He felt for the "white knight scam". It's a scam where two people in a white van try to sell you something, but last second a third stranger "saves" you, only to get a bronze statue in return.

This is different then how i got scammed, they just put me in the van then i got sold for 200 bucks

If this type of scam existed in Hungary it would go like this: -scammer offers person a stereo system -person accepts, takes it to car -scammer asks for payment -person gets in car, locks door, and leaves without paying

I found one of these speaker systems in the trash at my apartment complex in college... it was terrible. I didn't pay for it and I felt ripped off

So I actually bought one of these sound systems. They wanted $200 for a "$1500" system. I bought it (not knowing any better) and it sat in my apartment for a few months. Ended up giving it to a dude I owed money to to call us even. Best $1200 I ever saved.

I had a guy approach me with a pickup and trailer full of power equipment at the gas station once. He saw I was driving a work truck and might want a deal. I told him yes, but follow me to my shop and the boss will pay cash and probably buy it all. Idiot followed me back to my shop where two sheriff deputies that I radioed ahead to were waiting. It was all stolen, and the guy went to jail. Moral of the story... Don't try to sell stolen stuff to the sheriff's radio tech.

Same thing almost happened to me a few years back. I was in the middle of moving and had my little corolla loaded to the brim with nearly everything I owned, and took a break in a shopping center to grab some food and eat in my car. The guys drive up next to me and I look up at them with a burrito in my hands. They give the usual spiel and try to get me to buy em. I decided to have some fun. I'm still sitting in my car with my burrito and start drawing out a sob story. "I wish I could, man. I'd buy it, man. But I'm broke and having a shitty day. I'm living out of my car, I'm scraping by, I'm barely able to eat, my girlfriend left me, and on top of all that, my lunch order was fuckin' wrong!" "Oh, well shit. Tell you what, homie, I'll cut you a deal" "unless you're gonna give me lunch, I'm not interested." "Damn, dude. Well uh... You got any friends?" "Actually yeah, now that I think about it I've got a buddy not too far who's looking for a good sound system to go with his TV. Great guy, he should be off work right now actually. Want me to call him up?" "Oh, sweet, if he's right nearby yeah!" (I fake the call, make it sound like he'll be there in 5-10 minutes) "Alright, cool, he's on his way. He just got finished with his shift so he'll be here soon. He's just gotta stop by the station to drop some stuff off first." "Oh, station? Like the train station? That's not too far" "Hm? Oh, no, the police station, he's a cop. But that's not much further than the train station." "Oh, uh... he's a cop?" "Yeah, he's a pretty cool guy too, been buddies since we were kids" "And he's on his way?" "Yeah, should be like 10 minutes" "Oh, okay, uh, cool. Hey, gimme a second, I gotta get my phone from the car." And he just gets in the van and drives off lmao

And thus, andrew got assassinated for revealing the secrets of the white van scam.

Fortunately my introvert instinct when someone offer me something unexpectedly or tries to sell me something is to decline the offer and get away from them. I take detours in shops to avoid having to talk to salespeople, so if some random dude in a parking lot tried to sell me something I'd might literally run away.

99% of my interactions with strangers outside of "customer service" is just someone trying to scam you or beg for money lmao

I remember a time when a guy selling you electronics out of the back of a truck meant it was STOLEN. None of this technically legal cheap chinese knockoffs shit. Where has the world gone? What happened to good oldfashioned fencing of "hot" goods? also who has this kind of cash on hand? you sure as hell never take a third party with you to an ATM.. oh holy shit, he actually went to one.

You can tell it's a scam from the butter talk at the beginning, "hey this guy looks cool, let's ask him" if it weren't a scam they wouldn't say that

People like to poke fun at people who get scammed, but the truth is a lot of those guys can talk really well. Don't underestimate their salesman skills, and don't overestimate your negotiation skills and make sure everything always passes the smell test. If it smells like BS, then it probably is. I'm glad that guy was out there and you didn't get swindled!

A year ago this happened to me, and so I got a shit load of their time wasted, and at the same time, I told them, I'd get a few friends to buy some as well, but nope, I was a straight up asshole and texted my girlfriend and told her to call the cops, and 20 minutes later, three squad cars showed up and arrested them.

