Trolls 3: Band Together has just released in the US, but over here in the UK, we've had it for weeks! And though I could have easily come out and seen this film earlier, I didn't. For some reason, it didn't really compel me. But now I'm here last minute to give you a preview of what's to come. Is the third instalment just as TERRIBLE as the first two movies, or has DreamWorks improved the formula a little bit with experience? Hottake: Trolls actually has good ideas. Like a vibrant music themed world sounds amazing and the world buildings and lore is. Its just that the writing is not good. They dont know where to take their characters or stories, so we just end up with half-baked plots and a lot of randomly thrown together ideas.

Well, she was a minor villain in try to stop the team from leaving. Some exec asked for redemption arc, and he got it with poppy's sister, cause she was sorry and made it up for the trouble she caused earlier.

@@jesenjin8467 I think that makes her more of an antagonist than a villain. Because an antagonist can come together to work with the protagonist in the end, or change their ways as opposed to the overall villain wear their motives are no good, and they directly opposed the character.

Ngl maybe it's just me, but i LOVED the villians this movie, they're genuinely hilarious to me. Just people who are evil without a super tragic backstory can def be compelling if done right!! They have beautiful voices and aren't over the top malicious, but still fuck up and their consequences catch up to them. They present the teen sibling dynamic hella well imo, so I personally love them :)

Loved that Velvet didnt get a redemption arc and she was just evil even if she got everything she wanted as a child. Veneer had a redemption arc sorta, but he still helped his sister with torturing the trolls and got arrested either way. Also loved how they didnt forget or just completely erased he was a bad guy. Jail it is!

Velvet and Veneer are written with the vocabulary and mannerisms of real teenagers and I think that makes them appealing to a teenage audience, which might be why he doesn't understand their characters.

Same, DreamWorks isn't stupid, the writing is all over the place on purpose. It's not necessarily poor writing, it's different writing, and sometimes the criticism is a bit frustrating in that sense, even if they're valid points they've made. And this is coming from someone who absolutely devours "well" (under normal standards) written movies, writing, and just content in general. Trolls is just different, and it sucks that people don't see that. Idk, I just am really fond of the trolls movies. All of them. I love them, and that's not just nostalgia talking.

@@Fandom_Gremlin Personally, I don't really like the first movie. It's fun at first for a little but later on the whole movie is just so boring for me. I haven't seen the second one, but the third one is actually a good movie. I don't care what people say, this 3rd Trolls movie is not bad at all, it's actually decent, not as great as Puss In Boots the Last Wish, but decent. I just don't really get the hate for Trolls 3. Trolls 1 however, in my opinion, is a really boring movie. Like in my opinion they don't do anything interesting with it. I forgot the name of the big ugly troll people but I liked how they were presented at the beginning, later though the movie became so boring for me that I really didn't care about it or the characters. The second from what I've heard was worse but idk. And the third is decent movie. The songs are decent choices and overall the villains were so entertaining. I did read all that, and I appreciate how you made it clear that it was just your opinion, which is something I've never been against, it's simply about people blatantly hating on it and critiquing it on the wrong merits. I do understand the sentiment of the first being boring (though, not personally, if only because I myself liked the story, despite it's cliche-ness), I can see where someone might come to those terms or that opinion. Trolls isn't for everyone, Trolls World Tour was paced very oddly (so I don't blame others for thinking it as the worst), and absolutely Trolls Band Together is an actual decent movie (plot and standard 'good writing' wise). I agree with you, mostly. Valid opinions and a good head on your shoulders!

here are some things i personally liked about the movie 1. made fun of stereotypical boy band song titles at the start, made me laugh 2. the art style. especially during the "hustle" part, it just looks really creative and fun 3. i liked the villains for some reason. they were fun to watch its not a horrible or awful movie by any means, but im not exactly the right age for it either so it gets a 6/10 from me

As for the rest, well, I didn't watch the first two because I thought I was too old for them, and this doesn't seem to have changed too much from what made me think that. It didn't need to exist, and the only good thing about this franchise are the Terrible series videos Dazz makes. He really bit the bullet for us on this.

