This is what car culture is about. It’s not always big price tags and insane performance or which brand is best. It’s about the relationship between a driver and their vehicle.

When my Dodge pickup was new...Bill was 41 years old...now my Dodge truck is 37 years old!

When I think of old reliable trucks, when trucks were made for their intended use. This is the model, year, and make I picture. I admire you for taking such good care of it. It is something to be proud of.

I grew up on a ranch. I grew up driving fords, Dodge, Chevy and International pickups from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s. They were so simple to maintain and work on. I’m old now. I’m hopeful that I’ll live another 20-30 years. Hope to buy and restore one of the trucks of my youth.

I have had my 1964 Harley-Davidson panhead for 43 years and a 1952 Citroen 2cv for 49 years, a lot of people don't understand why or how anyone can have a vehicle for so long😊

Wow what a great story! I had a 1946 IHC that drove to high school, took my girlfriend on many dates in it. Drove to local college in it also. Sold it when got married and had kids, mortgage etc, miss it all of the time. Thanks for the memories.

Still driving my 1992 Ford Crown Victoria and it still puts in work!. Took it on the highway for over 2 hours the other day. I went to cleaned out my Grandpa's attic. That trunk was PACKED! Had stuff on the backseat too! It didnt break a sweat.

I gave my only son my 1992 Ford it’s been with me for the longest. He is 17 right now and I hope he can pass it on to his son one day

Great video and awesome history on your '46. My love affair with old pickups started in 1972 as a 20 year old college student when I bought a '59 Chev Apache 31 half-ton step-side. I restored it and owned two others afterwards. My last project was a '64 C/10 Chev shortbed fleetside that I bought 25 years ago, and still have it today. Thanks for sharing your great memories!

I have an almost identical story, with a very similar truck! My older brother bought a '39 Plymouth P.U.. Essentially a Dodge with a different tailgate, hubcaps and hood ornament. Pre and post WWII trucks were the same in every way.My brother taught me to shift gears on that truck.eventually my brother sold the truck to our neighbor. When I was 16, I bought it from the neighbor. I also took auto shop and worked on it for many years. I had the truck about 70% redone, including putting in a '46 Dodge motor when I moved to Montana at age 26 (in1980). I owned the truck till about 1988,sold it to a guy who had it finished over the course of a few years. I kept in touch with him till he died around 1995? He wanted to give me the truck prior to his death ,but I couldn't really take it at the time nor would I just take it with all the work he had done on it. Lost track of the P.U. but would love to see it again some day. I drive through Salt Lake City a couple of times a year. Reach out to me, I would love to see Bill.

Very kool story, I've got one too when I was 14 in 1977, I saw a '51 F-1 for sale in the next town over from mine. I knew I had to have that truck! So I asked my dad if he'd help my to buy it! I didn't ask him to buy for me!!! So I worked for a fence Co. After school and on the weekends. So he offered to Co-sign a lone for me if I Qualify! I was ecstatic!!! So I got approved and I could tell he was like damb that son of a buck did it! So he kept his word and I was the Proud owner of a '51 F-1 Ford Truck I paid it off and I drove it in high school, and like you I dated my now Wife in this truck and I still have it and her! All tho I've hotroded it a bit, the wife still rides with me and gives me a blowie in it now n then.......😮

My friend Brian for 55 years has many 1939 to 1947 Dodge trucks and a few Plymouth trucks. He got his first 1940 Dodge 1 ton truck in 1957 when he was 15 years old and only had a learners permit. In 1959 he got a 1940 Dodge 3/4 ton. In 1969 he a 1947 Dodge 5 ton. He started a wrecking yard in1953 when he was just 11 years old and still runs it 5 days a week at 81 years old. He has aquired many more 1939 to 1947 Dodges over the years. His trucks all still have flathead six engines, 6 volt electrical systems. The 1 ton 1940 flatbed has a dump bed on it. The 3/4 ton has all one ton running gear now and is his tow truck for hauling antique cars and trucks. His 5 ton flatbed is used to haul car bodies to a bigger scrap metal yard and originally had a 377 cubic inch flathead engine and now has a 1957 413 cubic inch flathead six with a 5 speed trans, a 3 speed Brownie box secondary transmission and a 2 speed rearend. All his trucks are street legal and used everyday. Go here on KZfaq and type in ( Brians junk yard) , you will see two of his 1940 Dodges, the first ones I talked about. At the start of the video is his 1937 Chevy 1-1/2 ton boom truck he got in 1964 and was in much better shape when I first saw it in 1968. His crane is powered by a Chrysler flathead straight 8 cylinder engine. He likes older machines because he can keep them running himself and he has plenty of spare parts. He has several people work for him over the years, but now it's just him and his wife. I last worked for him in 1980, but we still get on the phone once a month and talk about all the stuff we did years ago. His wrecking yard is in American Canyon California about 10 mile South of Napa.

This is wonderful, at 37 years old I own my families 1978 Chevy c10. not as old as that dodge but was bought new off a lot in 78 and passed down and now I got it. Was the truck with the bench seat that i was brought home from hospital when born in. Now i plan to get it up and running again( simple headgasket 350 small block) and take my 4 year old on a trip. In high school that bench seat sat some pretty girls but the prettiest was the yellow and white bonanza short bed! kudos to the people that love and know the power and history of a old truck! I can relate. My daily driver is a 1959 Chevy one ton panel truck that I got from my dad in April of 1985. My dad bought it in 1971 when I was 5 years old. I grew up with the old truck and learned to drive in it. I've kept my truck stock also. Mine isn't as pretty as yours is, though.

Back in the day ... '50s had one of these on the farm in MN. It was one of those in red and black. Had a lot of fun with it.

When you said “East High” I knew exactly where this story took place. I grew up in West Bountiful and loved working on cars as a kid. My neighbor had a business in his backyard, restoring classic Corvettes and that really got me interested in car projects.

Classic trucks are the best and still climbing in value.

Great story! My first vehicle was a 46 Chevy 1/2 ton named Fred I bought in the early 70s. It was running but had a lot of issues. Straight 6 non syncro 3 sp transmission. Top speed of 45 mph soft brakes loose steering. I owned it for a couple years and sold it for a $100 more than I paid. I would like to have something like it now that I'm retired.

Loved the video. I learned to drive in a 46 Chevy stepside that my dad bought for $50.00. Was multi colored like a Calico cat. I loved the old crank out windshield. I was 7 when he taught me to drive it. He used it to get wood for winter, and wanted me to be able to drive out for help in case he, His words "In case I drop a snag on my head." Lots of good memories. Wish I still had it. When I got married my wife didn't like Fords, and I didn't like Chevys so we bought Dodge. Her baby was a 68 Dodge that was an old Forest Service truck with a 383. The most interesting thing about that truck was they had modified the back bumper and turned it into an air take they could pressure up by hand, and inflate the tires after going out on the dunes. Makes me sad most of my generation doesn’t work on vehicles anymore. It’s such a useful skill. I’m 22 and do all my own mechanical and body work. Why pay someone else if I know how?

I have a 1980 Ford F100 short bed step-side that was given to me by my dad when I started driving. He bought it from the original owner in 1992. It’s rough right now and my wife gets annoyed with it taking up space. I also dated my wife driving that truck. I drove her up a mountain to look at stars lying in the truck bed while we talked and learned more about each other. I’m never getting rid of my truck and I’ll get it cleaned up working right eventually. I aspire to have a story like this when I’m older.