Huggbees is a Florida Man, that makes a surprisingly large amount of sense.

Me and my family nearly got puppy scammed over last fall, and we were nearly about to spend upwards of one thousand dollars, and we are grateful we saw the red flags when we did, but the very next day we found our now puppy and so I guess I could say it was worth it, and now we know not to trust anything 6 pages into the internet :)

I had this scam attempted on me in the parking lot of my bank. I was like, "what am I supposed to do with those? Who buys speakers?"

Someone HAS to animate this!

The biggest problem with these scams is a lot of times the products are either nonfunctioning or break easily. For speakers in particular, they often fill them with concrete to make them feel heavy and expensive, and either put cheap speakers inside, or just bolt on a facade. I work at a thrift store, and I see a lot of these, unfortunately.

Lol i went through something similar. I used to be a truck driver. And i had a guy claiming to be a truck driver come up to me and ask me if i was able to buy a bottle of cologne. He said it was a very high quality bottle and it was considered damaged goods because the box was broken. He said he wanted to sell it because he needed to feed his daughter or give him something for her birthday.... dont quite remember. I just handed him like idk 12$ in change. And tried to trll him to get his dsughter something nice. I figured it might be a scam. But who cares its 12 dollars. Well he gave me 2 of the bottles and left saying thank you.... i never used the cologne.

Must be an American thing... the only time I've seen those dodgy deals was when a guy offered to sell me the wheels of his bike after I complained about how bad my bike is... I said "No thanks" because well... how was I to carry the wheels?

That's how scams get yeah they just keep talking so you don't have a second to think anything over and they try to make it as fast as possible

We were also scammed back like 5 years ago by one of these scammers. They would stick old mattresses in new casings and sell as new, they even had a full website setup, company name on the van.. super complex scam and rather scummy.

They tried this stuff with me, but i told them i was driving my miata so there was no way it will fit. Then they pressured me and i told them i only buy Sony or Yamaha Audio equipment only. They are still trying to scam people in 2021

It's crazy to think that this isn't just some little local or regional scam, being ran by a group of friends/relatives. Instead, it's a complex system crossing borders and even continents. The "brand names" are made specifically for this market, and there's even been mention by former scammers of a complex distribution network (like you'd expect for legit products). In the early 2000's ('05, or so) they even managed to get a multi-page advertisement in Stereophile magazine (the mag is managed by a print conglomerate that was unaware (the contributors had no role in selling advertising)). I think it's slowed down a bit over the last 5-10 years (at least in my region, and maybe due to the internet making it easier to avoid). A number of years ago I had a young coworker say to me; "I guess when you drive a car like mine, people must think you've got money". He started the story, then I finished it for him. If he hadn't been so cocky, I probably wouldn't have said anything, but I broke the news to him......and I enjoyed doing it.

This scam has been around a long time. I ran into it in Idaho about 2000-2001. Didn't buy his junk, but did waste half an hour of his time.

When I was 18 in the 70s and working in a gas station, this was a thing. Nothing new. Was speakers back then too. Never fell for it.

My parents are mercy less with anyone, trying to sell anything to them that they didn't search for. I can remember when we were in France at our holidays. A man with a bag full of fruits aprroched our car. My mom pulled down the window and the moment the man asked if she would like to buy some fruits. She loudly said "get your rotten fruits of the road". She pointed at the side of the road and honked at him. Once when a scam caller tried his luck with my mother it didn't really go well either. She just sayed "NO" and "get rid of this number you won't sell us anything". And than there was that one case when a woman was at our door. I still feel a shiver down my spine when I think about it. The woman asked for money because she said "I can't feed my kids I have 6 of them". MY MOTHER.... my mom. She asked the woman for pictures.... And said "how weird your not on any of the pictures" and "strange that they all have different hair and skin colors". She stared right into her soul. The woman left IN SHAME. SHE WAS DEVASTATED. My mom is a loving mother. but sometimes I wonder how she got those inhuman powers.
