On the Steps of Autumn. Our Corner of England. August - we call it summer - but nature knows different. Our meadows look exhausted, the gloss has faded from the leaves, fruit, nuts, and berries are swelling on the stems. It's a nice time to be in the woods: I use my pole lathe, shave horse and English longbow as summer heads towards its end. And as I walk our woods, I take a little harvest of firewood logs and when night comes badgers gather grass for bedding. We are truly on the steps of autumn.
Filmed using Panasonic GH5 and vintage Helios and SMC Takumar lenses, edited in FCPX and coloured with Daniel Schiffer's Atari LUT. Music by Johannes Bornloff and David Celeste, licensed by Epidemic Sound.

Hi Mick, just wanted to thank you! Because of watching your videos I wanted to have a go at a bow, and I did with an piece of ash felled in a neighbours garden. I have kept having ago again and again improving each time. And now a year late I have made 4 bows and one crossbow all whilst watching your ever calming videos. Thank you. And wish you all the best in times to come, sincerely Isaac.

Mick, thanks again for a masterfully crafted video. You've done your usual best in combining outstanding camera work, a thorough understanding of light and depth of field, and editing, which all of us take for granted as your story telling and narration skills lead us into a more pleasant frame of mind. Thanks again, sir, for a wonderful end to a hectic week. I look forward to more of your work!

John, you are too kind 😊 You understand the technical side of achieving these stories - but you should hold my feet to the fire and not let me get away with praise all the time 😉 Much of this one was filmed using a vintage Russian lens - looks to me far better than glass 20 times the cost!

Amazing footage. Thank you Mick. In the late 80's I lived in a very rural location in North wales, in site of mount Snowdon. One day when I was out walking a family (Do they call it a set?) of badgers just walked by me. completely ignoring my presence. It was an amazing site 2 adults and 6 pups. something that will last forever in my memory.

Well done indeed, my friend. I'm always excited when you come out with a new video. We seem to be having a similar situation here in Colorado. Temperatures are in the 90s (mid 30s to you) and we only get the rare thunderstorm, but we've harvested plums and bought peaches from some excellent orchards in the western part of the state. It still feels largely like summer, and we refer to it that way until September signals Autumn, but you can see that things are definitely changing. Thanks so much for sharing these.

Mick, your obvious love of- and interest in, where you are and what you do- reminds me a lot, of Fred Dibnah. Do take that as a compliment, as I consider the late Mr. Dibnah another "true" Englishman. Where he enthused about cast iron, engineers bricks and steam pressure- you do the same for foraging, bow-making and wildlife. Your hat is similar to his, too!

Great video! The end of summer is very bittersweet. Summer is ending here in Southern Ontario. Time to repair goose decoys and blinds. And say good buy to all those biting insects! Black flies, mosquitos. Deer flies, horse flies. All gone. Portaging canoes is more tolerable. Because of cooler temperatures. Fishing is at its best in the fall. Do you goose/duck hunt? It's a shame to keep your shotgun locked up during hunting season.

7:45 why do the badgers collect all that grass? What do they do with it? Why do they need it? This was such a beautiful, basic nature video. I love it! Subscribed!
@MickGrewcock
@MickGrewcock 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Samantha, I explain in the video but maybe not enough. Badgers live underground in tunnels and in this instance they are buried deep into a railway embankment. Within the network of tunnels are widened chambers where they sleep. Especially during the summer and early autumn they collect dried grasses into bundles and drag them underground to line these sleeping chambers - they become underground nests of grass and dry foliage. Periodically they clean out old bedding and replace it with new. At the time of filming this video, this year's youngsters were establishing their own place within the sett (the name of the tunnel system) and learning to gather bedding. Hope that helps - thanks for watching!!
