Conversion therapy is the practice of "curing" gay people by trying to turn them straight through counseling and lifestyle restrictions.
In this special report, VICE gets exclusive access to one of the hundreds of gay-conversion-therapy organizations, groups, and sessions in the United States. At the Journey into Manhood program, men pay more than $600 to attend a weekend retreat where they participate in exercises and activities the staff members claim will help them battle their same-sex orientation. The only qualification to become a staff member is to have successfully completed the program.
The report meets with the founder of reparative therapy, Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, who is illegally practicing on minors in the State of California, and investigates the controversial legal battle to fight conversion therapy for individuals under 18 years of age. We also travel to the annual Gay Christian Network Conference, speak with former "ex-gay" leaders including John Smid of Love in Action, who is now married to his gay partner, and hear the grueling stories of the individuals who have survived this brutal practice.

Actually people in gay relationships are less anxious, depressed, or unhappy than anyone else. Being in a gay relationship is the cure for being at the mercy of the perpetrators. We should ask ourselves why the divorce rate for gay men is so much lower than that of opposite sex marriage.

Honestly too many people get involved in other people's business. Don't like gay marriage - don't have one, don't like abortion - don't have one, don't like eating meat - don't eat it, don't like Christmas - don't celebrate it. But don't be telling other people what they can or can not do based on your own personal beliefs. If you're gonna be judgemental about other people you have better make damn sure you're perfect.
@gales9969
@gales9969 9 жыл бұрын
Meat eating is not a good example as the others cause no harm (An argument could be made for abortion pf course but...). Meat eating by definition is based on the killing of animals which ethical vegetarians/vegans oppose and are also inclined to fight against. I agree with the general point though. There is too much obsession with sticking your nose into the private lives of people and the choices they make.

Alpha NetRS This is how the american society should be, but instead there are always people who push their beliefs and ideas onto other people and try to justify their opinions with religion or what they perceive to be as moral or immoral. (though this is true for most of the planet) Personally I don't give two shits what other people think, or do with their lives. It's their life, they can live it themselves. As per religion, I'm agnostic but I feel that religion is a machination of tribalism and an inability to explain the unknown, and or to try to get others to live life as you see fit, rather than them living life their way they are pressured into following what is known as the 'norm'.
@Harizl

***** What if a teenager wants to cut themselves? The fact someone wants to do it and their parents agree doesn't mean we allow Licensed mental health practitioners to practice admittedly ineffectual quackery on minors. Shall we allow the teenage to drink too? We have limits on what minors can do for good reasons, and we have limits on what mental health practitioners can do for even greater ones.
@Harizl
@Harizl 9 жыл бұрын
***** If parents can convince their kids to eat poison because of their beliefs on the issue and their teenager agrees, do we let them? The answer is no. Because child endangerment laws exist for good reason, the fact America is often living in the stone age when judging these issues is rather unbecoming.

My dad tried to change his sexual orientation. He got married, had a child. He tried to convince himself and everyone else that he was a straight male. He fought it and fought it for 10 YEARS.. until left his ex wife for a man. Then he had to deal with the disappointment from everyone around him. His "closest friends" stopped talking to him. He was totally alone and was depressed and suicidal so he tried to fix the situation and got in a relationship with my mum-not to make him happy but for everyone else's happiness. He married her and they adopted me. But no matter what he did he felt he could never be his real self. He tried to fight it yet again but he couldn't. He couldn't change who he was born to be. He tried SO HARD! But in less than two years He left my mum for another man. My dad and his (male) partner have been together 8 years. They are now married and he's the happiest he's ever been in a long time. There's hope- hope is not always found in trying to change yourself to fit society's views. Some people may be successful not acting on there sexual orientation and may live a happy life but not everyone. Be who you want to be. Do whatever and whoever you want to do. You can be religious and gay. You can be gay and not religious. You're man enough just being you. Just do whatever makes you HAPPY and if you lose those around you then they weren't good people to have in your life anyway♡ at the end if the day it's you who has to live with yourself. So be yourself and just do you♡

@Sam66305
@Sam66305 6 жыл бұрын
I sense the struggle you must be going through from your post, but if it offers you any comfort, know that you are correct in your beliefs. Love for another person has nothing to do with sexual orientation. It has to do with truth to oneself, and the ability to connect in a deep and meaningful way with another human being. For many homosexuals, intense fear of rejection is the unfortunate byproduct of revealing who you are to the ones you care for the most, and who often have an alternate reality. One of the most difficult things in life, for heterosexuals and homosexuals alike, is the realization and acceptance that ones belief system deviates from that of our parents and friends. But, it is only through the process of arriving at those conclusions that you liberate yourself, and can become a fully independent person. Some people live fine under the delusion that they can "pretend" to be something that they are not, others just can't do it. Be clear, it's not you, but their distorted beliefs, that hurt them. When you can internalize that, you can be free of the guilt, shame, sadness, anger, or any other negative emotion you might be experiencing from this internal conflict. Seek support within the gay community if you haven't already. Hopefully, they have a strong presence in your area. I truly wish you all the best as you go through this difficult time. You certainly are not alone.

