In my 'What is Pay to Win' video I made the statement that Dragons Dogma 2 had claimed to be a game without fast travel, and now it is selling fast travel in the shop exclusively.
This was incorrect, the designer claimed fast travel was only needed if the overworld travel in the game was boring, and the majority of the items in the shop are achievable in game.
In this video we will go over every DD2 microtransaction item and see what they do, to clear up the confusion.

In a previous video I made an incorrect claim about the fast travel system in the game Dragon's Dogma 2. This video is an acknowledgement and apology for that incorrect information and a more thorough look at what is actually in the cash shop. Many of you called me out on the mistake, thank you for holding me to a high standard as a content creator, but a few of the more extreme personal messages could probably be toned down a bit.

really appreciate you being upfront about this. i was curious after seeing the overwhelmingly negative reviews on the steam page and did a little digging myself. the majority of users upset with the game seemed to think that integral game mechanics were being locked behind paywalls, while a small minority of users pointing out that this wasn't true were being hidden through downvotes n stuff. the fact that you didn't catch it is at least somewhat understandable, as it took me an hour or two of research to really get to the bottom of things. nbd josh, thanks for being a good dude. (i still think day-one mtx in an unfinished single player game is shitty and unethical, but that's not exactly equivalent)

Microtransactions will never go away and are only going to get worse in the future. This is because we gave corporations an inch and they took the entire mile. Zero tolerance for mtx is the only cure.

"try your best to not put your love of a game before your care of a person" was a great thing to say and more people really need to listen to this advice not just for gaming, but for a lot of things. Also, the fact that you even put out a video saying that you were wrong shows that you have more integrity than most content creators.

It isn't love for a game...the game has been out for 1 day. Nobody "loves" or has loyalty to this game. Wat they do have are petulant, immature, impulsive thoughts...they have become accustomed to trolling to hating in private, not having to confront anybody in person or be held accountable themselves for their vitriol. Gamers by nature are impulsive, petulant, and dopamine driven. They are not apt to deep thought or long meditation. Of course JSH has tied himself on purpose to this petulant and impulsive crowd, that inevitably gets younger as its older members level up to things like parenthood and adulthood.

Well the claim does have some massive red flags. Money gating Fast Travel as a whole is definitely a bad look if true, which it isn't in DD2. People just want others to still give Dragons Dogma 2 a chance since the core game is quite good (as long it's to your taste of course). A shame tho that it's terrible PC launch performance and Capcoms terrible monetization is tying it down. I like Josh and understand his mistake. DD2 2-step fast travel style is definitely an uncommon type. Edit: I fixed my wording a bit to better make my point and stance. With the previous wording, some got my viewpoint twisted.

@@sinfulbluez1634 Its not bad monetization this is not a in game shop. These are the rewards for the deluxe version. Capcom is letting you buy any of the rewards you can get in the deluxe version without forcing you to buy the whole bundle. This is a pro consumer choice. Hey do you like the tent offered in the deluxe version but don't care for the consumables you can easily find in game here it is just buy the tent. No need to pay premium for the whole deluxe version just buy the standard game. Somehow this got twisted into Capcom is selling in game currency and save slots for money.

@@steel5897 Thanks for the new word, but I really don't see how this is diminution. Echoing a falsity about fast travel in a video game does not deserve the amount of vitriol he received. Not all misinformation is the same. Pushing false information about certain microtransactions available in a $70 single player game is not on the same level as spreading misinformation about vaccines or climate change for example, which - judging by some of these comments - you'd expect him to have declared 5G is causing covid or something. You claim diminution from people defending him, I claim overreaction from people like you and the angry commentors declaring him unfit to report on video games ever again.

The irony of the dramatic responses you have received is that another point you made in that video covers this perfectly. These purchases in games are such a slippery slope and have become normalized so much that we have begun to argue the semantics of something being not that bad or overly predatory in nature rather than arguing pay to win/progress at all.

@@MenrvaS Even if they're all obtainable in game or just QoL increases, in game purchases inherently make your content worse for not buying it. If they felt the need to add them, then they're saying it's a helpful feature or useful to have earlier and they're making the choice that you have to pay extra for it rather than making the game better by making it baseline.

