@@ArtistryofDebauchery - Well there are quite obvious advantages. IF, notice, IF you're in need to reduce weight, burn fat, get rid of diabetes and a big etc. If you're like the guy in the video, or me 30 years ago! LOL 😂 Intermittent fasting will not be of any "obvious" advantage. I had active live, regular training all the bells and whistles of a young healthy body. That at times went as low as 7% body fat with shredded muscles. Well in those conditions, fasting benefits will not be obvious. Surely. If in that meantime you also cut your sugar inputs. You know, those sodas drinks, processed foods, etc. Well then you have real benefits associated. All things being equal it's like cleaning your car, if it's clean it's clean. No matter how many more hours of cleaning you put into it! Quite obvious when someone stop to think about it. ;-) On the other hand keeping everything equal, BUT on a above 50/60 body, overweight, with a fatty liver, high blood pressure, high blood sugar (diabetes), etc. well than it's a different thing altogether. Cheers

The biggest tip I can give to anyone starting intermittent fasting is schedule it around your life. Don’t schedule your life around it. Have night out with friends? Eat late. And change the time you break your fast.
@emmaaustin2310

I fully agree with this! I wish Matt had used 9-5 as his eating window (allowing breakfast before his workout and substituting an evening meal with a light snack/small meal at 4.30ish) as it sounds like it would have suited his lifestyle more. There’s no point trying to use the same eating window as everyone else does if your schedule looks totally different!

I make it a rule to not eat until 12 and I eat breakfast, usually a big (yet healthy) meal and then wait till dinner and if I get really hungry then I eat something small in between. I eat dinner at 6pm. Then I’m usually fine for the rest of the night. You have to eat enough to feel satiated. And it has to be healthy. I have a problem with binge eating but ever since I started IF it’s the only thing that stopped it because the cravings and 24/7 hunger has stopped. I’m not as obsessed with junk food anymore. You gotta look at the science behind this type of thing.

I love IF. Been doing 18:6 for a few months and am down 30lbs so far (also cut out sugar). I can definitely see where someone may not like it, but it has worked out wonderfully for me and is a lifestyle change I can see being easy to maintain into the future (which was always my biggest concern). There are more benefits to intermittent fasting though. People like Dr Berg, can speak of the benefits. Apparently our digestive systems are overworked when we eat every few hours. The reason it may not have worked for him is cause he may have been eating too much carbs and not enough fats which may have made him become hungry more quickly.

I think you have to be in a mindset to do it also. It seems like he wasn’t really interested to do it from the get go. If you plan to try something, plan for it and try for real, he gave up right away. He knew he would do something that his body would react to it but had to mentally be prepared for it. Not a good exemples of trying for real imo.

GwnStef Actually, when the stomach is emptied, the body converts fat into energy, because it prioritizes muscle tissue. So, you shouldn’t lose muscle mass while fasting, unless you have no fat. Also, I don’t know what this guy was talking about feeling lightheaded. Working out feels exactly the same on my fast and I’m doing an 18 hour fast. Lots of people also workout right before their fast ends too, so maybe it was just in the video guy’s head?

Apaullo interesting www.daytwo.com/blog/nutrition-myths-facts-series-part-1-breakfast-important-meal-day/ this site also writes about how most of the studies they looked at were associative, but not causative. They mention that eating breakfast could be associated with more health oriented people. It’s a very interesting topic to read about, but i really think whether or not one should eat breakfast should be decided by if it works for the individual. Some people feel extremely tired without breakfast, others can live without it. Not all dietary rules apply to everyone.
@grainne9981
@grainne9981 4 жыл бұрын
Breakfast is extremely important as it is the time of day when we consume most of our fibre and fluids. When we don't have it we are more likely to suffer from dehydration leading to poor concentration and therefore poor work/school performance. We also get a ton of vitamins from breakfast so you really shouldn't skip it! Also, the fibre we get will help keep us full up until our next meal which prevents mindless grazing on HFSS foods and snack bars which can lead to excess weight gain.

I feel like you went into this with a negative mind set and didn’t really try. Like you didn’t plan your meals before hand like you’re supposed to and of course you’re going to feel light headed if you work out in the morning before you had any fuel in your system that’s why you have to move it later in the day during or after your eating time. You kept forgetting to eat and what you ate in between wasn’t that great of a choice. This isn’t a juice cleanse or a unrealistic diet. It’s something that makes a lot of sense and is sustainable for the body. If anyone’s seeing this, don’t let this video discourage you from trying. Just go into it prepared and try your best. Remember not to break your fast for the day with junk food but you’re allowed to eat a little bit of junk in a week if it keeps you going in the diet instead of giving up all together. You got this!!
@Harlequin52
@Harlequin52 4 жыл бұрын
Actually there are plenty of people who like to work out before they eat their breakfast, even when theyre not fasting at all. They dont get "light headed" over it. I do ADF, not IF, and I exercise daily and the only times Ive ever felt negative effects are for one of two reasons: Lack of proper nutrition the day before (eating junk food, fast food, or not enough of a variety of nutritious food makes for a bad fast the next day) or dehydration, because I personally find it unpleasant to drink on an empty stomach but it obviously must be done. It strange to me that he ate every single day and had this problem when I go for an entire day without eating and dont...

