So, I Downloaded 10 Years Old Factorio...
Factorio was created in 2013 ( or 2012? idk) and it was way worse back in the day, but are you sure about it? I wanted to check out how playable is Factorio alpha, so I downloaded the oldest version I could find and played it for hours. It's my whole story from ship crash to launching a rocket, I hope you will enjoy this Factorio Gameplay

yeah for sure, when i got it in early access maybe 6 years ago it was basically a full game. and every improvement after that has been extra. really shows how this game is a labour of love for the developers.

@@M0torsagmannen The company ethics are good. Their single purchase with mod database license is a really neat model. No microtransanctions, no bs, just buy the game and get licensed support.

Tbh, I always felt like the furances looked just a slight bit out of place, same with T1 electric poles. Looks more like a youtube survival channel thing than the clean, mechanical tools/buildings synthesized by our quasi-magic tools. Same with the research building, actually. Looks a bit weird, compared to later high tech buildings. That said, stuff like the smelters and steam engines lack some detail, but look pretty good already.

My best theory for the stuck items on the belt is that the items had actual collision rather than just being a picture with a number value

They did. There was a big blog post about how they overhauled the belt system so it wouldn't calculate physics on all the items, and that also gave us the more standardized belt mechanics we have today, including things not getting stuck, corners not slowing down throughput, and inserters not picking things up from the tile after the end of a belt. If you want full throughput around a corner, you have to have a splitter, two corners, and a joiner.

@@evanharper4931 Nah, new ratio is much easier to balance: 2 steam engines per boiler, 20 boilers per offshore pump. So 1:20:40.

I'd like to see a mod that changes biters into hostile engineer factions. Like they're fighting with you over lands and resources. Imagine them raiding your with tanks or even helicopters! Oh wait, that's already is in the pvp multiplayer...

I think more advanced enemies like that would be an interesting difficulty setting, of if they evolved into things like the creeper and rocket turrets

Yeah, I personally hate it when I'm just chilling in the wilderness and I move in to take down the lion sleeping under my favourite tree only for him to evolve into a missile silo and nuke my entire country.

This version still has a lot of vestigial quirks from modded minecraft (which was the key inspiration behind this game), before they got rid of them in favor of making a better game focused on one thing (automation), like the mouse buttons, stack sizes, monsters dropping items, chest slots, etc.

Ye, I was surprised at just how obvious the connections were. Like, I doubt minecraft mods started automation as a thing in games (strategy and 4x games definitely seem like more likely seed beds, although i lack connections to those games and there modding), but I'm pretty sure it was one of, if not the first place automation became a major, and possibly core, part of the gameplay loop.

@@midori_the_eldritch obviously "automation" is too broad of a category to have an original concept for in circa 2012. It's the specific way modded minecraft (most famously the Feed The Beast modpack at the time) did it with single-block machines that converted one resource into another while consuming a fuel and piped it into the next machine with 3D space being an important factor when building your larger factories. IIRC I saw somewhere a long time ago the Factorio devs directly stating FTB as their inspiration (and, minecraft youtubers such as xisumavoid were the first people to make this game famous that I know of). However modded minecraft still has a lot more aspects to it as well aside from automation, that's why I specifically mentioned that in my original comment, since Factorio drops a lot of the "cruft" in order to make more room to focus on this one gameplay loop.

@@fdagpigj ye, hence my specific mention of being a major to core part of the game. The first place I saw automation being the core was in the ftb challenge maps, and I can see the inspiration. I also remember hearing that modded minecraft was a major inspiration, and I love the gaunra has been spreading ever since.

Interesting development history. Looks like the early versions were going for a "survival / RTS / production" mix rather than factory-building game with some combat elements. So, in the beginning, it was much like _Mindustry_ where production was close to a means to an end (which was ammo supply and defenses), unlike recent Factorio versions, where combat is basically the means to an end.

@@achtsekundenfurz7876 to be fair, once you tech up enough, biters are basically an annoyance. Some of the biter overhaul mods help keep it spicy, though.

Yes I've heard that "Rampant" is one of the best. Looks pretty unforgiving; with it, DS becomes harder than vanilla DW.

I was expecting less, but factorio truly is a polished game. Great video as always! It looks playable and fun. It's kind of interesting to see intelligent "biters" enemy. I'd like to see a game mode where biters don't get larger due to pollution but get smarter and then trupen your base with turets

I was one of the first people who played Factorio. It was some super early version my friend was working on, I spent about 30 hours playing it and then I was pushing them to improve it and work on it more. That version didn't even had any research and you had to manually connect wires to all buildings, etc.

Honestly a very underrated game that had been worked on for many years, some probably got drawn away because it was overcomplicated for a few arriving audiences. I see your channel growing pretty fast though Trupen, I remember when it was only a few thousand subscribers. Now I come back and see above 70k. Keep it up and you might actually create a lot more attention for the game!

@@Trupen Versions that end with .0 are considered major (for example 0.16.0 or 1.1.0) for Factorio but it would be easier on the last minor update for each major version because you get all the bugfixes and small improvements

I also did a playthrough of 0.6.4 a few months ago, it was a lot of fun but boy are those ore patches and rocket turrets a pain, especially in the late-game with beacons and such! :D

This game should be a must read and watch for any upcoming game developer. Right from the first version, the gameplay concept as clear as day, the idea, the core was there right from the start. It has been polished and expanded upon. But even if you compare the first version to the final, anyone can see its the same game.

The oldest version is a Pre Alpha version that Bentham from Mangled Pork Gaming got his hands on and made available for download. If you look on his channel, you should find some play thru of it. I myself go clear back to .07, right before they added gates.

It is actually way more similar to modern Factorio that I tought. I know there were some earlier versions, that were horrible in UI and graphics, but that is not half bad. A lot of sprites, map generation principles, etc are almost identical. I believe I played Factorio for the first time around November 2014, and it was already quite different and very similar to modern Factorio in many aspects. Most of the ratios and research was already kind of similar. I remember even fluids (oil) were exactly the same (modulo ratios) as modern Factorio.

This version is much later than the first version I played. See, in my day we didn't have any fancy rockets...or modules... Also, science pack 3!? What sort of wizardry is that? At least you don't have those crazy blue circuit things... Whelp, I'm out, but one thing first... You have things so much easier than I ever did.

the weirdest part to me about the older boilers is that they were essentially just a pipe if you think about it. they were inline, which by today's standards is just a weird and pointless advantage for boilers to have even though that's kind of cool.
