Photography was making me miserable.
Well, the expectations around my photography were. These are the 3 golden rules that I placed upon myself to free me from the misery and become a happier photographer.

Indeed, it really is all about having some fun in the creation process...and how could I not when Otis is so full of joy to be out and about and just keeps me wanting to catch the moment.

Echoes of our conversation in town that night Dave ! Wise words and great rules - I’ve really enjoyed my photography in the last few months and not having to have the self induced pressure of making a film albeit that I really enjoy the process when I do. Really enjoyed listening and watching mate 👍🏻

Forced myself to get out this morning as it goes , been struggling with lack of motivation, time, enthusiasm etc, always saying weather not looking good constantly pitting obstacles in the way. Today , was for me not the greatest images but as you said it's the journey. Sometimes I need to remind myself of that fact , or have someone else remind me, so thanks, hope you're well! Oh and that last image , beautiful !

Thanks mate, yeah getting one foot out the door is the most difficult part for sure, always a compelling reason not to!

I felt the same way for a while, trying to keep the output up to chase the algorithm killed the enjoyment I got out of my photography. I didn't manage to put it so eloquently as you have in this video, but I know where you are coming from. Great video, Dave, and congratulations on hitting 4k subs even if you aren't bothered about them.

First of all, a huge congratulations on passing 4K subs! Wow! Fab video as always mate, great message as usual. But the photos in this one were fantastic starting with the hot air balloon image! "Broke" was wonderful but "Beacon" was my fav, and one of my favs of yours overall. Absolutely fantastic, moody image! "Beginnings" was a nice ending as well. Really great collection mate, but what I think is none of your concern 😂 Hope all is well pal, send me some possible dates to chat when you get a chance!

That hot air ballon shoot was an amazing morning. So misty and I was sure I wasn’t going to get a single shot…. then they started rising above the bank. Looking back that’s one I actually regret not doing a video at, although I do feel it was a better experience for me because I wasn’t. Will drop you a line later this morning

Hi Dave, those stones must have drawn us all there on the same day. We didn't get as far as the tower but will get that next time on a much drier day.

Hey Dave, hope you’re well mate. Taking some time to catch up with content - been away in the camper van for 20 days (I could definitely get to like this retirement malarkey 😊). Great video, with sound advice, especially the comment about what other people think (can’t find the shit photo comment though). While we were away, I ‘forced’ myself down the route of only going out with the R6 and the 24-240mm, without a tripod or anything else, just pure handheld. I had a lot of real fun for the first time in a long time. Haven’t even uploaded the photos onto my MacBook yet, and I can bet there’ll be some proper crap amongst them, but for once I really don’t care. Take care mate.

Hiya mate, missed this comment (plus I've been away myself for a couple weeks), hope you're having a blast. Honestly, the amount of images I have that I've never even looked through - purely for the fun of going out and snapping away, the real heart and soul of photography that is.....not every image needs to be a banger for the world to rejoice in its glory haha

I used to just go out with the camera but seem to stop just taking photos because i never had a reason to. only taking them when making a video, maybe i should start carrying the camera around again more..

I know what you mean, I found that too. When I stopped doing as many vids last year I almost had to relearn just taking photos….and I would still be talking through the shots in my head even without the video camera!

3 nice wee rules ya have there. One question though, does it feel good to create a video and upload it? Back before I took a very long break I used to think that I would love to see a return on all this work I’m putting in but now after the break and more or less starting all over again, I’m back to just enjoying the whole process of it. Likes, Subs, Shares don’t really matter anymore, as you said we have no control over it.

For some time I wasn't enjoying the create and upload part no. Then I got rid of my self-inflicted 'upload schedule' and that started to help change that....then these rules and much better. I'm probs going to do a seperate vid on this subject tbh as I coulda blown up this channel last month had I followed a path (and I got offered a sponsorship too) but I woulda hated doing it so decided not to - gotta love it or it's just badly paid work!

FYI.....The tower on Stanton Moor is the Reform Tower or Earl Grey Tower built to commemorate the man (Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey, Whig prime minister at the time) who helped bring true democracy to the United Kingdom with the 1832 reform act. Useful info in a pub quizz but otherwise rather random.