***** The first argument is null as it's predicated on people being unhappy with being gay. They are made to feel unhappy and sick due to the pressure and intolerance of many people in society. They are shamed into feeling guilty. To cure that we need to stop people telling them being gay is wrong. It isn't at all. The second part is about consent - most people draw the line with = Consent. Animals can't give it. Adult humans can. Relations between siblings are discouraged due to the potential genetic defects that can occur through inbreeding. That being said, if two or more adults consent to be in a relationship that's not my business to tell them no.

Is that what we say to people who want to reassign their gender? Just accept who they are or they will never be happy? What if you desire all the things heterosexual people do like having a wife, having kids, having a family life, but you can only get hard for cock because you were born that way? Just have to accept the fact that it is not for you? Fine but that doesn't translate into gender reassignment. Those are people who are born in a body that they don't feel comfortable with but yet we don't pressure them into staying what they are.

What's sad is that you are to ignorant to realize that they are actually stronger than the like of Bruce Jenner, because they decided to put an end to their suffering which is more admirable. I'm saying this because I can relate in a way and I bet you anything that they will eventually feel full of life. On the other hand, people who accept being gay, it's cool but I guarantee you that deep deep down there they feel emptiness inside. If you don't acknowledge that, then I'm sorry because you're just plain stupid.

Vipera01 making people feel like there's something wrong with them isn't the way to get any human being closer to Jesus. We get other people closer to Jesus by showing them God's love and letting them know that He loves them to no end, regardless of their sexuality. As long as they know & love God, they can always grow closer without needed to change. God loves the gays just as much as he loves you, my friend.

They can leave whenever they feel like and stop the conversion therapy at any time. You should support them through this every step of the way since this is what they want. Keep in mind that I am talking about the ones who ACTUALLY CAME OUT OF FREE WILL AND WANT TO BE STRAIGHT.

And she would call me every single day and try to convince me to go thru it. My abuser was already charged for what he did to me and I never saw my parents in the same light I used to. It's unfortunate because all of these men have one common problem: they're convinced that the way they are is simply not normal, that it isn't what society wants of them. It angers me deeply that people in 2015 believe that everyone should be the same. Where sexuality is caused by bad parenting, or bad teaching in schools. The fact that some people have found a "cure", for something totally natural is utterly ridiculous! Being a totally heterosexual man with many gay and bisexual friends, does not mean I'm going to change my sexuality. Why is religion and social pressure such a problem in 2015? Why should you feel the need to "diminish your sexuality?"

This was very enlightening. I really value this kind of reporting for the following reasons: 1) It approaches a compelling subject in a very civil way, 2) It highlights all sides of an argument in fair amounts of time, and 3) It does a good job of telling a story with critical fluctuations of interviews. Even though I do not support conversion therapy, I have much more respect for those who engage in non-violent methods because they personally want to. I do, however, wish there were more communication between those who participate in conversion therapy, and those who used to and later on do not support it. Thank you, Vice!

I'm gay and don't believe I chose my sexuality. I don't choose to be hated. I've had more than one girl grab at my crotch and another show me her breasts and it did nothing for me. I've had zero attraction towards women. Gender roles are also socially constructed, as are most things. I know many feminine straight males and I see myself as masculine even though I'm gay. When Lewis & Clark found the two-spirit indians, their immediate reaction was that they had a lot of work to do for them to enforce their Christians beliefs on them. Without even having to understand their culture, they were immediately deemed 'sodomites'. I wish people realized that homophobia is 100% hate that leads to pain, death and sometimes murder. I feel fortunate that I grew up in a liberal and Jewish household and not born to some uber Christian conservative family that obsesses over what they think they should hate more than their own spiritual beliefs.

I look at all of these men and women and all I see is tragedy. The fear, pain, isolation and confusion they have suffered, and the numerous ways in which they have either embraced their identity or who denounce their own attractions and pursue heterosexual relationships. I can't fault those men for having their weekend getaway, complete with props, costumes and dancing around a beanstalk with "magic seeds" around their necks. If this is the path they've chosen to bring them happiness, and personal fulfillment, so be it. But to force that rhetoric and project your own inadequacies onto unsuspecting youths and confused adults is shameful, and does more harm than good.

What a beautiful, heartbreaking documentary. This kind of top-notch reporting is what attracted me to Vice to begin with, and I'm glad they're going back to their roots with uploads like this one. I also love how this documentary managed to tell both sides of the story without being judgmental. Don't get me wrong, I'm 100% against conversion therapies and I think it's incredibly cruel and immoral for someone to try to change another person's sexuality, but this documentary shows that even the people participating in and running these therapies are just as damaged and troubled. I guess they found a way to cope with their identity crises and sexual abuses in these therapies (albeit in a very conceited, disturbing, and downright wrong way). Thank you Vice for this informative, beautiful video.

Having them act out the ridiculous scenes and dialog with shitty props while the leader talks about it in a completely deadpan, serious voice is the funniest thing I've seen from Vice content!
