For any foreigners who do not know: Nattō is made from whole soybeans that have been fermented with a bacteria, similar to how cheese is made. It is said to have a taste similar to a malty cheese and can sometimes smell like ammonia. It is incredibly healthy and nutritious and like most fermented foods has great health benefits for the immune system. Thank you Yuka for another great video, I look forward to trying natto myself in Japan. 😊 Also, perhaps next time you could inform us of the differences in prices as I imagine some are more expensive than others? It's a shame the restaurant was fully booked but your icecream looked like a nice alternative. 😊❤

When Natto ferments too long, it releases ammonia. It's said that Natto is an acquired taste, but I would give it a go. I'll never say I don't like something if I've never tried it.

@@jimb-yi8zn just do as you like, but also consider that there are people who watch KZfaq a lot because they can't afford pay TV. Your comment is cynical. If you find one particular, natto flavor you like the best you can use it to make your own natto at home, using it as a starter, which is really easy. Mix with ice cream tastes a little better with plain natto, no sauce, with a little brown sugar added. We make our natto at home all the time here in Los Angeles. Great video, Yuka-chan!

@@CThomas-wg4gc Amazon has a pretty good selection of Natto starter./ nattomono and the soybeans are readily available from supermarkets like Super King, or any H-Mart type place (all the Korean markets are stocking lots of kinds of dried soybeans now) Basically, you re-hydrate the beans for a day or two in water, simmer them/pressure cook them (faster) for about an hour. Drain and sprinkle the nattomono (sparingly - a little goes a long way) on top and cover with plastic wrap and leave in a warm-ish place (like rising bread dough) until the whitish fuzzy shows up. We usually package the finished natto in Ziploc bags and freeze them until ready to eat them (they'll last 2 weeks in the refrigerator and continue to ferment)

I had to look it up on Google. The closest thing to it might be Indonesian tempeh since they are both made from whole fermented soybeans but in Japan apparently the fermentation process uses a special bacteria whereas tempeh is fermented with a fungus. Tempe in Indonesia is traditionally wrapped in banana leaf during fermentation.
