Travel credit cards tend to have some incredible signup bonuses to help you pay for your next flight, hotel, rental car, or cruise. For example, I recently applied for the Citi AAdvantage Executive card, which has a welcome offer to earn 100,000 American Airlines miles after spending $10K in the first 3 months. Unfortunately, I received an instant denial, and the Citi reconsideration line also said “no.”
Looking back on my credit card application, I saw a couple areas I should have improved further before hitting that Apply button.
So, MY credit card DENIAL should hopefully help you with YOUR future credit card APPROVAL, if you learn from my mistakes!
I’ll also reveal my credit score, credit inquiries, and more throughout the video to give you an idea of my broader credit situation.
For now, I’m going to focus on avoiding new credit cards in the hopes of cleaning up my credit report a bit. That way, if/when the rumored Citi Strate Elite card launches, I’ll ideally have better approval odds at that time. I’ll also make sure to keep my credit card utilization down while also using my existing Citi credit cards in the weeks leading up to a potential application.

Indeed! I've had the card twice in the past 👍 I tend to pick up the card whenever I'm flying AA frequently, since nowadays that's a requirement to use their club network. In the end I did a product change, so I've got it again!

Another tip, Citi will not approve you if you have 0 balances on your cards, I know this when I got denied the first time for the Custom Cash at the beginning of the year.

Based on my experience, and what I researched, Citi does not like it when your revolving balances are too low. Even non citi accounts apply.

I got it anyway via product change 😁 (MileUp > Executive). I've had the Executive before in past years when I used Admirals Clubs very frequently. I'm a big fan of the AA club network for (a) lack of overcrowding (b) more quiet / business environment (c) relaxing (d) being productive. Historically, they've been awful for food (they're known for cheese cubes and veggie sticks w/ hummus 😂 But now this should be changing as AA is rolling out a new club design w/ elevated food offerings.

Thanks for making this video, great info. I've had 1 citi card open for the last four years. Also I am guilty of minimum spend on it. Few charges every month or 2 to keep it active. Iam curious on the new citi cards mentioned and also watching the Marriott and MGM partnership. See if it's a good time to jump on one of the Marriott cards.

I think the number one issue you’re running into is the recent accounts and inquiries. Citi is very sensitive to those and having more than 0 or 1 of either within the last 6 months is a huge no go for them. I just experienced this myself and am going to wait another month before reapplying so my accounts and inquiries age out a bit

I think you're right. However, I'd disagree on saying even 1 inquiry or recently opened account in the past 6 months is a "huge no go for them." Of the 7 Citi cards I've gotten over the years, a number of them were obtained with higher numbers than that. I've seen data points on both sides, so I cannot say how often or how strictly they enforce this kind of "rule."

I would normally suggest lowering credit limits prior to applying to improve exposure, but lord knows their algorithms are a mystery and it probably wouldn't matter. Not to mention that, unlike Chase, Citi doesn't allow you to simply reallocate credit lines. I'm already preparing for the Strata cards. I've been gardening for a bit. I see people applying for Bilt cards with no bonuses and I'm like "what???" 😅

Sorry this happened Mark. You win a lot. You lose some. Just the name of the game. I have Citi double cash, Custom Cash, Premier and AA Business card. I applied about 6 month to a year apart between those cards. (Because I was busy applying Amex and others) And I put a lot of spend on them, especially the Custom Cash. Never carried a balance but I constantly spend up to the limit each month. (limits are 6k to 20k in those cards) Not only do they send me new card offer letters but they constantly ups my spending limits. So I say put some time in between applications, (Doesn't have to be as long as a year like me but 6 month or so) and put some expenses on their cards. But What Do I know. You have more cards than me! Mark, do a credit union savings secured loan (the higher the amount the better). Pay it down 90% before it starts reporting. You’ll get that 90% back into your savings account to put back on a credit card (if that’s you funded the loan). Then call and ask to setup auto payment for next 24mos. This should eliminate your loan issue. Plenty of videos here on KZfaq explaining the Navy Fed “pledge loan hack”, but it can done at all credit unions

Great Video. Is there an easy way to confirm my utilization prior to applying for a CITI card? Also, if denied do they keep the application open for a few months and you can have it reviewed again, or must you reapply with another hard pull?

1. I left the hard inquiries on my report. I do not encourage people to report them to the bureaus as 'false' simply because they got denied. 2. Didn't affect my score. Didn't affect my credit worthiness. In many cases, I don't really care about inquiries. Did you watch 12:58 in the video?

i have 7 pulls on my Experian report. i have their double cash and custom card which i use All the time. . i applied for the premier card and was approved for $20k. if I did not use their cards on a regular basis I probably would have been the declined

How hard is it to get the custom cash card and would it make more sense to get a different card (lower or higher) up on citi then get the ccc as the second card then after a year + change the first card to a ccc? I don’t think I would ever want more than 2! :) goal would be everyday spending vs my chase ecosystem thx

I don't have a way of knowing exactly how hard / easy it is to get the CCC. If your goal is to maximize everyday spend with up to 2 cards, then the CCC is a fantastic option 🏆

Same thing happened to me mark. Applied last month for citi premier and got instantly denied. Reconsideration line said I have to wait until mailed letter (no email). Then weird denial reasons in the letter and when I call recon line they instantly denied me with no reason or and not even giving any opportunity to change their mind. /'

Same thing happened to me when i applied for a personal elevated offer on the Citi platinum aa card. Tempted to apply for the business version but i doubt they will approve me. When i called the reconsideration they were strict and rude. Basically like did you read the letter? The ketter is the reason have a nice day good bye.

@@MarkReese same as yours. Except what was odd was that their was a different score used. Something like from 1-9900 and I had a 9025 and was denied. 8 inquiries on Experian and 6 new cards in 12 months. Experian score was not listed on the letter but was 747 in the app. I have yet to be approved by a single Citi card. Tried last year with 2 inquires and no new cards in 48 months and still denied for custom cash.

That's relative to your credit limit, and I don't know what Citi would consider to be 'large.' I'd personally want all reported balances at 24% or less.

Shitty Bank is very petty about too many inquiries. If you have more than 6 inquiries in 6 months, you will be denied no matter what your score and credit looks like.

I've seen arguments on both sides, not sure what to believe. In my experience with 7 of their cards, Citi hasn't been that sensitive to inquiries. For others, the opposite seems true. That said, I plan to have a fairly clean 6 months prior to trying again with Citi 😁👍

Many issuers don't put a limit on the # of cards you can have. Rather, they may cap the total amount of credit extended.