@@Zillionman2010 The game already made the baseline into the standard game, and the deluxe edition is the luxury option with a bit head start. If you want to support them more, you get a bit of help or minor special items in return. If not, you can just enjoy the base game. This is not a live service game. It will not going to make your experience any worse than knowing nothing about the game. And if by worse you mean 2kg less camping kit, you can have 3 pack mules. Weight is never an issue to begin with.

He plays it... Well? Well, I on the other hand don't really like the character he plays, even if it has been honey for some. Still I keep glancing up at this direction to see if there is really going on anything. There are not so many serious news channels out there, and some of them are tangled up in bs, KZfaq and non-youtube ones. I know that if he feels like it he can push out content that is not by the mold of the character he plays, and that flexibility is the only thing I can give thumbs up for, and trying to be there when happens, or fits for the image of the channel. If it's for the latter then I probably don't have much connection. Yeah well I'm starting to repeat myself, but I think it's still chill channel.

Maybe he shouldn't yap about things he doesn't even do even BASIC RESEARCH ON. What a clown. No one should trust his content after seeing how well he verifies information before spreading it to tens of thousands of people. It takes all of 2 to 3 minutes to research this properly and find out the truth of the MTX situation, yes even right at launch. This video doesn't change that. The fact he has had to do this repeatedly many times shows he DOES NOT LEARN. He would rather get the views and clicks than do a proper job of things, that shows a LACK of integrity. Just as an additional point, this video has 217k views while his first one has 154k views. So if he's trying to get away with a bad apology and hide it in a less viewed video. he's failing miserably. If, on the other hand, he's actually being an adult and admitting when he's wrong to his audience and asking for forgiveness, he's doing it right. I think it's apparent which of the situations this is. If you want to go on a vendetta and scream because a youtuber accidentally insulted your favorite game and you had to take your mouth off Capcom's dick in order to fanboy defend them, go ahead lmao. Also, he could have used DD2 way more in his video, so the fact that it was just a line thrown in at the last minute, means it's sad to see it happen, but easier to accept. Seen people parrot the P-2-W and fast travel angle so hard, as to conclude in their own head, that you also had to pay irl money, just to switch vocations, without a lick of proof.

The game throws more than enough wakestones & ferrystones at you and if you still need more, run Pilfer on a thief :) Capcom's MTX are only ever for the laziest of whales who don't even want to play the games they buy. It's weird, but it's not gamebreaking.

The limit on characters is another thing thats MEH. All those things by themselves would not be that much of an issue, but together they compound.

Play the first game. You'd see why. You gain nothing by making another character. Your one character can already be every vocation with the swap of a weapon/gear. This is a straight improvement over ddA where not having good stats when going from warrior -> sorc -> sorc -> archer...made it hard to play anything besides 1 or 2 vocations with your character. I just don't see why its an issue. The people who have never played DDO would see why its an issue. These people weren't going to buy the game anyway, so nothing is lost. @@Raz0rking

Still dumb to limit people, especially as games get replayed all the time, and no one would want to delete their previous character to do so. (ignore this, left for history) If it's pointless to have another character, why lock it behind a purchase in the first place? Why charge someone at all? That's both a waste of developer time and player good faith to add pointless MTX to a game. It's a single player game for fuck's sake. May as well charge someone every time they boot up the damn game.

I got called a liar for saying that I couldn't restart or make a new character, people pointed out I could dig I to the files and delete my save game to restart. Seeing as how I have never had to do that in any game I have ever played, and there was no way to do so from the in game menu, I stood my ground. But even me, a nobody, received dozens of comments calling me all sorts of names. 😢 People can be cruel when defending the multi billion dollar company they adore.

The best move would be to do his research in the first place, however. There is a misinformation campaign going on to trash the game, the fact that Josh fell for it is a hit to his credibility. Apologizing only salvages part of that lost credibility, not all of it. Failing to do your research when covering a major news story is rough.