There was a twist that could have semi worked (still a bad in though) is poppy having a twin herself. But not only does that not make sense since we see poppy as a new born in the first movie, it’s spoiled in the trailers! Edit: my mistake for calling them twins 💀. And saying he abandoned her. What's really sad of these movies is that they have some actually pretty funny jokes here and there as well as nice animation, which prove that if the writers actually cared for putting out an actually decent product, e would have gotten a GOOD Trolls movie Or at least serviceavle Trolls movie.

They have good animators and set designers, weird toy licence, and bosses that want music they like and want to show to their kids, possibly. As you see, the puzzle doesn't really fit. What should they make it about? Where I live kids are given these trolls when at the dentist, so I have no desire to watch them from that alone. Do they even have lore? We know that they can make something deeper with what we've seen Dreamworks make before, but they can't with what they're given. The songs do not really tie into the story especially when they are all over the place. So yeah... They could have been good, if they were given soul.

I agree, but I will say that Illumination movies also have good animation. In movies like that, the animation is made to be really smooth and brightly colored and clean looking to appeal to mass amounts of people, and especially children. Sometimes good animation isn’t an indicator of the quality of the movie, but other times it is.

Fun fact: Disney's "Sleeping Beauty" is also a jukebox musical. The songs were from Tchaikovsky's ballet. Disney basically just added lyrics to them.

I actually like the first one for some of the songs and the second one for a few moments. Trolls has some good moments but it’s overall a very skippable movie franchise.

The producers just create new characters, make them related to Poppy and Branch ok but i have a few questions. 1; If Poppy had a sister all this time, why her father never talked about her? Why we only saw Poppy in the first movie and not the other girl? Branch made a group before or after his grandma dies? If it's before, it could make sense! Maybe he got in a fight with them, run away and decide to live with her 🤔 I hope there's an explanation in the movie because if it's just '' Shup up, they exist! '' that's lame! As Deadpool would say in his second movie '' That's just lazy writing! ''

Dad explains the sister thing in few sentances - forgot at what point of story. And for boy band it was explained in first 5 minutes of movies. As everyone was leaving Branch, last troll leaving said to Branch to look after granny... and litetally no brother asked Branch what happened to her... (as far as I remember the movie). And even if the perceived plot holes were filled... they were filled with lazy or fast rewrite

1. That’s explained in the movie. Viva was blocked out from the escape with a few of other Trolls, they escaped and found an abandoned mini golf park and lived there from then on. They became defensive and reclusive, just like Branch was during the first Trolls. 2. Kismet was mostly a fanservicey moment, but I believe he joined that group after Brozone disbanded and during their capture by the Bergens. We are shown plenty of times that Trolls lived slightly normal lives on the tree, at least until Trollstice came and one (or many) got selected to be eaten. It’s also mentioned that Branch was the one that wrote Better Place, so he may just have been the lyricist and not actively performed with them until the end of Band Together. So yeah, the movie has a continuous lore that makes sense if you pay attention and leave your assumptions at home. It’s not deep or angsty, but it’s there and is good, and people like it, MANY like it, young and old.

Holy crap, I had a similar "went to a nearly empty theatre" experience once too! Granted mine was a good two weeks after the movie first aired, but still. It was Men In Black III, and the only people in the audience were me and my friend, and this one random middle-aged guy a few aisles ahead of us. When the movie ended he threw up his hands and yelled "WOOOOOO YEAHHHH!!!" and started applauding. I think that alone made me appreciate that movie a lot more than I otherwise would have hahaha

