Well, with 3 years in and hundreds of oil pastel paintings, I've changed my mind on fixative. In this video I talk about some of the fixatives I've used over the years and my experience with them. I now have a clear favorite. Watch this video if you're interested in giving your oil pastel artwork 100% protection just by using a final fixative. I'll demonstrate in real time my favorite one. It took 11 layers to get full coverage with it, but it is solid (practically bullet proof !!) and fully covered. This is more than just "smudge" proof.

That’s probably the least effective method of spraying. You want to sweep before and past each end. if you want thinner layers you sweep faster, thicker layer sweep slower but keep it linear. The erratic movement is guaranteed to give you uneven coverage.

Hi Rich! I’ve subscribed as well. Not many good oil pastel painters out there. I love using it for plein air and use baking parchment paper to lay over top to carry it home until I can use the fixative. Would love to see a demo video on using mineral spirits to blend and create underpainting. BTW I do my oil pastels on cold press watercolour paper that I put a gesso coloured ground on then 1 coat of Golden pastel ground (taped to lightweight coroplast board or cardboard). Works great and I can do a lot of layering.

I do have a full length video showing how I use craypas expressionist for the first layer and then using a brush and terpenoid to spread out the op and cover the paper. The video is "Old Mill House". There are 3 parts. Using Arches Cold press Oil paper in that demo as well. I haven't tried watercolor paper yet, but I know it will work. I do like that you that you add a pastel ground to yours. Thanks for your comments and subscribing!

This is exactly what I was looking for!! Btw, It’s so nice to find another oil pastel artist. Funny enough, I have been using this Sennelier fixative and hated it; it always left my painting sticky and never sealed my pastels. I realize after watching your video that maybe I just needed to put a dozen more coats on it! My oil pastels are layered and thick and I just couldn’t find a solution. I will try this method, but I have to be honest it in no way shape or form sounds appealing to me to spend this much time sealing my work. Did you have to use this many coats with the other fixatives you were using (Krylon and Grumbacker)? Also, why don’t you just spray your piece while it flat?
@raizes
@raizes 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! When it comes to thick application of Sennelier oil pastel, it takes me 9-10 layers of fixative to get the protection. And it's best to wait 24 hours between a few layers. And it doesn't matter what brand of fix. The sennelier is the best one. I trust it more, and it hasn't ruined a painting yet. The others have... I usually will take my painting outside to fix. Usually there is a breeze, so setting it up on an easel and allowing the wind to push toward the painting. After the 4th layer, then I will lay it flat and apply the fix that way.

Hi, it's nice to see another artists mostly focused on oil pastels, so I just became a subscriber and look forward to watching your other videos! You're much more into experimenting than I, so it's generous of you to share your experiences. If I can make this suggestion, perhaps if there is no urgency, applying the finishing fixative after letting the pastel dry 6-9 months, might reduce the number of needed spray applications? Letting the painting cure/dry for that period of time before spraying, could reduce the cost per painting and it actually might improve the longevity and durability of the piece as well. I mostly stick to using Cry-pass Specialist with touchups of Sen's and Holbein on a canvas paper base but will now venture into trying both your recommended workable and final fixatives. Will also try Paste Mat, since you recommended it as a good base to work on!
@raizes
@raizes 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Leo and thank you so much for your comment. I would agree that waiting 6-9 months would be ideal. I also think just framing behind glass and not using any final fixative is ideal. If the painting were to not be touched for 6-9 months,, then it would need to be wrapped in glassine paper and stored away, so that no dust can settle on the surface. Wouldn't want to apply final fix to 9 month oil pastel painting that has been setting out and "curing" ;collecting dust the whole time. I haven't tried Holbein yet, but I've heard they are great. Love pastelmat. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Thanks for this Rich, I agree with the last comment, finally found the info I wanted. All aspects clear and helpful. So now I can go ahead with oil pastels confidently knowing I won't need glass, especially as I have some on stretched canvas which aren't practical to put behind glass. Please can you tell me more about the cork surface you're using? Is it an art board or something more utilitarian? Did you use gesso? Hope you don't mind the questions. (By the way, for info, I tried cold wax to seal oil pastels on pastelmat. Not ideal as it definitely took some of the life out of the colours and I also didn't really like the even finish.)

Tried leaving a piece to air dry for couple of weeks, then gave it 3 coats-the last being pretty heavy accidentally. Seemed to work well. Was mostly dark Mungyo with a bit of expressionist under and a touch of sennelier on top. Thank you!!