Most creators wouldn't have even bothered addressing their mistake. Some creators would have put a pinned comment on the video addressing their mistake. Very few creators would have made a video going into depth addressing their mistake and how it happened. Thank you for going to this much effort to do the right thing.

Josh once revealed the statistics of his viewers, and the vast majority I believe were mid 20s - mid 30s. I would add: Explorers camping set is nice to have, but there are other lighter camping sets available and this is not worth your money. Heartfelt pendant is pointless as most npc like flowers and all npc LOVE wyrncrystals that drop from dragon/drakes 15-60 at a time and it only takes 2 to cap an npc's affection, which is also nearly pointless regardless. Harpy lures are for mobility not combat, you use a lure and then grab a harpy as it lands to fly. These are very useful on classes without the mobility to reach high places, but you do not need them in any capacity. Even though I had them the whole game for 40 hours, I used them once and it didnt help me lol. Art of metamorphosis is also nigh useless as you can buy them in the main city and barbers scattered across the world will change you or your pawns appearance for gold in game. Gaol keys are completely useless they are one time use, you can buy them from vendors at the start of the game, AND the one you receive in main story has unlimited uses (make a copy of and never need gaol keys again). Wakestones can be useful for reviving dead towns people, but they are plentiful and you dont need them for yourself the game autosaves before and after every encounter. Rift crystals primary use is to rent pawns that are a higher level than you, and buy cosmetics. these are earned passively by doing nothing AND Nexusmods exists DO NOT BUY THIS. Portcrystal is the only actual valid P2W item here AND you can only buy 1 of them. dont buy it Nexusmods exists, and there are multiple fast travel solutions there if you really cant be bothered to enjoy traversing the world and using ox carts. That said, mtx in a 70$ game is retarded no matter how little they affect the game.

The way Josh corrects himself and makes a new video with the correct information is honestly the minimum acceptable, more people should be like that. whether p2w or not, it's garbage practice of having mtx in a single player game. in australia, the standard version of dd2 is $107.96aud (that's already a lot), from what i can tell this only includes the base game, no extra guaranteed future dlc, no free giga updates or anything, just the game, then the mtx range from $1.50 to $7.50, that is absurd. $108 plus nickel and diming me on mtx in a single player game is unacceptable IMO

Can't play DD2 myself yet, but what differentiates the Riftshop of DD2 from the one in DD1? In DD1 it was an ingame store that mainly sold Pawn related items, with your main Riftshard income being having your pawn be used by other players (whenever someone released your pawn after use they were updated with your next rest, increasing their experience (no EP but AI Experience in how quests work/enemy weakpoints ect) and bringing along a riftstone reward according to their usage and at times items gifted by the other player. You could also get some minor Riftstone rewards for quests or as monsterdrops They later introduced the option to buy Riftstones for real money in the form of DLC where you got Quests to search specific locations to get them. Is it the same here just with having the buyoption from the getgo or what change made it so bad specificly?

When MTX is put in, it is usually because the developers deliberately created a problem or inconvenience for the MTX to look attractive enough to solve. Now, without confirmation from the developers it cannot be definitively said the MTX in DD2 is like the MTX in 99% of games with MTX existing to encourage players to spend money on an experience that was deliberately made worse to encourage purchase of MTX, but it would be foolish to think DD2 is an exception.

It can be a good thing if this pleases the corpos, while not having a big effect on the gameplay. If its easy to farm those rift shards or whatever, then I dont have an issue. If its a pain in the ass, then the shop is scummy as fuck.

Only Capcom have been doing these types of post-launch revenue for nearly a decade, they have a pretty good idea as to where the line is and how not to cross it. Also, Capcom just recently announced pay standard increases while most other companies were laying people off. Maybe Capcom has earned the leeway until they go full-on Shadow of War.

The thing is, you can't have it both ways. If these items are so worthless to not be worth complaining about, then their purpose for existing is to trick uninformed players into buying useless items. That is the best case scenario.

It's not so much a "trick" as simply that some people WANT to pay to NOT PLAY a game. I don't know why. Same reason people will use hacks or cheats.
