HELLO, HI, WELCOME!!! In 2024, I'm going to try one new sport every single month as a beginner to show you that trying new things doesn't need to be so scary, and you can give everything a go at least once. This month I tried out squash.
Let me know if there's any sports you'd like me to try.
I'm Emily, and I've built a community of almost 100k people talking about the joys of slow running. I'm currently training for the Brighton marathon in April but I also wanted to set myself another goal for this year.

I'd recommend using a beginner ball - blue or red dot would help a lot in terms of longer rallies and practicing technique. Great video and intro to squash though!

@@RunswithemilyI second this. Squash balls are supposed to warm up. Like, literally the BALL warms up. To do that you really need sustained, hard hitting rallies, but once it’s warm it’s a totally different ball. Way more bouncy. That’s how it’s supposed to be. So using a beginner ball (blue dot, or red dot) compensates for the fact that it’s not getting so hot. The game is beautiful. So much tactical play, movement, attrition, skill. It’s amazing. If you haven’t pulled up any videos of pro squash, I’d recommend it. I’m a high level amateur and regularly get my heart rate into the 180s during match play. It’s an exceptional workout, and the better you get the more of a workout it becomes!! The pros are frequently into the 190s, and with matches that often last an hour or more! I hope you give it another go and the sport grows on you!

Squash is definitely not a beginner friendly sport, it takes a while to get a feel for the length of the racket and you'll probably miss more than you hit. It's really fun once you get good enough to hold a rally for more than 2-3 hits, although that's when it starts to get really exhausting too. Unfortunately the short-burst, high-impact nature of the sport makes it harder to bring into the mainstream

Definitely get a beginner ball - they bounce more. And, think about getting a private lesson or two... they'll help out heaps!

Like some already mentioned use a blue dot ball. The dunlop red and blue balls are also slightly bigger than the yellow dots thus easier to hit. When starting, warm up the ball by rolling it to the floor using your foot for 10sec. This way the rubber oil inside it gets warm and the ball will bounce higher and for longer. Once you can hit the ball consecutiveliy there is no need to use the floor/foot method. Enjoy 😊 it truly is the greatest sport there is once you really get into it.

Speaking of kitchen, can you try pickleball? It involves dinking outside the kitchen.

Adjusting your grip on the racket will really help your improvement on both sides of the swing. You can also initially hold your racket a bit higher up on the grip and you may find that also makes hitting in the ball a bit easier

@@Runswithemily this holding the racquet higher up shouldn’t be carried on once you are more confident though as it inhibits generating power on the ball. However it still has its uses at a more advanced level(digging the ball out of the back corners) . A good analogy I was told was to swing your racket like you are skipping a stone(I.e the elbow leads then the forearm then the wrist), forehand knuckles point to the ground and backhand they point to the ceiling. Once you got the hang of the grip and the swing you can then focus on the right place to position yourself, just behind first bounce of the ball and shoulder parallel to the side wall(if you are hitting straight) if moving on to the ball on your forehand, you should lunge on the ball with you left leg; use opposite leg for backhand. The KZfaq channel squashskills should help if you have any trouble visualising these things

Not sure who Josh is, but he doesn't know how to swing either. You'll find alot more success with just 1 or 2 lessons from a local pro.

I love Squash but it's not a sport you can come and play with any chance of success just like that. Although the fastest racket sport is badminton (shuttlecock speed), badminton is probably an easier racket sport to start off with if you are a complete novice to racket sports in general. When you watch top squash matches, they look easier than tennis but this is because the top players have great reflexes and anticipation. They make the court look small unlike in tennis, but when you play squash, you'll find the same court enormous in size and you won't be able to get anywhere close to the ball, let alone to returning it. The ball in top matches does not bounce much either, so as it's not bouncing around everywhere, it can look easier, but this lack of bounce means you have LESS time to get to the ball, which means you have to be even faster. All this makes squash a very deceptive sport to assess as an outsider.
