After a little break, it was time to catch the trusty Intercity train to a new destination. While I was told about this city, I certainly didn't expect it to be so scenic and interesting.

James, you have such a positive outlook. It looks like Radom really has some untapped potential! Thanks for showing us these underrated towns. I would never even think about putting Radom on my to-visit list, especially with such a limited vacation time while visiting from the U.S. Also, I love it that you support local businesses. That American-style restaurant looks better than actual American diners here in the States.

Thanks James for being so open-minded. :) Watching You and Marina almost form the beginning. And we Poles can learn this optymistic life style. The big white building with the jubilee instalation in front of it was actually not a library. ;) It's on the different street nearby. That was a part of town hall with the chamber orchestra hall. And Radom has interesting historic view, however last century was mostly industrial city, with lots of huge factories. All of it had been lost in 90'. Go on with discovering vew places. Best regards!

Hi James, if you want to see a non-touristy city, come to Rzeszów. Close to the main train station you can see a Pomnik Czynu Rewolucyjnego (Revolution Deed Memorial), which is, liked or loathed, a symbol of Rzeszów. It's a communist era sculpture (take right as you exit train station, follow Grottgera street, first left into Grunwaldzka street, across the street using the roundabout pedestrian bridge then you will see it on the right). The 'Park Jedności Polonii z Macierzą' is close by. You should also see the '3 Maja' street (pedestrian only, cobblestone), then you can follow 'aleja Lubomiskich' to multimedia fountain. There is a Lubomirski Castle not far away (but it's not currently open to public). Then going back through '3 Maja' then right into 'Jana Matejki' street you can reach the main city square with many pubs and restaurants where you can eat. From there you can explore the area. There is an old style market, like you have probably seen a lot in Ukraine (smaller though), at the corner of 'Targowa' and '8 Marca' streets. But if you come on Sunday - it will be probably closed. On Rejtana street ('Aleja Tadeusza Rejtana') there are many stores and a large mall 'Millenium Hall' you could visit if you have time (it's relatively far from city center).

Białystok may be an interesting choice - it's similar in size to Radom, but is somewhat more populous (~200k vs ~300k). That whole region - Podlasie - also gets it's fair share of memes, partly because of the marginally different version of Polish spoken there ("Gwara białostocka"). The region itself is also worth exploring, it's said to kind of bridge the gap between Eastern and Western influences. It has fairly numerous minority of Orthodox Christians, and even some Tatars.

Polish voivodships and general regions have english names. Mazowieckie Voivodship is an administrative term, Mazowsze (eng. Masovia) is name of this part of Poland. However historically Radom belongs to Małopolska (eng. Lesser Poland). First letter of a plate indicates voievodship of registration. Another letter or two indicates county. For instance: EL - Lodzkie Voivodship, City of Lodz ELW - Lodzkie Voivodship, East Lodz County EP - Lodzkie, City of Piotrkow Trybunalski EPI - Lodzkie, Piotrkow Trybunalski County But: EPJ - Lodzkie, Pajęczno County

Radom was seen by the commies as a model communist industrial city. But the huge revolt in 1976 has shaken this communist utopia to the core. As a method of revenge, the commies stopped every planned investment and improvement to the city, so it deteriorated slowly. 1990s also were a bad time for Radom. Only now with a huge investment in the armaments plant the 'Łucznik' that produces small arms for the Polish Army the city may have it's second chance.

It's good that you spoke up after so many days, something happened, a lot of work? :)

Lauresowe has two good points: 1: just wandering around Warsaw is still interesting (today I learned the park is named after the Royal baths. It is not Bathroom Park. That's reassuring. :-) Last December they had Mandarin ducks there. I saw it in a news article because I was looking for Ducks in Poland. I don't know if they are there normally or they just suddenly appeared? A mandarin duck suddenly appeared in New York. I never did find out how that happened. But Mandarin's are so gorgeous. They were pictures in some news article. In one of them they were busily reproducing. I looked up the park and they have peacocks. I suppose I could see them anywhere on KZfaq. (Or that town in Florida where they are eating the rubber off the cars... The locals weren't thrilled. They may be gone by now) I just didn't have any answers to non-touristy places near Warsaw. Do you know your local mall has an actual bookstore? Probably not too helpful. But we are running out of bookstores in the US. And also malls. 2. It was nice to hear from you again. (I looked on the PKP map and every place I've ever heard of you have either been to, or plan to go to, in the future, or it's just too far away right now. I am almost positive my friend who was born in Poland has not been there since he was 7. And he doesn't have a lot of relatives left. And he once told me he came from a really tiny place. But I don't think I asked him where it was, at the time, Poland was behind the Iron Curtain still. Although I almost got to go there in 85 but then they were overbooked and the following year underbooked and canceled. It was a church festival group. Also back then, we didn't have the internet. All I had was the book Poland, which I read twice, and then I bought it and never read it again. Now it smells like it's been in a box too long. Also it's copyright 1983. Things have probably changed :-) )

BTW, there are nine parks in the city. I think these are the last moments to travel and I recommend Toruń and Bydgoszcz quite close to Warsaw. What do you think about the trip to the south and the two cities of Nowy Sącz and Stary Sącz. I'm afraid that is not possible in one day trip. Quite close is Krynica, that is a well-known health resort. Zamość and Sandomierz are cities worth seeing and I think that's all, because there won't be enough holidays for traveling. :)

Kielce was established in the 11th Century, and there's the possibility that there was a Celtic trading post there.
