this should be the future of laptop/tablet design. It could either give you a small but very portable device (if they resolve the weight issue) or a big size screen that's manageable to walk around with. If this gets mass produced, the reduced price would make this VERY interesting. But foldable smartphones have been around for a while now, and still are ridiculously expensive and remain a niche product, so I don't see this happening within the next 5 years.

I believe that foldable OLED is still a technology seeking a problem. It's nice that this can be a chunky laptop or a nice big tablet with a bluetooth keyboard that still fits in your backpack. But do people really want that? Most people would be using "desktop mode" at fixed locations where it's just as easy (and much cheaper) to plug a regular laptop into a regular monitor. A 17 inch screen is awkwardly large to use anywhere but on a desk or similar surface.
@familyshare3724
@familyshare3724 Жыл бұрын
@@Phyrre56 it is a problem seeking a lower price. I want a 17" OLED folded in half. I travel weekly/monthly including 7 hour train journies, and destination often have only HD. I no longer want a laptop. I want a good keyboard, a good mouse, and a big monitor, all portable (with battery), and upgradeable.

Yes, I agree that this should, and probably will be the direction laptops should go. Ultraportables anyway. That's cool but it will mean a whole segment of "laptops" will be much harder to repair. I know with many of the Ultraportable laptops now many of the components are already soldered to the motherboard so I guess it won't make much difference. Progress I guess.

Regular people hate when companies innovate, which is why Apple products are so successful in our capturing the market. Apple products rarely change form or functionality, they just get continual spec upgrades. People like this because then they don't have to learn anything new and they just know things are going to work. Real innovation dies because consumers expect flawless products from day one and don't want to put any work into changing their routine. Look at LG, lots of hardware, completely loses to Samsung who continues to remove features year after year.

@@fkstudio5901 There are people who want a larger size screen in a convenient form factor that can step into a use on your lap or small space. I'm a little surprised you are asking. I understand it might not be for you but imagine doing massive productivity apps for 8 hours on a small screen, or walking around with a 17" laptop that is heavy and requires ~2 square feet of space. Imagine walking around with 3 devices on trips with all their associated peripherals. Each of these scenarios are daily challenges for different people.

I really like the idea of a folding screen and having it separate from the keyboard. I am pretty interested in fold devices but it is taking a bit longer to get good feeling and performing fold devices than I thought it would. @jeffhubbard6185
@jeffhubbard6185 Жыл бұрын
AR glasses as a monitor would be fantastic, the screen could be essentially as large or small as you want it to be. The only question is how they would deal with battery and processing? I imagine extra processors could be stored in a tactile keyboard because let's face it, that's not going away any time soon (at least not for laptops). But for battery, if you've got these augmented screens on your face I imagine they'll be used for everything, as a phone, as a wearable for notifications and quick actions, and as a laptop screen meaning battery would have to be really significant. Externally housed wireless processors could help with that, like maybe phones would become just mini tactile keyboards with navigational functionality and extra processing, essentially a small wireless keyboard. But even the display could die pretty quickly, and it'd be difficult to use when plugged in so you'd essentially be without your smartwatch / phone / laptop until it's recharged. Sure, super fast charging could help to mitigate, I charge my watch while I'm in the shower once a day and that's enough for my use case. My z fold 4 alos needs a little topping off for about 20 minutes each day, but I can still use those devices while charging so it doesn't really have an impact on my ability to use each device. I think AR and VR tech has come a long way, but until "wireless" charging becomes truly wire-less, it won't be a viable replacement for something like a more portable folding device. Don't get me wrong, I'm more excited for AR screens than anyone! But there are some major innovations that need to take place and become well rounded before augmentation becomes reality (pun intended).

What would be great in the future with this tech, is that it would allow you to bring monitors easily with you. E.g. a 24" monitor is about 30cm folded in half, which is about the same length as a 16 inch laptop. Imagine all the work space, all portable, in your bag/backpack.
@mbvglider
@mbvglider Жыл бұрын
More than a monitor, which would be very specialized, I'd rather have a foldable 24" tablet, which is about the size of a music book. I'd put an HDMI/USB-C/Airplay input for use as a monitor when needed, but it'd be far more useful if it could function just fine on its own as an ARM-powered smart device most of the time. With a device that big, you could have a 24+ hour battery. Classical musicians would all buy one for sure. I just think a whole, hot laptop in that form factor doesn't make sense, especially for Wintel mobile devices, which currently don't even have functioning sleep states and can cook while they're supposed to be sleeping.

