Still can't believe my mom suggested me to go to conversion therapy when I first came out to her. This week, 6 years later, I found a note in her phone where she had wrote a message for a conversion therapist. In that message she's wrote that I "hate men" and my "problem" from 6 years ago still didn't seem to be fixed. Also had mentioned that she hated when I hugged her cuz she felt uncomfortable knowing I'm not straight... This is the reaction of my mom who's much more open minded than my dad and relatives. If they found out they'd probably just murder me. I've been crying the whole week. I thought my mom loved and supported me, but this is no love. Ca't wait to move to a new country and never return to this toxic, dangerous environment ever again.

This is why I will always find it ridiculous when people try to get "straight pride" or say that viewed as being gay is no longer any different from being straight. Straight people have never been forced to have therapy for being straight, or been kicked out of their home for being straight, or are murdered in the streets for being straight. They don't need to worry about their rights being taken away at the whim of a politician. Being straight isn't a bad thing, but it's not something that requires you to fight, sometimes constantly, for in order to live.

You know what sucks is having parents who pretend to care about gay people and even have gay friends but when it comes to you their child they suddenly are complete hypocrites and do not support it. My mother has gay friends but I wasn't allowed to have gay friends because she was scared they would "corrupt" me and make me gay because that's how that works. Maybe her own lesbian friends where making her question her sexuality and she was projecting that on me but I always hated how she was so outspoken about the gay community but then turned around and told me to watch out for them.

Somehow my mother is the complete opposite. She's a Jehova's witness, so is under the impression that everyone will be judged by him in the end. She says she can accept me and my sister being gay because we're her children and she can put in a good word for us but we'll still be judged, but she doesn't approve of any other people in the LGBT+ community. Honestly I feel lucky though because normally the families of Jehova witnesses who have gay people MUST cut them out of their lives completely or risk being shunned and outcast from their group.

The therapist thing happened to me. When I came out to my parents said they "supported me", but then very suddenly sent me to a therapist that was very, let's say, off. She did not let me talk about ANYTHING besides my sexual orientation and how I might be 'making the wrong decision' (as if it was a choice). Her office was in her house, and didn't look much like an office. After a few appointments, my friend and I got weirded out, and looked up the "therapist" my parents had sent me to. No results on any actual doctors, but there WAS an ad for a local conversion therapist under the "Doctors" name. It's 4 years later and I'm 19 now, but I don't think I'll ever forgive them for that. They literally sent me to a random person's house who wasn't even liscened. What.

My mom became somewhat of a religious zealot towards the end of her life. She died when I was 19. So she would hug my brother and I and say "thank God My babies are not gay". She also didn't want same sex marriage to be legalized and this was back around 2011-2013. She would tell me that "homosexuals" were going to go to hell. I would disagree with her, I believed even back then that if people were not hurting anyone then let them live their own lives. She wouldn't agree with me so I just kinda let her believe what she wanted. I loved my mom and I would rather have had her religiously obsessed than an aggressive and neglectful drunk but sometimes I wonder if she stuck around longer maybe she could have grown and changed instead of being so hateful I guess...

I think the whole "we don't claim them" or "they aren't REAL Christians" mentally is kinda toxic. By refusing to acknowledge them as part of the Christian community and their influence in that community does damage. It's like men saying "We don't claim the men who rape as one of us - not all men" like no, you need to acknowledge they are a part of your population and work to fix that. This is a problem in YOUR community and by not "claiming" them you aren't claiming the problems that they directly cause from those spaces. You're separating it as if it's not your problem. Just my personal opinion.

