This is so realistic for so many people. I've been collecting for about five years and it has been fairly slow for me (42 scales, 10 nendos, 1 resin) and anything I really didn't end up liking very much after arrival or impulse buys, I sold off not long after (I think about 6). My collection is kind of all over the place from series but it is appealing and I do love it. I currently don't have any OC characters but one on PO (R-chan) from Momoko, who I adore her work and I love this design. It's easy to get caught up with what everyone else has or the popularity at the time, it's caused me to lose deposits of figures I thought I wanted. I will only make a deposit if I have to now, like the Prime 1 Studio Asta ex-bonus ver., that thing is amazing! I really consider if I actually love the character and design to get it now, without outside influence.

@@TheFigureFrontier I know Prime 1 Studio gets a lot of negative comments but I'm glad they have been diving into anime, I'm sure some character designs are harder to translate. I hope it does too! They have a few others I am waiting to see (Vanitas & Noe, Mahiru Shiina) so I hope they will look as amazing. I'm sure you would see a change in your collecting habits now that you've unloaded a lot, I wish you well!

Great video! And I agree, when you just get into this hobby it's easy to get over excited and buy everything (I know I fell into this trap initially). Was there any figures you got rid of that you now regret?

Thank you so much! It is such an easy trap to fall into. The only figures I regret selling are the Myethos Jataka of the Deer King and Pearl Pillar of the Buddhist shrine figures. I'm hoping to be able to find them again this year to add them back into my collection.

A bit late to the party here, but this is about where I'm at too. I've been collecting stuff for over a decade, but most of my stuff was gotten in the 2013-2017 stretch when you could pick up, say, a nice Figma for 2500-4000JPY on the aftermarket. Things were so HILARIOUSLY cheap that I was able to just pick up mountains of stuff for seemingly nothing. A month and a half ago I rearranged my collection and went through my storage room only to find out I had a large stock of figures that I couldn't even figure out why I had. Turned out they were just stuff I randomly threw into other orders to round them out. So now I'm trying to sell them. Having good luck with a lot of stuff, but the Nendoroids just don't sell no matter what I do even though some of them are actually quite popular or rare. And it's a shame since they're the things I want to get rid of the most lol.

Personally, I like to tune into people who really curate and trim their collections. The kawaii cutesy "aesthetic" figure collectors are my fave to watch. Female collectors of "cultured" but cute figures is another specific niche lol. They all stick to a category and it's fun to watch the enthusiasm they emanate. I noticed I can't stand most male figures as they're very shonen posed or just boring. (There are of course exceptions which I am hoping to buy TvT ) Compared to most collectors I move at a snail's pace but it's allowed me to ruminate & decide on what figures I really want.

I agree with the preordering figures from sites that make you pay upfront make you really decide right then and there if you do want it but this doesn't work for me. I actually prefer ordering from sites like AmiAmi that don't make me pay upfront because it reduces the feeling of buyers remorse. There are so many figures i THOUGHT I wanted when they went up for PO but by the time they're actually out, I don't really care about it anymore. So for AmiAmi, I actually PO everything under the sun that I want because this gives me TIME to think about if my feelings for the figure stayed the same by the time they release. Some months may show I have like 6 different POs but by the time they're out I only get like 2. So I really think it just depends on the person and what works for them.

The only negative point for "pay now/ receive later" is that if the store goes bankrupt, your money goes too. My only recommendation is order and "pay now" from different sites. Great video btw, thanks for sharing.

I like the way you narrated this video and topic, it was very relaxing listening to it.👍 I totally agree with your statement that it is important to detach oneself from figure content creators and their habits of collecting, as there is a certain pressure for a content creator to always get new stuff and especially a lot of stuff because otherwise noone watches your videos... Anyway, what I also learned after doing my own tips for figure collectors and also watching several videos of similar content as yours here, is that you can tell this over and over again, but in the end everyone has to go through this process on their own to really learn what they really want from their collection. 🤷‍♀ Its like everyone has to do this mistake to really learn what is important for them to collect or what they want to collect. Great video.

Collecting for us is luxury art auctions for the rich, we all struggle with the completionist arch… VERY IMPORTANT to go through it as imo, a TRUE collector doesn’t want one but all of that media or physical media to show as history to the world and the money coming second, that to me is a true collector. And the truth is many of us are not that type of collector, we are just looking to preserve our childhood so our kids and the younger generation can appreciate it and it’s art format and that’s fine too

I had a similar experience with collecting video games so I’m a lot more particular with what I buy. My wake up call was when I had to move and realized how little I actually cared about half my games. I’ve been more intentional with figures but I’ve made some impulse purchases I plan on selling to a store just to get a bit of money back but definitely space back.

The only thing I dont like about figure collecting is the pressure to PO because we dont know if they restock after PO closes so there always that missing out, there a word for it I cant remember rn what its called but... its annoying as its happened to me and I feel regret not PO ing when I had the chance. Now I just PO everything, make a list and slowly eliminate the less of a figure I first initially was excited for thought out year. It helps fgures dont get released until 6m or a year later.

I feel like every figure or any collector in genral goes through this. I am guilty of do this with more than one thing. I've always collected figures my figure scale was in 2012 (first figure 2008) but i never really got crazy with it until covid because I 100% was being influenced by the internet. Luckily I reconizged this pattern because i've done it with many hobbies; Lolita, BJD, pokemon plushies, pins and all kinds of other things. I think not only the influencer thing (both being influenced and then also wanting content) but also Japan is the king of making "exclusive never to be seen again " merch and so you feel the need to get it before you can't and you're not thinking of "do i really want this?". There will always be something new and popular it's really important to think about what you truly want and for any hobby it's really important to put parameters on it if you haven't quite figured it out yet.

this is probably a stupid question, but how did you go about selling your figures? there's a few i've been thinking of selling from my own collection, but i've only ever gotten brand new figures at anime conventions. i don't really know of anywhere that buys used figures and i don't want to just goodwill them like i do old clothing.
@TheFigureFrontier
@TheFigureFrontier 3 ай бұрын
That is not a stupid question at all and is something that I had a tough time figuring out when I started the process. There are three main places that I would recommend selling figures on. The first would be Facebook Marketplace, as it allows for local pickup and you won't need to worry about shipping. The site I primarily use is myfigurecollection.net. Whether you're selling or collecting, it is a great resource to help you catalogue your collection and keep track of your spending. The site will allow you to post ads for your figures. You will want to sell the figures through Paypalk Goods and Services, which will allow you to create shipping labels at a discounted rate and ensures that both you and the buyer are protected throughout the selling and shipping process. I might make a full video going more into detail about this if that would be helpful!