Thanks, I was thinking of trying IF and this video had me rethinking. As I have gone through the last 5 years or so past age 50 my gut is getting bigger and bigger and my back hurt more and more to where i can hardly sleep. Well I am going to give it my best shot, but it has me worried whether I can be successful as I have always had mild hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). If I don't eat fairly often I can get dazed and light headed, so not sure of a way around that?

16 hour “fast” is normal eating, it shouldn’t even be considered fasting...it’s just that people’s eating clock has shifted so drastically to snacking 20 hours of the day and sleeping less and eating more that eating in an 8 hour window frame has become considered a fast. 😢

Definitely 16 hours of fasting is not "normal eating". And not even 3 meals a day, which many people usually talk about (this comes mainly from English culture and is still based on the European medieval era). The most common amount of sleep for a healthy adult is around 8 hours a day. This gives a window of 16 hours for the rest of the day. The most recommended by doctors is to make the first food intake 2 hours after waking up and the last 2 hours before bedtime. This makes a "normal intermittent fast" last 12 hours a day and the feeding period also lasts 12 hours. The "normal" still, within that 12 hour period would be to eat 4 to 5 times.

I found it the easiest by staying under 2000 calories because it gives me more freedom on what to eat. Make sure you do some sort of exercise everyday, if you don’t, the process is will be slower and maybe the bad foods might get to you. Sorry this is all out of order.

Teddy bear yes, when you try to lose fat you can have your body fat in a certain area. Usually the areas that lose fat 1st to last is: Face, arms, chest, then the stomach region. It goes by blood flow, the warmer the area when you are at idle is most likely the area you’ll burn fat.

I just started IF. I've been dealing with chronic pain for a while and have had test after test done with no answers. Then I had to fast for a medical test and I noticed that I felt so much better the next morning after skipping dinner. I'm on day 4 now and loving it! My problem area has always been giving into cravings for bad foods in the evening and eating before bed. Now I eat from 10am-6pm, so night time eating is not a problem! Not to mention my sleep has drastically improved since I'm no longer dealing with acid reflux at night. And I lost 5 pounds the first 3 days! It's also much easier to eat healthy early in the day when my willpower is still strong. I've been eating lots of fruits and veggies...but not calorie counting. Just making common sense food decisions goes a long way in this diet and the smaller eating window naturally reduces your calorie intake. For me, that's a win! (I suspect that intermittent fasting works best when fasting later in the day.)

It's interesting that you find eating one less meal a day is inconvenient. To me, preparing or going out for a meal and eating it is way more inconvenient than just skipping it altogether. Nothing says you have to work out while fasting. Why not work out while you're in your feeding window or after one of your meals? It obviously requires some adjustments but it seems the willingness to make those adjustments is lacking.

"This habit is one of the most extreme movements" ... eh, what? In that case the health community has mellowed out incredibly fast since Water Diet. Also: 16 hours without eating "will push any sane person to their limits" ??? You gotta be kidding me. Half of that time you're asleep. Any Muslim / Muslima who's doing Ramadan druing the summer half of the year & north of Paris pulls that off. _I've_ done it for a few days. I've known 70 year old ladies who've done that before it was Intermittend Fasting ("no eating after 5 pm!"). Not even to mention that for most of human history it was a pretty normal thing to get a few hours of work in before sitting down to break the fast. Let's just say it's more difficult for some people than others? I mean, I've had moments when I might have signed off on "a day without chocolate is an unrealistic form of deprivation that will drive any sane person to their limits". Also, I can easily go 24 hours without a cigarette, while other people seem to get edgy after three hours.

IF works when you have discipline because over time, your body adjusts to it. So for instance, if you're awake in the morning, you can intake water, tea or coffee without additional ingredients that would break your fast. Also, lunch is technically breakfast in this case because breakfast literally indicates the meal or foods that break your fast after a long night! If this helps, here's my eating schedule-- 12:30-1PM breakfast, 3:30-4PM lunch, 6:30-7PM dinner. Whenever you feel like snacking, you'll realize it's boredom snacking as well. Though if you're saying energy for workouts, I do Chloe Ting's intensive workout schedules and adjusting to IF while working out within the fasting period helps me feel more mentally clear and motivated to work out for the food! I mean, of course these are my own thoughts and opinion on my body as I'm an ectomorph on a low-carb diet for health reasons, but I hope this is somewhat insightful to you or others who are on IF!

A lifestyle is for the whole year and I let nature decide when to eat and when to fast. Your digestive fire is the strongest when the sun is high in the sky. During Ramandan you eat after sunset, this is working against nature and will be bad for your health. Just consider that next time during Ramadan. It is really what you choose. I have done intermittent fasting for quite a while now (6 months) and I’m honestly loving it! It makes me feel so much better, healthier and fitter, My original goal was to lose 5kgs and although this may seem easier for some people, I’m more in the lower side of the normal in terms of BMI so it’s a bit hard for me. I’ve lost 3kgs so far and I’m planning on continuing intermittent fasting for a long time, it’s more of a lifestyle change so yeah! I’m only 16, can’t wait to reap more benefits when I’m older 😊 Btw, I haven’t been very consistent with it which is why I only lost 3kgs, if I was eating healthy every day then I would be able to lose weight easier haha Just 2 more kg to go! Woohoo!

