I fulfil a promise I made to my late father - to take him on safari.
I journey with a friend across the Great Rift Valley to Kenya's famous Masai Mara National Reserve, bringing with me a photograph of my late father and letters he wrote to me when I was travelling in east Africa in the late 1970s. It was the only way to fulfil my promise to take him on safari.

His parents didn't like him going to Africa but you just know his father was at least a little proud of him for doing that. What an absolute giga chad leaves his job and goes on the other side of the world with the only means of communication being letters. Damn that is just big balls. Beautiful video. Hope you're continuing to be better everyday & enjoying life to the fullest! Are you still doing longbows& whatnot? Gonna make any hedgerow videos? Any story's to tell?! Man I love all those films & have watched a few multiple times!:) Take care Mick. Best, John Klein

Hello John. That’s a very warming comment: thank you so much. Been away from cameras for best part of two years renovating and then moving into a property. I have plenty of stories left but I doubt I’ll return to the frequency of output as of old. Life is rather busy. But there will be others, though not about bows - I no longer make them. Thank you for sticking with me, I appreciate it. Keep well and safe during these troubling times. Best, Mick

Mick you have no idea how much you have helped me over the last few years. I was a heroin and methadone addict for 20 years I am now drug free since 2019 I got interested in woodworking as a child but I never had anyone to teach properly. I've made little shave horse. And buddliea walking stick I've grown over 20 different food plants including lemon 🍋 Orange. avocado .plum. apple. fig . From seed . I can name any fruit from these plants as they are a new verity because they are grown from seed .and I would love you to choose a name . I'm already calling my apple after the great gardening legend geoffrey Smith. Because his videos kept me alive and drug free during my darker days . Mick thank you for teaching me new skills and how to be a good man . Your lemon Orange fig and plum seedlings await your naming ceremony here in kildare Ireland 🇮🇪. Wishing you and your family and subscribers a very Happy Christmas 🎄 from Ireland 🇮🇪

Good evening Mark. You are the hero of your story, I am merely the player of the tiniest bit part. But thank you for your kind words which I know are not your first of such kind. Some things I never forget. It would be an honour to name a plant. I choose the name of a man who, by word and deed, helped me find a path many years ago. If you watch my video ‘Gone Deolali’ you can see him. His name is Richard Richardson, now long deceased but never forgotten. Please might I offer Richard’s name for a seedling of your choice. I wish you well through Xmas and into 2023 Mark. I hope you achieve whatever you choose to achieve. And give Ireland a hug from me. In a previous life my mother in law was from County Clare. And this year we bid goodbye to a dear man whose roots lay deep in Irish soil. With him on one occasion we had the pleasure of dining with Ireland’s famous poet John Montague. Good luck Mark and be well.

So glad to see a new video. I was concerned that something was preventing you someway. Looking forward to something from your shop. I'm well into my 70's now and lost my father when I was 27. Hello John. Thank you for your message. I too have many regrets but in a small way making this video helped ease them somewhat. Life seems potentially so long when one is young. I realise now that it is just a blink and lost to much pointless frivolity and waste. I expect our mams and dads felt the same. If only we knew that when we shared time on earth together. Keep well John.

Mick, I have sorely missed your videos, and have longed to see another. You did not disappoint, not that you ever have. Thank you so much for sharing what must have been quite an emotional experience, as well as an adventure. It is plain from your dad's letters that he was extremely proud of you. While it is indeed a shame you never got to take him, this trip was a wonderful testimony to the bond between father and son that so many guys our age felt, and the loss we still feel when our fathers leave us. All the very, very best to you, sir, and thanks for once again brightening the very end of one of my long days.

@@MickGrewcock Hello Mick! My bride and I are doing well, we've avoided COVID so far thank goodness. I've been working crazy overtime hours for the past two years, but since I've been almost exclusively able to work from home, it hasn't been all that bad (my wife doesn't care which laptop I am ignoring her with, mine or my employer's, so long as I am with her, lol!) We haven't taken any trips since right before the pandemic, and haven't had a desire to do so, but we have started venturing out for lunch and trips to the local garden centers on the weekends. Taking a trip such as your safari sounds AMAZING. We're laying low and trying to save our shekels so that I can retire, something that keeps getting pushed out thanks to the state of our economy, but still extremely grateful for having solid employment and abundant overtime. Take care my friend, it is pure tonic to see another of your videos. Be well!

@@jmfa57 Good to hear your news. We didn’t escape Covid, got us February this year, just seven days before I was due to fly to Africa. Not pleasant but we survived. Glad you are active and can be employed as long as you desire. Retiring is a big step, especially if one wants to remain connected, active and travelling as well as enjoying home and nearest and dearest. We finished almost nine years ago and no regrets. Essential that you are a self starter though, if you need the structure and timetabling of regular work then it could be challenging. Anyway great to be in touch again. Not sure to what extent I’ll continue film making but I think there are a few more in me somewhere. Stay well both. Mick