A little note on that Krylon Archival that destroyed your painting: were there Senneliers on the top? This fixative isn't compatible with Senns, but works great with other brands. I haven't used it myself, but I asked oil pastel artist Jack Brumbaugh, he's been using this fixative for years.

Super helpful! I'm new to oil pastels and was surprised how many layers of fixative i needed to "set" my paintings. My patience is lacking so I made new (not-so-thin) layers each 10 minutes. I will try to do lighter coats and wait longer in-between and see if it makes a difference. My question to you is if you've any thoughts about using (acrylic) varnish sprays? E.g. liquitex satin varnish spray. I've seen a handful of tests but I haven't yet found anyone who actively -do it-.

Hi! Personally, I work in oil pastel for reproducible art (eg prints, cards) only. I use MTN matte acrylic varnish; I also have a can of the canvas version, but haven't tried it yet as I'll be waiting for next summer before I spray my canvases. For anything I need to be archival, I use coloured pencil. The biggest advantage of being a two-medium artist is that I can choose which one I use, based on the qualities I need for the job! ☺️

Great video and I subscribed to your Patreon. I wonder how Golden Archival spray varnish would work. It's made in matte, satin, and gloss. Sennelier = sen-NEL-ee-a or SEN-yeh-LEE-a, depending upong French dialect.

Hi Rich, thanks for the video! I wonder about something: how many paintings will one can of Sennelier last (considering you normally use 7 layers and the size is 12x16 or 12x12)?
@raizes
@raizes 3 жыл бұрын
Thats a good question. I'm not really sure how many paintings I can get full coverage with one can of sennelier. I usually go with 12x16 or 12x18, but those are on pastelmat or strathmore artagain paper. When I work on paper I will typically just get enough coverage to be "smudge" proof with the fixative. When I work on board, cork or pastelbord, I might give it more coverage. If I were to try and get full coverage on everything I do, then I would be going through that Fixative quite a bit, and that's expensive.

Hey Rich! Thanks for the info! I gave up after 7 layers on a similar thick painting (so will just try a few more as you did so I can still frame without glass). Also had similar experience with the spotty disaster on a piece of artwork. It was Krylon as well, but turned out to be defective can of spray. Question: What do you do about spraying in winter when it’s too cold to do it outside? (Can’t stand the smell in the house).
@raizes
@raizes 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Peri. I've had some take 15 applications. Really depends on how thick the op is. In winter time I will take the process to my garage. Still cold, but manageable. So I'll lay my painting on a piece of cardboard on the concrete floor and lay down layer of fixative.

I saw another KZfaq artist's video saying to stay away from fixative sprays that have UV protection because it leaves a white haze and ruins your artwork. She says sunblock does the same thing and leaves a white film on your skin and surfaces. She recommends using Krylon Workable Fixative but she was not using pastels. Have you used it on pastels and what is your experience?
@raizes
@raizes 2 жыл бұрын
Hi,. Sorry for late reply. Very late. I don't know why I didn't see this comment earlier. Krylon workable fixative is awesome. I use that quite a bit. On oil pastels, no problem. If I spray on nupastel (hard pastel), it darkens the colors. The UV fixative did leave tiny white specks all over my painting. Never used it again after that.

@@raizes thank you for a reply, I've tried other brands, and thought maybe it was because the sprays were brand specific. I know it was an oldish video, but your painting was beautiful before you sprayed it however, it was really enhanced after you sprayed it, so I think I won't channel my inner mctavish and lash out and get a sennelier spray, they're very expensive here in Australia though, after seeing your painting it'll be worth it. I use sennelier oil pastels and fixative but recently during the hot summer and being very impatient, after spraying my artwork it has remained very sticky and i fear i’ve destroyed it. Do u have any advice on that? It’s been 2 months and i haven’t touched it, its still not dried 😢 If i go over with a fresh spray do u think it will seal it or make it worse?? 🙏
@raizes
@raizes Жыл бұрын
Hello and thank you!. In my experience when it is sticky, I just add more layers until it's not sticky. Sennelier oil pastels are thick and take a lot of fixative to cover. Some of my paintings that have lots of sennelier for top layer can take 12-15 applications of fixative until I get 100% coverage. So I don't think you ruined your painting. Just add more fixative, take your time between each application. Make sure to wait until it dries before adding more.

Hi! Thanks for watching. If not using a fixative, then I would frame behind glass. I have framed before with no glass or fixative, but I take a risk with the surface getting smudged or damaged. It's a delicate medium and takes a long, long time to cure. I can make a video on how to frame behind glass and show some results on that process. Thanks for asking!