Have just started IF. Long been an advocate for the medical benefits but had personally always been the regular meal dieting type with 14 years lifting experience. After Covid lockdown I am 10+kgs over my preferred weight and feel miserable (hate home workouts). I started IF 6 days ago and am aiming to maximise my fasts for the first 4 weeks with a minimum 18:6. Most days I sit at 20:4-21:3 with my first meal with the family in late afternoon. I eat well but am struggling to meet my daily macro targets but with weight to lose and yet to start back at gym I am okay at running large deficits. So far I feel great. No coffee just water and diet soft drink during feed times. Have restarted exercise this week and did a comfortable 9 on the beep test ( no cardio for 7 months). We will see how it goes but so far so good.

Because your body's hormone levels are dependent on the schedule you teach it. If you eat consistently at 1pm, your ghrelin (hormone that induces hunger) levels will spike shortly before that, even if you've eaten an hour or two before that. Hunger is not your body needing food, it's your body expecting food because you've taught it should expect food at that time. Irregular eaters never allow their body to regularize the ghrelin production, so they stay irregular. Same why some people actually maintain week long fasts, and one guy even fasted for an entire year. After some days, your body adjusts it's ghrelin production to your new schedule or lack thereof. Similar things happen in regards to your sleeping schedule, workout, etc. There is a natural disposition to certain schedules (since we are pack/herd animals, it helps to have variance in circadian rhythms), but ultimately you do have control over what schedule your body will follow.

I like IF actually because I didn't like the idea of diets but this is pretty straight forward. I don't need to watch what I eat (which is not crazy unhealthy anyway) I just need to keep an eye on when I eat. First month was hard. I thought about food all the time. After that it became quite natural. I'm more aware of eating because I need to rather than eating because it's the time that I normal eat. A lot of the time I don't feel hungry in the mornings at all. The most important thing for me was that I was not too fastidious. If I wanted to go for late dinner and drinks with friends, I will. But since this isn't a daily occurrence it means I generally stick to my timings.

I've started back at the gym at the same time & have lost about 5.5kg. Pretty happy so far, no issues & it has been relatively easy......can't wait to see how things continue.

@Carlos Mitchell Where does the word Breakfast come from? You're "breaking" a "fasting" period man. "break-fast" The fasting you're doing while your sleeping lol. We ALL automatically intermittently fast when we sleep man. Fuck science, just use common sense. Does it make sense for us to not eat for 8 - 10 hours (because you eat dinner then chill afterwards for about 2 hours) then wake up, then not eat for yet another 4 to 5 hours? Bruh that's literally 15 hours without eating. Um the human body needs fuel man. If your hungry, eat. Its not a hard concept. Try working out only eating once a day lol. How many times do you think world class athletes eat? I'm sure they don't starve themselves, I'm sure of it. The average even non pro athlete eats even more than an average overweight person eats. They just eat smarter. Eat smarter, Workout harder, fuck science.

After letting myself go and gaining 40lb in 2 years. I gained a very unhealthy attitude towards food, probably on a chemical level in my brain. I was never too full to eat anything. I probably carelessly packed in 2500 to 3000 calories a day, and I wasn't even doing physical labor besides walking to/from school. So I recently got fed up and did IF and counted calories. Cutting to 1500 calories per day, eating from 2pm to 10pm. I have been doing this for 3 weeks. I am already 15lb lighter (I know it's not all fat, I've cut weight before for sports). I think IF is good if you're lacking structure and balance in your life, where your unhealthy eating habits are merely an aspect of your overall imbalanced lifestyle. I had to start controlling something, and my eating habit was what had to change as it mentally affected me the most. I always felt guilty about eating when I knew I didn't need to eat. So in your case, I understand why IF wasn't good for you (which is a good indicator, I think).

I have been doing IF for nearly 4 months now without fail. I do 20:4 (20-hour fast & 4-hour eating window). I adjusted both my daily activities and my fasting to make both work consistently, and it does work for me. I prefer longer fasts because of the immense benefits they give. They also make my schedule a lot less complicated. Hunger is no longer an issue for me because I am in ketosis and I feel good when I'm fasting. I also do keto, which is what makes fasting effortless. When you stop eating carbs, your hunger goes away. I have made fasting a daily part of my life and I will never give it up for as long as I live.

As someone who’s been fasting my whole life once every year for 30 days, I’ll be the first one to tell you: it does matter what you put into your body! You can actually feel the difference. Sure, eating a donut after a day of fasting compared to not fasting has a less negative impact on your health. However, your body is in need of nutrients when you starve. You are resetting your metabolism system, flushing the toxins out your body so therefore your body must have nutrients. Your body will go back to its normal state after fasting if you eat awful but if you eat well, you will feel and see a difference
