Hello friends 👋 Today I'm sharing my experience with electrotherapy: using the NuFACE for 3 years as well as my experience using EMS (electrical muscle stimulation).
Both NuFace and EMS are types of electrotherapy, in which devices stimulate muscle contraction through electricity. :)
Also: NOTHING in this video is sponsored--I have purchased everything with my own money. As always, let me know if you have any questions.
Hope you enjoy!
x

There was a Medspa which was giving free trials of EmSculpt so I jumped on a trial right away. I think it was just on 60-70% for 15 minutes. So, having that experience, I would say that using a $30 TENS unit on my abs created much more of a cramping sensation in my abs. Actually, I usually can’t use the TENS unit at full power on my abs because it cramps so badly. But according to the internet, EMSculpt is much more powerful than a TENS unit. What do I know?

Wow, I was actually part of the team that created the prototypes and early runs of all the NuFace devices when I worked at Clarity Design in Poway, California. They make them in Mexico now, but they’re still good quality. Not that anyone would care about all that, LOL, but it made my day to randomly come across this video! P.S. this creator seems really sweet and likable! 🙂

I was hoping you would have a video about micro current! I began religiously using my NuFace in 2013. I started using it with aloe vera gel & to be truthful, often, I used it at full power with nothing but clean skin. I used it on my lips to plump them up, I used it on the skin above my lips to plump that up, too. It wasn't recommended yet when I began using it on my neck, backs of my triceps. I loved it! Now, I use it every night. After 2 - 10 minute cycles with my Omnilux LED mask, I use my NuFace for one - 21 minute cycle. Often, I use my NuFace on my lips before leaving the house for the day. NuFace has an LED attachment that does what the new Omnilux LED patches do. Skinvestments are so worth the money & time for me. Sure, it's about looking good, it's equally about feeling good!

I’ve been researching microcurrent and found some people report facial fat loss? Interesting that you seemed to have the opposite effect. I’m nervous to try. Thanks for documenting this.
@TheScienceofSelfCare
@TheScienceofSelfCare 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing! I have not had any facial fat loss and have never heard about this as a side effect of microcurrent. The fullness in my face from microcurrent was due to muscle mass increase (unrelated to fat). Typically heat-based devices run the risk of facial fat loss, like radio frequency (and microneedling with radio frequency), Ulthera, etc. I’ve never read about any fat loss from microcurrent so I personally am not concerned about that. :)

I watched this video and was shocked at the great results! I wish I could have experienced the same, but on my end I did experienced fat loss (while I had pretty big chubby cheeks due to genetics, always used to look 10 years younger). It sadly happened after using it for a few months, looking older now and I have stopped using the device since then. Now considering getting sculptra to restore the loss of volume :( (Note that I have siblings in their 40's and they're still chubby and looking 10 years younger, so my face shouldn't have melt that way despite my aging. I'm 33 btw)

I've used Nu Face a handful of times on the smallest setting. What I've got developed as a result of these few times within 1 week time frame, is a line over my upper lip, blocked ear lasting about 2 months and little twitches on the side of the affected ear that lasted 2 days after first time I used the device when the gel dried up. I never used it again and sold it on ebay. The fact is that with age our muscles tighten up and what we should work on is to relax them.

There's an additional effect not "officially" studied from electrotherapy and that effect is it kills viri and bacteria. So I use microcurrents for that medicinally. You may have already noticed with the NuFace you may have noticed less acne. While I don't have any special devices I use a small plasma ball on bug bites, after a cut, on any zits that appear on the skin. Years ago I had a staff infection in the skin and that wasn't budging on the antibiotics and put two leads on a battery pack (which of course is a micro current, which is really based on how conductive the skin is) and just went around it for 3 days in all directions making a direct path through. It went away quickly. The NuFace device may show results when you do have a skin irritation and give it a few zaps. Great fun video and I love the excitement you have for the nerdy stuffs!

