go any lower, I literally have to cap, power limit or underclock. 20K is what I sit at with a slight undervolt, +1400 on the memory and a ~420W power limit. My card is nothing special from what I can gather. It just barely reaches 3GHz if brute forced to the limit, but will happily do +1700 on the memory, so that makes up for it. Currently, Nivida has the best VR and graphics encoders on the market which pair with and run VR applications stable. The 7900XTX on the other hand has quite a few issues with its encoders and subsequently deals with quite a lot of stutters and framedrops within VR. Try out if Stable Diffusion(Windows Version) works and how hard the FPS impact is when using ENB for Skyrim/Fallout. I just can't find info on those from reliable People.

You had nvidia to tv problems too?!?! I thought I was the only one. EVERY 30 series gpu screws with my sony x900h tv. Audio cuts out multiple times every day. Driver installs are hit and miss - might glitch out and show some cached image from previous.

If I was to buy a top tier gpu, then xtx for the win. But replacing 4080 or 4090 for not really faster card? This is some crazy decision making. Looking forward to 8000 ryzen and radeon to upgrade my current setup, this gen is not that much better to be worth upgrading to

I can confirm the display issues with nvidia. Some displays just cause my entire system to freeze and crash via displayport. Doesn't happen on older nvidia cards.

I went with the 7900 xtx because Nvidia is such a scuzzy company. I haven't tuned anything yet but Horizon Zero Dawn is running at 250-290 fps.

I bought a XTX because it was at least 700 (!) euro cheaper than a 4090. It runs quite nicely. I know DLSS is supposed to be better than FSR, and I'm sure it is, but honestly, FSR2 is fine, and with this card on a 1440p ultrawide I don't need it at all, even with ray tracing.

The XTX is a great option for an enthusiast level buyer that's tired of paying the nvidia tax. With the price inching closer to 800 dollars, it's kind of a no brainer. RT to me is still very overrated for the performance cost, especially considering even the 4090 is still having to use upscaling with the heaviest RT implementations.

i'll never go back to amd, i could have been a one off but i paired a cpu/gpu a few years ago and holy hell did it give me driver issues galore... never had an issue with intel/nvidia... I"LL GLADLY pay the premium for stability and piece of mind. Also, the fact you got to overclock the hell out of the xtx to even be in the ballpark of the 4090 is hilarious, i'll just overclock the 4090 to be that much ahead again... happy gaming chum! EDIT: His first 2 point are legitimate though, but casual every day normal user won't ever have those issues, 3rd issue is just personal preference to him, not really bashing him for it but in all honesty he could have been "gifted" the xtx to make a video against 4090 for all we know. /shrugs
