I forgot my EVF on a recent vacation and was forced to use the Leica Rangefinder for AF - I was pleasantly surprised with the results...

The patch is very accurate. The visoflex is not needed. one can focus with the patch and then use the rear screen to compose the shot for the wide angle lenses.

We agree on this - my eyesight isn't what it used to be and focussing on close details with the back screen has been a bit of challenge for me. Fortunately with wide angle lenses, the depth of field is so great, that even if you're off by a bit, the resulting shot is still very sharp.

With something like the 10mm, I wouldn't even focus. Just set it to infinity, stop down to f4 or higher if the light will let you and everything from your nose to the stars will be in focus. I used to do this with both my CV15mm and on my Hasselblad SWC (which one day you should try because I think it would blow your mind) and always had sharp photos. With other lenses except as you say the very fast ones if you shoot wide open, the rangefinder patch is essential. From rather gloomy north-west London.

I have D850 and z6II as my main cameras for work. I also have gfx 50s, Pentax 645d, Sony Rx1r...and with all these cameras in my bags I bought a Leica M8. All these new hightech bodies are not even near to touch your soul in a way that the M8 does. Stellar IQ from the Kodak ccd. And as you say, rangefinder focusing is really great.

Leica is a legend. Sometimes you shouldn't meet your heroes. But this time it worked out better than you expected. Maybe one day I will also tempt the fates! 😂

The range finder is AMAZING, you just didn’t know how to utilize it, Seoul forced you to learn and now you see the light, AWESOME. I shoot with an M6 and it is just a most beautiful experience. Glad you are now happy with your Leica. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Ken is a hypocrite. He was dissing mirrorless as a gimmick, then went all in selling his Nikon kit 😂

Well, in his defense, when the technology was new - mirrorless - it had many flaws, most of which have now been solved. Sony is exhibit A, the A7IV is a remarkable camera... He used to diss on Sony non-stop, but he's been pretty quiet lately and has definitely moved on from photography so it seems...

I bought a Leica M7 and MP both cameras are mechanical marvels. Add some summicron lenses 28, 35 & 50mm are excellent. I next have my eyes on the Leica SL2 and adapt some M lenses. Anyway look forward to what to now aquire for Leica kit. 🎉

Interesting, did the rangefinder focusing work best with a specific focal length lens?

35, 50 and 75 - seemed to be spot on, I've read a few comments about the Zeiss 50 f/1.5 having a focus shift with the Leica M mount, but I didn't really experience it...

As analog instruments they can get knocked or fall out of calibration. Zero issues with my 5+ year-old base M10, though.

The more I use the Leica, the more I respect the fact that they've stuck to their guns and stayed in their lane - it obviously works for them.

My work/life balance got way out of whack and the channel was one of the sacrifices/casualties... I still live and work in photography nearly every day, I just don't have the kind of time I need to make videos like I used to.

Hahaha, you don't really expect Darren to answer that knowing how incendiary Ken is when it comes to criticism. TBH, I'm glad he's left the photography world and headed off down another one of his vitriolic echo-chamber rabbit holes, leaving the rest of us to appreciate photography because I have never seen a good photo taken by Ken. And I'm not sure if anyone ever has!

The price is redic and they do all these stupid limited editions. If they were 1/3 the price I might try it.

Agreed - but inexplicably, they sell out of the those special additions nearly as soon as they're announced. Try the 240, still crazy capable and, uh, reasonable - by Leica standards anyway :-)