Hi. This is the first time I’ve heard that EMS is used for muscle toning. Usually, people use it thinking that it is a machine designed to allow more polar ingredients to penetrate the skin. I also have a cheap EMS machine made in China, so I use it when I have time. But it is not anything I totally rely on. It's not that common for men , but after reaching a certain age, I visit a dermatologist for collagen boosting. (It is a procedure called TUNE FACE. It is a procedure that helps create new collagen by condensing collagen with about 60KJ of heat energy. It costs about 500,000 to 600,000 Korean WON, which is about 500 U.S. dollars.) The doctor said it was not that often for men to go thru it, I'm not married yet, so she underarands it. (I usually take metformin on a daily basis and often do intermittent fasting, but there is a difference between having long telomeres and looking young.) I try to follow the Buddha's opinion that birth, getting old, becoming ill and death are not anything you can get away from, so don't be obsessed with what you believe exist, but looking old was too much. It was mentally depressing, so I do it for psychological purposes too. I somehow felt free to reveal my shallow ego without worrying about being criticized in your channel. My mom used to pick on me when I look at the mirror and be insecure about things when I was a teenager. Bryan Johnson, that super rich guy is taking an experiment on himself. I read about him on the internet news. I also try to cheap things(metformin, work out), but I envy him. The world would learn something from him.

You seem to visit your homeland. I wish I could see some videos of Netherlands someday. Oh, was portable EMS really that strong? Bigger muscles of mastication 'might' have to do with also age. At least for me, or people that I know. I sometimes get botox for that region(2 or 3 times so far). This comment made me feel supershallow, but all right😮. Christmas is around the corner, hope you stay healthy, and enjoy life! And using that for your lips may be a good idea. I am not 100 percent sure, but some celebs in America have super big lips. Maybe it is one of their beauty standards. Your lips are more natual.

Taking care of skin is seen as less vain and more practical (one way of getting ahead of others), maybe that is why some skin products are a bit more sophisticated.(if Korea can do it, America and many European can do it. It is a cultural thing I would say). Everything old is new again! Wayyy back in the day when TENS units were first introduced they were supposed to be therapeutic for rehabilitating muscle injuries but you KNOW the first thing people did was put them on their abs. We all used to lie around in little stripmall shops, either in tanning beds or having our stomach buzzed to make it contract and supposedly replicate sit-ups. I have a NuFace Mini also, and since people are seeing improvements almost immediately in their jawline and lower face I'm theorizing that it acts to move fluids like gua sha on steroids, possibly through pumping action of muscle microcontractions aiding the sweeping movements recommended by the manufacturer. People in different age groups may also experience different effects -- those older may be more susceptible to noticeable fat loss than those younger. So I concentrate on areas I'd like strengthened to lift more effectively, trying to counteract gravity. I do use a split-face routine on this, as we all have a bit of asymmetry from one side to the other so I'll work one side of my face longer/more often and it really does help even things out. After watching this vid I am absolutely going to start using it on my lips as well.

This technology (electrical muscle stimulation) definitely works. I bought a slimtone connect abs belt and saw massive results very quickly despite being someone who already did abs exercises often. I do put the setting up to maximum which is… tough… No idea what the advantage on using on of those expensive €100 per session machines is, with the belt I bought it’s already at the threshold of what I can physically tolerate so I can’t imagine it’s a power thing…

@@TheScienceofSelfCare yeah I was a bit skeptical at first as well. Here is what I gather from what happened, they were developed in the 80s ish, and they were over marketed by the pioneer companies, people literally bought them thinking they could sit on their couch and eat junk food, wear the belt and lose 10 kilos and grow a six pack, so it earned a reputation for being a gimmick when that obviously didn’t happen. Now companies tend to do a better job of managing expectations, and for best results it should be combined with occasional abs workouts as they compliment each other, and ensuring you are doing cardio to lose weight if needed. I am already at around 13% body fat so it’s just a case of toning my abs. Also using it at higher power seems to make a big difference, but yes I would say the results are very noticeable, I have no doubt in my mind, and I am someone who approaches all health wearables with a healthy dose of skepticism. This particular belt seemed to be the best on the market, it works with an app. In the Uk it cost £299.

