I watched this movie with a friend. He waited for my family to visit his so we could all watch together. We started, I got bored and started fiddling with my phone, I fell asleep, woke up and it was still going. I said I would finish it, but I’ve never prayed more for a movie to end. I became physically uncomfortable waiting for the end. And afterwards, I was swept up with a feeling of vast amounts of wasted time.

I was genuinely saddened by this film...... I could not be more disappointed if I had son who, after getting his Doctorate and finished his internship, fellowship, and placed first in everything. Then went to work at Wal-Mart as a stock boy. Who slang boxed wine as a side gig. And still lived in my basement. And could not even get a chic that's got 3 kids, over 48 years old with 6 baby daddies and 100 bodies to date him.

I think it’s pretty obvious Lana Wachowski (it’s only the one of ‘em) was just winging it and made an intentionally disappointing, lame and self-sabotaging sequel. It’s pretty much all set up in the first act with the Gen Z (?) idiots discussing the movies etc. For instance, we have the obnoxious white dude saying The Matrix is all about Bullet Time and action and then we get a movie with only lame action scenes that don’t come close to holding a candle to those in the original trilogy.

The fact that your mum and her friends enjoyed this explains a lot to me. My wife has, since meeting me (about 12 years ago) learned to like super hero movies; she already liked SF and fantasy but has never read a comic in her life. But it's only while watching movies together that I've realised she likes them as a normie rather than a fan. She likes things that I hate and hates things that I love - usually endings to long running series. Most people don't watch SF and fantasy the way that we do and only rarely do you get a movie that has broad cross-viewer appeal, such as The Terminator.

Although I never played it, I was interested enough to look up what happened in The Matrix Online, which was the MMORPG which, if I was going to use any game as a continuity source for this, is what I would have used. Morpheus died in MxO; I can't remember how it happened exactly, but there was a long quest arc where people went looking for his body. The humans also built another version of Zion, supposedly even deeper and closer to the core than the one we saw, and the Machines found out about it and interpreted it as a hostile act, which led the Architect (the man who looked like Sigmund Freud in Reloaded) to end the Truce. In other words, there was a perfectly viable, canonical onramp available for a good story in this film. It essentially would have been about the resumption of the war, and the humans having to deal with Morpheus' death. I would not have minded if they had brought Neo back, because they could easily just fudge that his code had been spread out all over the Matrix after he exploded at the end of fighting Smith; and sure it would be complete bullshit, but you couldn't really do another film in this franchise with all three of the principles dead, and of the three, Neo's return could be the most credible, due to the idea of resurrection fitting in with Jesus' mythology, which Neo was meant to be an echo of. I could actually see a really good character arc there, where Neo wakes up in the Matrix after the reboot, and then has to go looking for someone who can tell him what has happened, and reconnect with the rebels etc. If I thought I was remotely capable of it, and if Warner Bros weren't going to either squash me like a bug or just reject it outright, I might even be tempted to try and write a script; or at least enough for a rough pitch. I think I qualified as a definite superfan of the Matrix back in the day, and I feel as though the fandom deserves a lot better than what we got here. Some closure a la Luke's appearance in the Mandalorian in SW terms, at least.

As a writer currently working on a fantasy novel, I found your comment about lore following story not vice versa to be very interesting. There is much ado about worldbuilding and how you must lay the foundation for your story, but the story can dictate the world as well. Quite the chicken-or-egg-first debate. 🤔 I love how much you always give me to think about! 😅

Clearly you weren't alone...However (& LP misses this in his review, bizarrely) it was just stating that the Anomaly (Neo) as the remainder in an equation (unwanted leftovers) should still have behaved predictably. However, The Programmers (the machines) didn't recognise or understand the human capacity or instinct to love. This is why (ergo) Neo was not predictable as an 'anomaly' (the concept of which, 'The One' was known to the machines/programmers/Colonel Sanders as a residual effect within their Matrix as a result of an equation which created a remainder) and his love for Trinity made him act in the ways he did, in all forms and incarnations. That was the purpose of Colonel Sanders' speech and did allude to/ outright tell the audience that "The One" wasn't Neo, but was basically Neo loving Trinity, which screwed up all their plans. Ironically, Revolutions kinda undid a lot of that, by having Neo still act in the way intended, just with different motivations and in his hope, a different outcome.

Initially before this film released... I thought doing a reboot of the in universe matrix through a reboot of THE MATRIX FRANCHISE could have been a GENIUS idea... little did I know how much more dedicated to the Matrix I was as a fan than it's own creator was... it's honestly horrible that they destroyed any future hopes of this franchise because...hatred? Funnily enough... the whole "Triniy being the one" actually had foundations in the original trilogy... when Neo removed the bullet from Trinity & restarts her heart in the 2nd film, they could've VERY EASILY said he transferred some of his power to her through that action!

