Drama charting the latter half of the reign of Elizabeth I and the launching of the Spanish Armada by Philip II of Spain to attack England, Protestantism and Elizabeth I herself.
Ah, the first Elizabethan age. The Virgin Queen, Sir Walter Raleigh, the Spanish Armada. It's all here. Our favourite bit? The bit where Her Maj addresses the army with that famous speech on the eve of the Spanish invasion. It'll leave you in awe.

How about when the English bodyguard drew his sword on the Spanish diplomat? "WHAT DID YOU JUST CALL OUR QUEEN?!" Elizabeth's urging him "No, not now" probably is the only reason the diplomat kept his head. Calling the Virgin Queen a you-know-what?

What is funny about Cate Blanchett presence of stage and gravitas of acting is that you actually feel ROYAL AUTHORITY in her voice, she is every bit as regal as one can imagine, and her wrath when she says: "I too can command the wind, sir" is such that for a moment or two the viewer can be excused for actually taking the character word literally

The acting and commanding of performance has very much bk to do with the cadence timbre and vocal Posture. Some actresses have no understanding of this.. it’s annoying when you see them playing roles reciting commanding words but with no vocal authority... CB is a true actor

Why is it that British Queens rule better than their male counterparts?
@LisaMaryification
@LisaMaryification 4 жыл бұрын
Because they have to work 4 times as hard and be perfect so as to not make a mistake lest the male over-entitled criticize her then dethrown her. Women are critized much more harshly than men. You can have a bumbling fool as a king and hear very little murmering.
@teganbigone2366

British Queens (minus Mary Tudor) ruled better precisely because their male counterparts were heterosexuals with penises which get in the way of their brains.

@@LisaMaryification Nah, male kings are criticized just as bad. Nobody downplays King Henry VIII's murderous, lustful ways. Monarchy in general is heavily criticized because royal blood lines do not guarantee competent leadership. Yes, women have to work harder in male dominant cultures if they want to lead men. This scene owes as much to the Spanish Ambassador's uncowed snark (repleat with the understated curtsey at the end), which set him up as a formidable antagonist to "The Queen of ALL England". Without his considerable heft, the Queen's speech would have come across as an unhinged "tantrum" directed at some lowly and defenseless Spanish court lackey!

England has and will always be underrated. Something goes wrong in the world everyone turns to England for an answer. A sleeping lion tho tranquil and calm will awake to be something profound and unpredictable. The mother nation of the modern world. Stood on her own against the biggest Catholic nations of Europe and the biggest invasion fleet the world was yet to see and came out on top. There is something about English/ British pride compared to other nations that is simply overwhelming. This scene sets the stone. After this no power (other than the french) who still couldn’t quite beat them. Made it out on top until 1947. Without England the world would be a much worse place. Thank you Elizabeth for creating this pathway. Only England stands against tyranny whilst being the tyrant.
