Was given a ride in a Kitfox years ago. Engine died at about the same point as yours but we were up about 100' Pilot stalled it into a pond and we swam out of it. Airframe, prop and motor were totaled. When I got home, I signed up for flying lessons (I was sure I could do better than that experience). I soloed a week later. I say "Any landing you can swim away from is a good landing."

Do you mind me asking was it expensive for lessons? Living in Ireland I know there will be a difference in price. But I was hoping to get a general price of what it should cost. I wanted to fly since I was a child but just couldn't afford it. Now I'm nearly 40 it's now or never. I have great respect for you swimming away from a crash and then going getting a licence. The problem with vapor locks on Rotax engines, particularly with the constant carb heat system that it looks like you have, is a problem. In 2005 in my then new StingSport my son and I found our engine sputtering after taking off on a hot day from Chandler Airport (CHD) in AZ. Fortunately, we had enough altitude and partial power to land safely. The Rotax is a combination liquid and air-cooled engine. If you don't get enough fresh airflow over the engine you can have vapor lock. The fix for the Sting was adding a baffle under the engine, before the firewall and behind the radiator, to create negative air pressure to help draw more fresh air over the engine and through the radiator. By the way, when you finally started your takeoff run, post accident, it sure looked like you had a lot of "runway' behind you!

A note for *future reference*.. hehe... If you didn't do it off camera, always pull the plugs and crank first to blow out any potential oil in the cylinders on an engine that has been upset like that. In the event that crankcase oil leaks past the rings and into the combustion chamber while it's upside-down or sideways, you could potentially bend and/or break stuff from a hydro-lock condition... not applicable for 2-stroke types of course
@cgosgosney4869

@@cgosgosney4869 I think you completely missed what he was trying to say. When you have an engine that's really hot, and you turn it upside down, everything is so expanded (and the oil is thinner because it's hot), the oil will seep past the rings and into the combustion chamber. So you pull out the plugs and crank the engine to ensure that any excess oil gets thrown out of the cylinders to prevent a hydro-lock.

FYI the only way to vapor lock a liquid pump is to generate vapor before the pump, if the liquid pump picks up liquid it will pump it providing it mechanically functions any vapor after the pump will be pushed thru the carb vent and give an slight over rich condition at operating RPM, look for heating of the fuel line before the pump, shield or re-route to ensure liquid to the pump, hope this may help someone. The expansion from liquid to vapor is several hundreds times of displaced space so vapor generated before the pump can travel back in the direction of the tank and the liquid pump will not pump vapor.

That did not seem like a very extensive post crash inspection prior to the next flight. No fuel line or filter inspections. No checks of the engine mounts for hidden cracks from the impact. No checks to see if the airframe and vertical fin were still true. Not many checks of any kind unless there was some extensive work done off camera. If we even get a chip light in the bush we are grounded until an engineer is flown out to inspect it and the metal is sent away for analysis. Glad it worked out.

I've watched a couple videos, he landed on the grass beside the runway, and the other one, he took off from the apron... Is this all okay in aviation?... (obviously he also went on the road and to a gas station... but I'm asking within the aerodrome procedures) Are these actions cool with the other aerodrome users and owners?

Ask Mike Patey his opinion on non-runway departures. He ground-looped Draco trying to take off in a crosswind on the active runway when he literally could've taken off in the width of the runway into the headwind. That was at a controlled airport, though. From a legality perspective, helicopters and ultralights frequently depart and land off-runway at small, uncontrolled airports. FAR 91.13 and 91.119 are gonna the be "gotcha" for things like that. If you don't overfly people/property at low altitude and you don't create any hazards or otherwise recklessly operate your plane, then I don't think there's any issues. My personal opinion is that a few of the on-road landings have been in less than ideal locations, and the apron departure was perceptibly unprofessional, yet ostensibly safer than ground looping it on the runway. The Draco crash probably played into the decision making on that which makes it very understandable. Perhaps he got some pressure from the FAA and that's why he ditched the Kitfox a year ago?

hopefully the word travels around to others with the same plane about the fuel pump and the return line you added (brilliant)! I learn a lot about my Jeep on Jeep forum. You should share this on a Kitfox forum! My wife is a student pilot right now so it's fun to watch your crazy antics. She is yelling at you from the other room. LOL. I'm late to the party here but I'll probably catch up and binge watch all your videos in the next few days! Peace Out!

Aviation gas rarely vapor locks. However, from personal experience, when running car gas there were two obvious problems I noticed: the mixture control always had to be set richer to obtain the same power as aviation gas which indicated that car gas isn't as dense as aviation gas. The other problem was that after landing the engine has to be allowed to cool or there would be a vapor lock problem if the engine was restarted too soon. What happened was we had landed at Marysville Airport in California to eat at the airport restaurant one hot summer day. There was a for sale sign on the closesd restaurant door. We jumped back into the plane, taxied out, and took off. Two things happened simultaneously upon passing the end of the runway: the engine started sputtering, and a wasp came buzzing into the cockpit from the right air vent. What else could go wrong? After about 15 seconds the engine cleared, power resumed, and my wife smashed the wasp with a Kleenex. It was an interesting flight. After that I only took off on the tank with aviation gas.

@@douglasrodrigues9329 the difference in av gas and auto gas is octane.... then governor Davis came along and his brother got contacts to dump toxic waste into gasoline they passed laws requiring ethanol and in that law other things were allowed to be dumped .....cars and trucks (they dumped toxics into diesel too) started breaking down in excessive masses and only in Calif they still dump toxic waste into gas .....corruption in Calif is terrible...... because of demon rats..... it used to be a gasoline Coleman stove burned clean now they plug up terribly..... but still vapor lock is almost always what people blame on what they don't know...... you'r aircraft must likely did not stutter from vapour lock ..... more likely was detonation from over heating.... vapor lock and carburetors are the things that non mechanics blame stuttering engines on.....carburetors do not vapor lock they are designed not to.... if an engine stutters its because of timing or primary electrical system 90 percent of the time..... in an aircraft application altitude will cause rich mixture which can cause flooding if not adjusted.....I don't think many pilots can explain how mixture should be adjusted for their aircraft..... if v you run lean your engine will heat and if head temps exceed recommended you will likely experience loss of power from detonation if to rich you will lose power from the extra fuel using space for air and also causing hydraulic action because its liquid and not a gas and the excess fuel drowns spark shorting it to ground just as if you touch a screwdriver to the top of the plug erratically ..... you're stutter was probably caused by the engine heating causing intake air to be heated thinner and so you were running rich .... anyway vapor lock is the excuse given by those that do not know engines and those that think they do... no offense intended just education..... most describe vapor lock just like this guy that crashed that's not what happens vapor lock is the fuel in the float bowl boiling and vaporizing the block has to be extremely hot for this to happen..... now if you have a fuel line with a pin hole in it you can get air in the system which will cause a fuel pump to not properly function .....a fuel pump is a hydraulic pump....air bubbles in hydraulic systems cause failure..... gasoline will boil at between 100 and 400 degrees depends on octane and other additives

The return line you put on “looks” like it goes back into the suction line to the pump? If so that is doing absolutely nothing, all that will do is circulate the vapor back to pump, not clearing anything , the return line needs to go back to a tank. I fly in 40+’c temps done properly you won’t have vapour locks
