After many requests to do something related to hydraulics and 3d printing, I decided to design and 3D print a shock absorber. In the video, I explain how a shock absorber works, why you need shock absorbers, what bad shock absorbers look like, perform tests with it and then see how it goes.

A light spring would help the piston to recover so you don't have to pull it up each time. issue with plastics is they will fail faster than metal parts.

Nice. You can get rid of the internal o-ring and make the piston holes smaller. Also the RC industry has specific oils for shocks that come in different weights/viscosities that would allow for further tuning beyond hole size.

For oil to use, you can purchase shock oil for rc cars. It comes in all sorts of different weights so that you can tune the damping of the shocks by using thicker or thinner oil. Also if you made it a coilover that would make the hammering faster since you wouldn't have to pull it back up every three hits.

This is crazy. These would be great for some heavy duty RC cars. The shock prices can get really expensive. These could be done in a parametric way too, so the size of all the parts could be tweaked and adjusted for the application.

One thing you might also consider is adding a rubber dome with air inside or something inside the shock, since the compressed shock has less internal volume than an extended shock. I'm not sure it matters much at this scale, however it would be more true to actual shock design. (Thanks superfastmatt for the excellent video on shocks)

This is a great demo of hydraulic dynamics honestly. For some reason this reminds me of that myth busters myth where the impact from hitting water with a lot of momentum is just as hard as concrete. This also makes me think of that project farm channel where he experiments with all types of oils and engines in great detail. He's done a lot of experimentation so if anyone knows which oil is ideal for this purpose it's him. I on the other hand have no clue lmao but gg another great video Camden!

Thanks! The biggest reason why vegetable oil isn't very good for this is the viscosity changes drastically as the temperature changes, for example at like 3 degrees it becomes almost a grease but at like 30 degrees its nearly as viscos as water. Engine oil or actual shock oil is meant to maintain a fairly consistent viscosity between large temp changes so that is where I will start!

To take this to a version two and level it up you could do it. Audi does and put metal particles in the oil and use a magnet, the magnet on sucks the particles to the top or the bottom causing the fluid to be less viscous release the magnet particles fall into solution more viscous.

Now add some springy shim discs that mask larger secondary oil flow holes, to flatten the speed/resistance curve, like a real suspension damper. Just small holes are used, if you want an exponential speed/resistance damping curve.

@KnyfFite

Normal shocks have a nitrogen reservoir that is compressed as the piston shaft displaces oil. Yours probably burst because of an overpressure caused when you overfilled the cylinder and there wasn't enough air to be compressed.
@CamdenBowen

I considered having at least a chamber with air in the bottom separated by a floating piston, but was concerned that oil may seep past and fill the bottom volume so I decided against it

@@CamdenBowen That makes sense. Probably would have been fine with just a little more air on top, but those layer lines on FDM 3D prints make such good sheer points that it might have gone eventually anyway. Did you consider just soldering on a standard pipe cap for that end? Anyways, it was a really interesting video and I enjoyed it a lot.

Camden why doesn’t Tesla add alternators to their electric cars to generate its own power so people don’t have to go and park and recharge the batteries, is there a reason on why it is a bad idea?
@AusterEngineer
@AusterEngineer 8 ай бұрын
Because of how energy transfers and efficiency. An alternator or generator always have losses with their conversion from motion to electricity, not to mention the losses from all the other components. Point is, an alternator would never put back the same amount of energy back into the battery, resulting in a lot of energy loss. Another drawback is that alternators have resistance when put under an electric load, so it would actually make your car slower too, while just being a big energy drain. There is no such thing as free energy unfortunately