IDK. I personally call them "not real christians" because they are hypocrites and, while they themselves call themselves christians, one of our fundamental beliefs is to love one another. How can you love one another and use your religion to spew hatred and bigotry at the same time? It is, as I said, hypocrisy. That said, the fact that they are not real Christians--or not the Christians they should be, at least--doesn't make them not our problem. Like it or not, they still co-op our beliefs for hatred and twist what is ultimately a history text and reliquary of myth and ancient law into a perverse set of beliefs that just further their own agenda, whatever it may be. With their delusion that God (if he cares) is on their sides, they essentially become real life versions of the Knights Templar TV trope--people who are so self-righteous and full of certainty that THEY are good and that THEY are chosen that they are effectively immune to any evidence to the contrary, and so make themselves into despicable human beings without having the mental capacity to even comprehend how horrible they are. They're delusional, that's what it is, and their delusions harm others. It is the duty of Christians to denounce them because we spawned them and have been since the Dark Ages (Inquisition, anyone?), but it's not just a Christian problem, but the problem of anyone decent-minded who is of the opinion that, if someone is happy and isn't actively harming anyone, that we should support them or otherwise just let them be. If everyone treated others like persons in their own right, if everyone went through the effort of giving others the benefit of the doubt, of recognizing the beauty of our shared humanity... the world would be a better place, I think. But we live in a world where some people are moral absolutists and believe that they only know right from wrong, and they try to impose those views on others. We live in a world where many people see only black and white, sin or no sin, allies and foes, and fail to acknowledge gray areas in between, either because it's too uncomfortable or they are too lazy to even try thinking about anything for more than two seconds. It's maddening. And it's even more maddening when it comes from Bible-thumping, self-righteous religious nutcases that would represent your own religious group. Sorry about the (very formal) rant. It's late here and my brain tends to go... philosophical.

This is why it's important to also teach kids about the LGBTQ community as well. People keep talking about how we "shouldn't force stuff like that down kids throats", but what about all the kids that know they like boys/girls already as very young kids? They're going to think they should be ashamed of themselves and it's going to make other kids think there's something wrong with them. We should at the very least just let kids know that it's ok to like whoever, regardless of gender, and that gender identity isn't set in stone, and a big way of making sure get that is through media, clues like commercials and ads. Just one for he ways to make some kids feel more comfortable at least.

Thankfully i never experienced conversion therapy since i left that church, but i would not be here today if it wasn’t for having the strength to pull away from there and start loving myself. the part at 16:14 "the conversion therapy experience has stuck with me all these years. and I bet none of them remember me". this part is so true, especially with abusive relationships/experiences. the person who abused you will never remember it because they didn't care. it was a normal Tuesday for them. it reminds me of the phrase "the ax forgets but the tree remembers."

My gf went to conversion therapy (which is illegal where I live) but it was disguised as Christian counselling but they were tryna make her straight. Her mom forced her to go but she hated every minute of it and it reached the point where the lady decided to pray the entire time and my gf fell asleep under disguise of her praying. She doesn’t go there anymore after telling her mom she would kill herself if she was forced to go again. We are both much happier where we are at now.

As a Christian myself, I find this practice absolutely vile. Seeing other Christians use our religion to force heterosexuality onto people deeply upsets me. Whether or not you are Christian, I think that all of us here can agree that we are called to be kind to one another. Stay safe, friends.

i dont mind religion, but the moment you start to force people into your religion/make fun of others religions (like a lot of people do to islamic people, pagans, wiccans, satanists, etc.) or people with religious trauma is not okay. leave people alone, its not your job to make them 'holy' or whatever.

my family is heavily religious- everyone is Christian and i asked my mom if i were to come out as bisexual or lesbian she would “find help” for me. she would get someone to “talk me out of whatever was wrong” with me. i don’t plan on telling her until i’m 18 and gone since i’m scared of her reaction but i think about it a lot and it just separates me further from her now.

But really you can be gay and like guy things. I just interacted with women a lot more in High School because they were a lot more respectful. But it's like I still like sports and guy things. So yeah just like really they don't know what they're talking about because they're not gay and really base things off of stereotypes on what they think gay people are like. Admittedly gay people have kinda been ruined by the media in the sense of making the stereotypes. Not all gay men are feminine some like me are more androgynous. But yeah when they said that they just based on stereotypes of gay men.