I went into this movie expecting nothing, and as a result I didn’t hate this movie as much as I thought I would. Did I like it? No. It’s a crappy movie that does none of what made The Matrix remarkable and popular in the first place. My affection for the franchise died as I exited the cinema after the third movie. My feeling was “well, at least it’s over with.” I still love the first Matrix and feel it should have never gotten a sequel. Did I hate this movie? No. It’s not as abysmal, insulting, and mean spirited towards its own series and fans as The Last Jedi, for example. Rather, my reaction was one of indifference stemming from the fact that I hold no great love for anything Matrix apart from the original film.

1:06:00 - It's no wonder that her review is one of the most (relatively) positive that you found, because she's also a sh-t writer who can't keep her story straight, even from one sentence to the next, so she feels a sense of kinship with whoever wrote Resurrections. First she says that internet trolls have stolen the red pill phrase (I'm not sure why it couldn't be considered a reimagining of the phrase... updated for a modern audience), but then in the very next sentence she says this theft was perpetrated by "some of the most dangerous" people in politics. It really says a lot about the fragility of her political views, and the need for complete domination. Despite the fact that 99% of businesses, media outlets, celebrities and public figures will parrot all of her talking points... she's terrified of a few "trolls" meming on a movie that came out a quarter century ago. She also thinks that having no white leaders, and all but one of those leaders being female, shows an interest in "collapsing binaries" rather than simply being an inversion of the binaries she evidently imagines to exist in the real world today. These binaries don't exist, and haven't existed for many decades, which just reinforces the point TLP made earlier in this video... these activists think they're bold, edgy and subversive. They think they're punk. They think they are red pilled, but in our present day reality they're not even blue pilled, which would somewhat let them off the hook for such stupidity... they are the machine.

I'll disagree on two points my solid friend. Firstly that the Matrix isn't complicated, I would have thought with your background you'd be more verse in the book that was researched in detailing the film Simulacra and Simulation. There are so many elements of philosophy and religious subtext in the Matrix that subconsciously even you are told that you have to see it again. As for the Matrix Resurrection I'd be surmised to say it captures these same points and for a fan who wanted to see another hoo-rah at it for me it hit the mark. So that was my second point of disagreement in being obviously it depends what type of fan you are of the originial Matrix to have or lack interest in the sequels. Love and admire your work throughout and good showing as always!! 😎

I think this abomination is a "sequel" to the old PS2 game, a movie-version done very differently. It even could be like this abomination is a simulation inside a game to phase-shift into a movie-phase, a simulation inside the Matrix, like it's own Hollyweird. All the same shenanigans-worldbuilding & gobbledygook-storytelling, but THAT could've kinda explained the different style/tone & strange connectivity as a sequel, even though it's not quite a sequel. To be fair, I like the Anime-mentality, but it's done in such a bad & cheap way, this abomination has no right to even exist. Though a competently done continuation, with, let's say Neo & Trinity as agent-programs, with some old memories, as the machines thank you to the humans, with them both acting as the independent police-force, with humans & machines as equals, fighting a new threat (maybe the alien-invasion from that old comic), would've made sense.

The OG Matrix trilogy was an allegorical tale about an omnipresent control system, but the newest one is quite literally showing you all the different ways which the actual control system limits the world we inhabit. One of the worst crimes of this film, relative to the originals, was the way they completely destroyed The Merovingian, who was _potentially_ one of the most interesting characters to bring forward (it was never going to be Neo or Trinity, for obvious reasons). But...regarding the Wachowskis' politics, the people-jumping-out-of-buildings thing was explicitly explained in the original film - in the woman-in-the-red-dress sequence, Morpheus explains that everybody who isn't unplugged is a threat and their lives are of no consequence relative to the mission. Or, to put it another way, if you're not one of us then your life doesn't matter.

The "sequel trilogy" absolutely killed the OT by making Luke's story MEANINGLESS. I'm really surprised youd say that it didn't kill the OT, but rather, ignored it. They shat on EVERY character from the OT that brought them the fanbase they preyed upon and when Rey stole the Skywalker name, it became clear that not only did the sequels kill the OT, but even worse, appropriated, replaced, and raped the OT to death in a ditch. Fortunately, my determination of what is and isn't canon can NEVER be bought for 4 billion dollars. I don't mean to sound nasty, so please don't read any animosity into this comment. 😄

Sorry, but this is unwatchable. Your videos are often spectacular and being a critic, I’m hoping you can take some because having you describe a hard to describe film when you can’t remember what happened and when is just painful to sit through. I hope you avoid this scattershot approach in the future. You don’t need a full script, just a list of bullet points, just anything to lend some structure to an already messy foundation that is this film.

As soon as i saw the blue haired boy/girl/whatever, i knew it was over. Woke nonsense aside, its an AWFUL movie that was only barely watchable because... nostalgia and Keanu and Carrie trying to do a job worthy of a much better movie. Just another beloved IP sacrified to the perpetually offended cancer that has taken over "entertainment."

Have you watched “tales from the loop” ? Me and my bf were pleasantly surprised at their hopeful messaging combined with the retro-future vibes