User replaceable/swappable internals like the battery, etc., up to 32 gigs of memory vs only 16 gigs on the Asus and you can login with your face or the fingerprint reader on the X1's keyboard, and will be $2200-2500 starting price vs $3500 U. i'm excited and eagerly waiting for laptops like this to mature,. i think its really attractive and makes a lot of sense, but this Iteration isn't it. if its supposed to be ultra portable it can't be this thick. if its gonna be this thick it can't be this underpowered. its strange, it looks like a huge part of the thickness comes from the kickstand/spine sleeve. when the back is removed, its so much better. i think they should either embrace the chunky and build a thick 15" powerhouse like gaming laptops of old, that unfolds into an excellent 24" monitor that you'd otherwise never carry around. or this, $1500 cheaper and without that seemingly unnecessary kickstand sleeve. the thick bezels aren't even that offensive already being that large they could just as well add another 2mm on each side for carbon prongs that fold out to support the device. line the back with leather and the thing is lovely!

The only addition I would want would be a duel kickstand so it could also be stood up in portrait mode for working on certain documents where that is an advantage.

@@michaelxz1305 yeah I guess the gimick tax is going to be in place for a while. But eventually the prices will be on par with trad laptops. That's the main reason I don't have a Galaxy Fold 3. As soon as they are the same price as latest Pixel Pro I'd probably go for one even though I love the Pixel 3 I'm still using.

Yeah, for sure, agreed. If I wouldn't be gaming or doing high performance tasks , I would want this for my laptop both for office and home. Seems so sleek and convenient for the type of office work I do. The hiccups I see at the end of the video might be related to some caching problems - it doesn't effectively manage it - probably Asus engineers can tell us if it's Intel's fault, Windows or their own. Could also be throttling of course. But if it can be snappy for most of the time, it can be snappy all the time, so one of the parties still have work to invest.

@@MartinzW When I see tech like this I just expect that in five years or so it will be refined, fast and cheap. So I see this kind of thing as a proof of concept even though it's on sale.

I don't think it'll ever be cheap because a high-power foldable laptop computer will always be a specialized device. I just can't imagine its price ever going below $2k. A re-imagination of this computer as a low-powered Chromebook or Android tablet could be cheap, though, so there's potential there.

Sure it's a gimmick but I love the gimmick. Thing with laptops for me is how cumbersome they are. I love tablets for the portability and flexibility but these devices bring the best of both worlds. Huge screen to stand at your desk, have connected to other monitors etc, easier to use on your lap than a normal tab, book mode could be great for reading, and the idea of the optional keyboard is way more convenient than most tablet keyboards. Plus you have Windows, and once Android compatability is better you'll get the usefulness of apps for both OSs, not held back like an Android or iOS tab. Just needs to be cheaper and iron out the kinks a bit and I see foldables being a legitimate option for more than just the current niche. Just needs more time, and I hope foldables are able to survive past this clunkier start. I'm fine with a normal phone but a foldable PC is what catches my interest.

Great review! Loads of potential in this form factor. I have said for years I would love a 17 inch tablet. Fortunately or not, I am spoiled by the iPad Pro and can't see going to something like this until it closes the gap in user experience, better life, and physical finish. Thanks for keeping us all informed!

this is too small to be of any use, might as well have a 16-17inch regular laptop. However if the display could be unfolded into a pretty big display it would be amazing to carry around when you travel and require decent screen real estate for your work.

Disagree, because I'd be using it unfolded most of the time, as a single 17" screen. Having said that, I'd be quite happy with a 17" 2-In-1, to get the cost down.

I think that looks beautiful considering it's a Gen1 device. The major problem is the price...and that's a big problem. I honestly wouldn't want to spend more than $1500USD on the device at this point in time...especially with no cellular 5g capability. If Asus could bring the price to ~$1500 without making the device experience a laggy mess compared to what you've shown...I think some people would love to test the waters. Once the market has a base for the product, more and better/higher end features can be added and the price can increase to maybe starting $2300USD depending on dependability, durability and performance. Anything above $2300 had better have some serious use cases IMO otherwise the device is mostly eye candy.

Devices like this are a great idea. I have a dell touchscreen with a portable monitor for my work. Something like this could replace my portable monitor. It's just like me owning a Microsoft duo. It's not for everyone but for me fits me perfectly and alot better than any other phone on the market. Definitely keeping an eye on this market as I'm expecting Microsoft to look at doing something along the like with the Windows surface lineup.
