Furlough for three months was an eye opener. Strength, motivation and tolerance improved hugely, with it being the focus every other day and running first thing in the morning instead of after work. The first week back to the rat race seemed to cause it all to ebb away again, other runners at work found that first week working and running hard too. Trying to maintain a furlough level of ability will be impossible I think. For motivation check out his book or the various podcasts David Goggings has featured on. Sounds silly but little snippets will worm their way into your subconscious and resurface when you need them.

That of sleep could be due to low electrolytes and or due to low liver glycogen stores from all the running. It takes around 48 hrs to replenish glycogen stores.

Training for ultras was 3 or 4 days a week and 3 or 4 days of rest. The week might be runs on Tue, Thu and Sat or Sat, Sun, Tue, Thu or Sat, Sun, Wed or some other like combination. The training usually was a long run with hills most weeks, a speed workout every other week, with the other days being tempo runs of 7 to 12 mile. My rest days were truly rest days. Nothing remotely like a workout. I tried a similar training regimen to the one in the video more than once and always came up injured. My workouts helped me do well in my age group competition so I feel they were better suited to my abilities and lifestyle.

I'm up between 0500 and 0530 and do all my runs first thing. 10-20km are run fasted and anything 20-40km are with my pack and food/fluids. I think it was interesting that the run you really really didn't want to do turned out to be OK once you'd gone through the mental battle of getting out the door. I think we can all relate to this scenario and it's nice to know it's normal and I'm not being a wimp when I'm tired and don't want to go out for a run.
@JonathanLindeque
@JonathanLindeque 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's runny how sometimes those runs that you're not so keen on, and start off with a grudge, often turn out to be great runs.... It helps a lot for the motivation... because next time you're not feeling grand... you think... hey! but maaaaaaybe this could be a great run! lol. I'll never know unless I do it (is my mantra then). I recently got a pretty decent time for a run I wasn't in the mood for (at the start) - I don't know... maybe it also has something to do with usually starting off slower on those runs - and finishing stronger.

It seemed like less running than I would have expected honestly. I think when I hear that Aliphine Tuliamuk runs 90 or so mile weeks now (likely more when actually training for something) I think about how long that would take me, but of course she is faster than I am. So it’s more “oh we each spent 90 minutes training Sunday morning” even if she covers 15 miles in that time and I cover 8.

It's so hard fitting training in around a full time physical job, and I'm only doing roughly 8-9 hours a week! I agree I've always enjoyed the mental challenge part of running more than anything else. Don't forget to listen to your body and know the difference between hurting and hurt. It might keep you off of crutches (like me).

Thanks so much, just back from solo, self supported fast pack on the southern upland way. 215 miles in 5 days, 23 hours and 29 minutes. Learned a lot on my first multi day ultra, 6 days of ultra distance. But loving learning some stuff here, especially the psychology side.

WOW...you are great! This was...eye opening. I'm 27 years old and have always been active and work stand up. I started running 9-10 weeks ago and decided to listen to my body instead of following a program. Last work week was ordinary 40 hours on foot + 10 hours running(90% easy), 2 weight training and some flexibility and mobility. I was thinking this is just bottom average for serious runner. Now i really don't know what to do. Thanks for video and greatest channel.

Hi Anna, I'm 48 and you've been such a huge help on my first hal marathon, I couldn't thank you enough, I have in my head the thought of running a whole marathon, I'm going to keep wat hing and learning to get ready, I cried also when I got to the line on my half, it's emotional, when you realize you are more capable than you've ever thought!💪 I wanted ro ask you if yoi could please pass me the pretzels recipe, I didn't get that. Take care, I watch you every day, sometimes I repeat.. Thank you!

Well done Anna! Inspiring stuff! For the last 3 years I have done an intense 4 month schedule for an annual 24 hour race each September where I have run between 60 and 70 miles a week at the peak of the schedule which I have to fit around a 10 hour working day. 2 lessons learned for me are 1. having the right nutrition - especially at lunch time (regardless of how busy you might be) so that the evening session is easier; and 2. being part of a group - even if it is only on line - so that you have the peer group pressure every day to get you out of bed and on the road!

I broke my ankle last year and I found it so hard to get back in form. I used to run 5 days a week, the usual, long slow, speed reps, hill work and tempo runs. To get back in shape, I ended up running slowly twice day, very slowly.. some times and hour in the morning, and an hour in the evening. Or I'd mix it up, 1:30h in the morning and 45mins in the evening and rest two days a week . Was back in flying form within a month. Running faster than ever. Love the video, thanks so much xxx

Great video! This is an interesting challenge and one that I feel would suit me. I am an early bird and run from 6 am onward as it gives me the start I need for the day. I work 10-12 hours on the computer and motivation end of the day is a non-starter. I am the same with fast running, long distance I enjoy it, 13 km Sat and 20 km Sun was the norm for me (just finished a week's holiday). My only concern at the moment is my back due to bad posture on the computer and kind of follows into my running... a big problem!

Good video you made it fun and informative nteresting. I find running early in the morning if you can get into the habit is most useful. Have your gear ready the night before. Get a warm glow for rest of the day no matter what gets thrown at you plus helps with my quality of sleep and general recovery. And you get to run with the sound of the birds waking while everyone else is asleep. I did the 4c4x48 David Goggins challenge at Christmas and that helped too - 48 miles in a weekend