Thanks for sharing! I love the idea of creating a community where it’s easier to share. I’ll look into some potential ways to make that happen. 🥰 And for people with lip filler: I probably would be careful with microcurrent because of the potential for migration. One other thing that might work for lips with filler is gentle microneedling over the lips. This also can stimulate collagen in the lips and seems less likely to cause migration/ issues.

Great video! Thank you for sharing🩷 I’ve always been curious about nuface, I would definitely purchase to help grow my cheeks. I wonder is it safe to use close to the under eyes?
@TheScienceofSelfCare
@TheScienceofSelfCare 6 ай бұрын
I have used it close to my under eyes and it’s been totally fine! Sometimes when I’ve been playing around my eyeball has vibrated slightly but nothing harmful. Just keep in mind that this device works on muscle, so it’s only going to grow areas that have decent muscle mass (like cheeks). 🥰

Is it safe for face fillers?
@TheScienceofSelfCare
@TheScienceofSelfCare 20 күн бұрын
Hey there 👋 thanks for your question! In theory, yes. According to NuFace it’s safe to use 2 weeks after getting fillers. But I have also heard that fillers can potentially migrate overtime so I would be a bit cautious? Not sure! My personal guess is that this could increase risk of filler migration. There are probably some good threads on Reddit about this! xx

Do you think this is do-able under the eyes? I feel like my eyes have sunken as I got older :(
@TheScienceofSelfCare
@TheScienceofSelfCare 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for your great question! I am not sure this would be the best solution under the eyes because these devices work on muscle. I think most cases of hollowing around the eyes have to do more with fat pad loss or fat pad shifting. Some other things I do to build collagen around my eyes are LED therapy and gentle microneedling. Hope this helps!
@MapleCheerUp
@MapleCheerUp 6 ай бұрын
I asked my derm about this and she said hollows are caused by fat pads moving. Nuface won’t really help with that but it can make the under eye skin itself look more refined and hydrated if you use a hydrating conductive gel. It helps with lymph drainage as well and some say they’ve seen their dark circles improve.

Thanks for your question. So this only stimulates muscles. If you mean breast as in female breasts, then no because those are predominantly made of fat. Also I would personally be careful with electrify around the heart. Sounds a bit scary and this is not intended for that.

Nuface doesn't reach your muscles, it's not EMS, so that's not entirely accurate. It works only on the top layer of the dermis - it doesn't contract the muscle itself. EMS does that. Microcurrent doesn't - at least not when it's the strength of a Nuface
@TheScienceofSelfCare
@TheScienceofSelfCare 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Yes-EMS and microcurrent are different. I did try to make it clear that microcurrent was less intense and more superficial. But to be clear: NuFace / microcurrent does stimulate the muscle and impact muscle tone. Here is a quote from NuFace website: “This cutting-edge approach utilizes gentle electrical currents to stimulate the muscles beneath the skin, resulting in a lifted and toned appearance.”

@@olga_b344the mask I own from The Light Salon has these little black eye tunnel inserts. It’s a little hard to explain, but they block out a lot of the light and they can be added or removed easily. “ to be honest” the second photo with the earbuds and you write “look how full my face is”. That photo has been altered and respectfully it’s not done well . Looking directly at the photo to the left of your chin, your jawline is lumpy, and there is a flesh tone Blip what should be your black jacket? It’s very obvious … And it’s disappointing .. I have the NuFACE mini as well, and I enjoy it… Messing with your before photos is just not necessary.

All I can say is that it’s genuinely not altered and I have no incentive to do so. This is not a sponsored video. I’m just trying to showcase the results I observed in real life.
