I turned my 2014 Honda CRV SUV into a camper! My old build vs. my new build. The Wanda!

Out on a Limb

A few years ago I had a full size bed built inside my Honda CRV SUV. I decided recently to have it modified, into a smaller bed. This smaller platform has proven to be so much more productive. I have more room for my other camping gear.
This is just a short video showing my old build vs. my new build.

I love this video! I’m considering this because of my current home situation. I can’t be around my family anymore. My car is the one place I can get away from them and be happiest.

My 2014 CRV is just like yours. I am stealing some of your idea to make it a camp-car. 😁😁 This is the first of your conversion videos I see. I am also a single-lady and my main purpose of this set-up is to be able to make the most of hiking trails by being able to spend more of the days there, and not having to drive home so tired afterward. So really, hiking and kayaking is more my thing than camping. I am just starting and so far I don't have much. I am looking at just one-night trips right now, and I need to be able to clear my SUV out easily because I also use it to transport my kayak to the lake nearby. Thank you for posting your conversion and the updates. I have gotten such good ideas. I also just subscribed to your channel.

FIRST, thank you so much for subscribing!!! SECOND, you can make your own window coverings!! There is so much you can do. I pack in way too much stuff. I swear, I think I pack more food than anyone, and then use 10% of it. I need to cut back. So many ways to use the space. I'm so glad I was able to help through my videos. PLEASE feel free to chat me up via email if you have any questions or you need any help! There are a lot of us single women out here doing this and a lot of them hike and kayak!!! On Facebook, join Butterfly Tribe Women Who Camp. There is an event page there where you can find meetups. It's a great tribe of women and they are all so helpful!! 💙

I just found your channel and I love this video! I had to pause when you celebrated your cross bar install! QQ: Do you have a moon roof on your vehicle? I have one and probably just need to research but can't figure out if it's possible to have cross bars AND a moon roof. Anywho, back to your show! :)
@OutonaLimbwithKym
@OutonaLimbwithKym 2 жыл бұрын
I do have a sunroof, but the cross bars do not get in the way at all. I can still open and close with no problem. Actually, I can stick my head out of the sunroof and adjust anything I have on the roof. My head doesn't hit the crossbars at all. Actually, does your moon roof pop up or slide inside the roof? That will make a huge difference. BTW, I plan on putting solar on the roof, but towards the back.

I have a 2014 CRV (only 41K miles) and now that I am retired, your video inspired me to think on the lines of a conversion camper option to do some travel across the US in leisure. Question - if you had a need to remove the spare tire, you have to take the entire bed frame out am I correct? That would be a hassle. Alternatively is it possible to push up the frame base to get access to the spare. Great job and thanks for sharing the details and of course subscribed to your chnl.

That is awesome! Thanks so much for subscribing!!! WELCOME!! My setup has changed a bit and I'll be doing another complete tour soon. RIGHT now, I can not access my spare tire (big mistake) because my bed frame is too heavy and I added a outlander kitchen on the other side. I need to make it possible for me to remove them both easily just in case. I really am pushing it. If I get a flat, I can call AAA, but I don't think they are going to help me get my spare. LOL! My bed frame does fold and can be taken out, but it's so heavy. I can do it with help. Oh, 41k miles for a 2014 CRV is excellent. You will have the SUV for a long time. It's a great camping car!!!

My build is behind the driver's seat. I'm only 5'3" and before I go to sleep, I have to put my driver's seat up as far as it'll go. I think it would be tight for you, unless you removed the passenger seat, which I see a lot of people doing. Depending on the SUV, you could always fold down the passenger seat. Mine doesn't fold. Hope this helps. 💙

you can probably move the passenger seat forward to get some more room. If i end up with a plarform like that i'll place it behind the passenger seat to get more room. i used have the Element. That car was amazing but i had to sell it because gas guzzler. There wasn;t much insulation and soundproofing but the floor was completely flat and entire interior was washable. I regret selling it. With '12 and later CRV honda engineers went to the bathroom and CRV came out. With the useless center console, garbage quality carpet, seat fabric, just crap from bumper to bumper.

6'3"? You'd definitely have to make your bed on the passenger side and take out the passenger seat or figure out how to build a table to lay over it. I'm 5'3" and the wood platform is a total of 3 pieces at 5'7" - pushing the driver seat up close to the steering wheel gives me more pillow room. So maybe 5'9" at the most.

No, I can't feel the wood. Back then, I had two - 1" foam mattress pads. Eventually, the second 1" foam mattress ripped, so I purchased a 2" gel memory foam. So I have 3" of padding and I can't feel the wood. Even when I turn. When I had just the 2", my hip bone would hit the wood as I was turning from side to side. Since adding the gel memory foam, I never feel the wood. The gel foams are very nice!!!

No, every state is different. Definitely have to research the area first. Your best bet when starting out is to sleep at truck stops. Pilot J and Loves are great travel centers. You will find other campers there for the night. It's safe and you have a bathroom and food it needed. I have everything I need to use the bathroom inside my SUV. If I can use a facility, I do that. At night, I never leave my vehicle to use the restroom. Once it's dark, I'm inside for good.
