I created #ThisPsychMajor. It was my response to a joke Presidential Candidate Jeb Bush made about psychology majors being destined for jobs at Chick-fil-A. This Psych Major was seen over 3 million times on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and KZfaq. But as the conversation started to unfold, I realized I made a mistake. The emotions that made This Psych Major viral also made it a problem. It has to do with the psychology of distancing.

A lot of #ThisPsychMajor posts elevated the field of psychology and diminished the worth of fast food employees. At best, I was clumsy. At worst, I was classist. In retrospect, I don’t know if I could have started this conversation in a way that lifted us all up but I wish I tried harder to do that. I’m sorry for messing up and I’m thankful you all kept me in check.

I really liked your #thispsychmajor video, but I made the same mistake as you and put down those working in fast food. Coming from a family that thinks psychology isn't a real science, Jeb Bush's comments did get me to think emotionally and put down working class individuals. I think it was great of you to acknowledge your mistake! Not a lot of youtubers do that. I'm super impressed with your content and I subbed. I'm hoping my channel gets as much traffic as yours some day :)

I didn't knew anything about the hashtag until i saw your Psychology Major playlist as i stumbled upon your channel searching for content on Psychology because i am now pursuing a degree in Psychology and I'm just happy to be a part of a community which so much diverse in respect to the fields of work and is filled with so humble people who not only come together to spread awareness and also accept and correct mistakes of themselves and of peers. THANKS!!

I'll admit, I had similar concerns with the first video when I watched it, but I saw this was next so I figured I'd see what you said before commenting, and I think you handled it really well. As a music major, I get the instinctive defensiveness of one's degree. Most people don't even think of music as something you have to study: It's just something that musicians somehow magically know how to do, so the idea that I'd dedicate years of my life to actually understanding how it works seems like a massive opening for fast food jokes. It even happened at the school itself: There was a guitar teacher who would often quip that "if you don't practice your scales then yes, I'd like fries with that." The problem, of course, is that knee-jerk defensiveness and nuance rarely go hand in hand. Recognizing that people who work menial jobs are still people and are vitally important to the function of modern society takes nuance and thought. Recognizing that the liberal arts are just as valid a choice of study does too. But responding to a wildly unfounded, uninformed attack on your group is a situation that isn't really conducive to nuance and thought, so those points get lost. It's an easy mistake to make, and I respect the hell out of you for owning up to it and using your error to educate. Kudos, man, I hope I have your grace and humility when I inevitably say something stupid that gets me in trouble.

+12tone I can't tell you how much I appreciate your comment! Honestly, this means a lot to me. I can say the same thing about KZfaq comments - they are often impulsive, emotional, and lack nuance. But your comment is thoughtful, rational, and speaks to the complicated way in which the internet works. I hope you don't have to run into this type of situation but if you do I'm confident you will handle it well.

12tone If it is of some confort, I honestly believe your videos do a great job at showing people what studying music is all about, and I've recommended it to a lot of people. I really appreciate the work you are doing and believe it is being eye-opening to a lot of people, demystifying the idea of the music major that only plays an instrument and that's it.

I saw your hashtag on twitter when you initiated it and I am really thankful I did. It is my dream to get a psych degree, but I am often taken aback by the circumstances of how psychology is presented. This caused me to hide this dream from my friends, telling me it's "not a real science like physics", "you can come counsel me then, will ya?" or the classic one:"Can you read my mind?". I questioned if I should really start studying psychology because the numerus clausus is so strict (my worry was -still is- , that I won't get accepted into university) and my friends telling me to get a more lucrative degree with a better chance of employment. But #ThisPsychMajor showed the different things you can do to help people, animals, corporations and whatnot. It really encouraged me to not give up on my dream to help people who are struggling. It is always a great ability, if a person can acknowledge a mistake and learn from it. I admire that! Keep up the great work you do with your videos.

+Sissi What helped me was to focus on my passions - the things I was most excited about. Once I discovered psychology, I quickly realized it was my passion. Success will always come when you are passionate about the work you do. Right now, focus more on doing the best you can on your studies and getting as many opportunities to learn as possible. Thank you for your wonderful comment - it encourages me to make more videos. Good luck!

#ThisNonPsychMajor respects #ThisPsychMajor's video, and response. I'm studying Environmental Science and climate change so I often get lumped into the same "Liberal Arts - oh would you like _______ with that?" mentality, or dismissed as going for the "easy" degree. There is nothing easy about the planet we live on, nothing easy about understanding the natural processes of the earth, and definitely, DEFINITELY there is nothing easy about psychology. #MadRespect #ScienceForTheWin

Excellent points, and good on you for listening to good counsel, acknowledging an error, and taking steps to correct it. It's a bit sad that your sensible mea culpa is a rarity these days, but perhaps that fact also arises from a cultural devaluing of human behavioral sciences (and from a cultural devaluing of liberal arts in general). Edit: By the way... I received a BA in Sociology and I've never once regretted it, though I'm sure I'm nobody's example of "material success". Truth told, I didn't attend college with the aim of "getting a good job". I attended college to learn more stuff. Does anyone attend college just to learn stuff anymore? Or is it all just "high school part II because that's what employers require" now?

+William Wright Thank you for your feedback! As a behavioral therapist, I have to practice what I preach otherwise I have no integrity. Once I realized I made a mistake I knew I had to do this. It just took me awhile to figure out how to say it. Good question about who goes to college to learn. I don't think it's framed like a learning opportunity in America anymore. Come to think of it, in many places I don't think primary education is framed as a learning opportunity either...

The Psych Show I think you're right. Have you done an episode on integrity? I mean, other than this one kind of is. It seems to me that integrity is greatly misunderstood and undervalued these days, although maintaining one's integrity is... well, integral to also maintaining one's social and mental wellness, I think.
