I Spent 2000 HOURS On My GD Level... Here's Why

What if you spent over 2,000 hours making ONE Geometry Dash level? Well with my most recent level Anarchy Road, I’ve spent the last year doing just that, and I learned lots of valuable things along the way. Here’s the story of how I made my best level to date.

For a beginner thats pretty good! But maybe you should make a 3d level with raytracing next time. No, seriously, this is SO INCREDIBLE COOL! But tbh i cant really see a big difference between the level at 1000 and 2200 houres of work. Instead of spending these extra 1200 houres to add extra details, i would just work on a new project. But still, one of the best gd levels ive ever seen.

Hate to be the nerd over here, but it's raycasting, not raytracing. Raytracing is solely responsible for generating realistic lighting, meanwhile raycasting is what turns 2D into simplistic 3D imagery.

I learned a lot from this. I'm a creative person who loves to start new projects, whether it be websites, music, drawings or other things. But in the end I ditch a lot of them because I just don’t plan them well and never really set goals for them. Your approach and execution of starting and finishing a project is just remarkable and I will absolutely implement your methods for myself. Thank you! Also, this level looks astonishing and I love the way you edited this video, great work! ;)

*Komatic,* I’m a perfectionist who’s been making levels for about 3 years. I’ve been trying to get past this barrier of “I know this detail is small but is it worth the time to change?”, and that, along with planning how everything moves and rotates, definitely boosts my editor time into the hundreds. People usually only watch a showcase of your level once, no matter how much detail is put in there. With that in mind, I’ve been going for realism in levels with more still images. It’s mainly because the timing of movements and rotations are especially difficult to make “perfect”, and sometimes no one’s gonna notice those movements in the background if there’s just… so much going on in the foreground. My recommendations for your level making going forward: I think creating a level that people will remember and not be overwhelmed with, having a simple main idea that’s prevalent, and mainly relying on decoration objects to make something feel “alive”, definitely makes its impact feel gratifying. I treat levels as learning curves and experiments, I never really plan to make “The Level” of my gd history (because that pesky perfection gets in the way). You did an incredible job with Anarchy Road and everything in this level is perfect. Just in the future, I recommend you make levels with the mental aspect in mind, and keep it over the logical and technical aspects of it all. TylevGD (Sorry about this comment being so long, I didn’t have time to shorten it.)

24 hours times 90 days is 2160 hours

If you worked 16 hours per day and didn't miss any days that would give you 112 hours a week. That would lead to 18 weeks of 112 hour weeks for 2000 hours

I didnt even know it was possible to stay motivated for that long on a Geometry dash level and i NEED to know how you can stay motivated and full of ideas. However the problem im experiencing is not that i dont get ideas or motivation. The problem is planning. I make plans for each section but i just cant stick with the planning and end up with mediocre generic deco with a copied style. (Help me)

The trade-off concept really does apply to me well. I’m currently making a poolrooms (Backrooms level 37) themed platformer level, and put tons of detail into it but completely fucked optimisation.

This is something tbat ive been doing with my current work in progress level MUTANT im planning out what i want the next parts of the level to be like before i work on them, although given that the level is 4:50 long, I'm taking my time and doing it one part at a time I plan out the first part then make it, then i plan tbe second part and make it, and so on Thats what i find easiest at the moment, focus on the level one psrt at a tine, dont focus on the entire level or you will overwhelm yourself Also i do the same thing with writing down trigger numbers so I dont forget lol, especially if you are reusing alot of groups, lets say a boss fight that has groups for specific boss controls

When in the playtesting phase I just removed all of the start positions. Besides that, I strictly playtested in the editor or played from the start of the level for stuff.

Thats how projects normally work. 20% of the time is spent on 80% of the project while the other 80% of the time is spent on the last 20% of details

I got the hour count from GD Colon’s save file explorer and the BetterInfo mod; either way though, thank you ^^
