Could be aesthetics on the band saw table. It could be functional, in that the two woods expand and contract at different rates. I knew a guy who knew the different expansion rates of most woods. He made interlocking puzzles with different woods, so humidity wouldn't bind them up.

You need a team kaleb , nice work as always pal but i would think that working on ANY part of the kitchen, to get a proper cooking/eating area is more of a priority then making a table top for saw that isn't usable yet? .I truly get the fact you need to mix up the projects because its the mood you're into atm or the monotony.. but my instincts tell me if you're living there full time , a kitchen and bedroom and an organized, clean, setup living room would be next? I'm sure you addressed this before sorry, , just my thoughts😒

I'm always amazed that people feel the need to direct Kaleb in his work! I think it's pretty clear he knows what he's doing and how to pace himself and balance big projects with ones that look less impressive, but give him a little "break" by his doing something that's fun for him. He just finished the shower and is about to start intensive work again on the exterior. Maybe he just needed something less challenging and more entertaining for a week or so in between. Why can't we just sit back, support Kaleb in his decisions without second guessing, and enjoy the content?

*Howdy Kaleb & Kim 🙂 Great update video.... yep some machines need heaps of research & understanding of how they all work. 🙂 The different coloured wood used on flat timber on the bandsaw, I have thought about it. Could it be that as you are pushing the timber thru, and then having the lines on the flat timber also help the worker keep it straight.. even if the line is drawn on the timber to be cut... its a way of double checking that one is actually cutting it straight at the width required. 🙂 JOHN - how is your special home that were fixing up coming along... can you get Kaleb to do an update on that home too.. Thanks 🙂NZ*

I'd imagine one reason for the striped table was economy. A slab of either solid walnut or maple in that size would've been both hugely expensive and impractically wasteful, even when the saw was built, but it would've been far less expensive and easier to source, using off-cuts of solid wood from local lumber mills and other woodworkers. Add in what others have mentioned, that the alternated woods act as a form of reinforced plywood together, and that it was a chance for some aesthetic value in an era that prized aesthetics, and it makes a lot of sense why something so decorative to us would be a stock model from the catalog.

I can't help but notice that your attention is all over the place recently. Were that my house, I would be only concentrating on normal living quarters. Making the roof and dormers and eaves water tight. If that means adding the decorative elements later so be it. Then I would have worked on main floor rooms, which normally are kitchen, dining room, a living room or parlor and whatever else rooms there are. Upstairs I'd have done bedrooms. At one point you mentioned potential children and not only do you not want your master on a different floor from their rooms, (you were thinking top floor your master suite only at that point in time) but you do not not want them in a house that is still so under construction. Lead paint and small children do not mix. The basement I'd have left as basement until maybe later on. There is zero draw to live in that basement, ever. Cave living is not appealing. Yet you have mentioned buying appliances for a kitchen in that "always gonna be a basement", space. Why are you not working on a kitchen on the first floor, where people DO want to live? Last we saw you have a considerable amount of upstairs still missing ceilings leaving you exposed to bat and other critter droppings. The sudden collecting of Hall and Brown tools as well as other old ones is nice, but . At one point you mentioned a museum in the garage, you've mentioned an addition to the collapsing garage, you've more recently mentioned making a workshop in the basement, and you've started referring to the garage as the big workshop where you can recreate house parts. The focus on tools seems to have meant none of the rooms on the first, second or third floor are any further along. I'd want to see above ground rooms, becoming livable and lovely! The rest seems far far less urgent.
@dcan911
@dcan911 4 ай бұрын
I agree his focus seems a bit 'off', and I would be focusing more on the luving situation but you do have to do jobs you enjoy sometimes. The kitchen upstairs is going to be almost a museum piece, so he has talked about having a modern utilitarian kitchen in the basement too. There is value in creating a usable basement and garage workshop becayse that will make projects run smoother.