It's just the quintessential movie that was written by a committee to make some money and has zero imagination, intelligence, creativity, or inspiration behind it. It's like the null value of film, where you can't call it good OR bad but rather just say "it is a film that exists". Imagine taking a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese and eating just the dry noodles. Yes it's food, but it's "food": it won't kill you, but it has no flavor, no nutrition, and no appeal. I think it’s safe to say that Dreamworks is not in the middle of a renaissance, it was a streak of 2 movies, & that was it, I feel like the renaissance lasted from the Prince of Egypt until Sinbad Legend of the 7 Seas, that makes 4 years of renaissance material, & some people might not even agree with me, some people dislike chicken run, some people dislike Spirit stallion of the cinnamon, some people even dislike Shrek, that is okay, but it means that Dreamworks basically never had a renaissance, it makes stuff that’s sometimes good, sometimes bad, & sometimes mediocre.

I really enjoyed the final chase scene as well. It's a shame the studio version doesn't contain Sweet Dreams Are Made Of This. Before I saw it, I assumed her sister would've fled early with the mum along with some other trolls. The King then assumes that they were taken by the Bergens and eaten, and just never wanted to think about them. That would've fit with the original movie. Mostly.

Maybe there used to be a couple trees and then by the first movie, there was only one left. So when they disbanded they also snuck out of the tunnels before they were finished or something.

I swore to myself I’d never watch this movie but my parents asked if I’d like to go see it… I’m in the later half of my teens and I said no, but they were gonna go anyway without me and I’d rather go out and spend time with them than stay home all day so I thought why not? Yknow what? I actually enjoyed it 😂 it wasn’t the worst. I superliked the animations too so that was nice. No regrets 🤷‍♀️

I honestly thought it was gonna be terrible and annoying but the only thing i liked about the movie was the soundtracks, the music mashups and stuff were actually really good and catchy to listen too. Literally the first time i saw the new villians i thought that they were gonna be a flop but it turns out it was actually well done, the car chase scene was really good...well that's my opinion though. This was definitely better than the second movie which i really dislike but this was actually kinda fresh and different from the other 2 movies aswell.

I didn't feel there was enough time spent on Viva's trauma, the resolution of it, or Branch's valid feelings of "my family isn't a good thing just by the sheer fact of being family". I was hoping for some "Encanto" level of confrontation regarding the family members' need to realize they are all at fault and need to work on it. I realize Dreamworks isn't Disney, but that seemed like it was the logical course the plot would take.

I mean "Encanto" also didn't do a wonderful job at the generational trauma stuff either. Bruno's overlooked trauma and Abuela getting a free pass at emotional abuse because she went through some stuff wasn't a well-thought out way at generational trauma either. They both sort of rushed that theme.

Also, I don't think the romantic type of love is special, and I think that the romantic type of love isn't real. I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other, while most platonic best friends remain friends until death. I think that having a platonic best friend is a lot better than having a romantic partner or spouse is. Having someone who's like a sibling to you is a lot better than having a romantic partner or spouse. Also, you are more likely to be much more closer to someone who's like a brother or sister to you than you would be with a romantic partner or spouse. People tend to fight with their partner or spouse a lot more than they do with a platonic best friend, and you never fight with your best friend the way you fight with your partner or spouse. Partners and spouses are just temporary. If you break up or divorce them, it's hard to go back to them. With your platonic best friend, you're going to make things work, because they are your best friend, they are your go to partner. It's always easier to make amends with them than it is with a romantic partner or spouse. Romantic relationships are pointless, while platonic relationships are not.

Haters gonna hate I guess. I loved this movie and thought it fun. This was honestly the best one out of the 3. It's just pure chaos of self aware used up tropes and cliches. Some people won't understand it, others will. The villains were awesome, slay 💅 The fact that there seems to be no logic to the plots is what I love! In the next one I want to see a villain voiced by Lin Manuel Miranda with his cult of evil teathre kids turning others into musical zombies. His goal? Playing the lead role in the world's biggest musical that he's brainwashed everyone into participating in. FOREVER! It would be a kinda meta "musical in a musical" type of thing.

This is EXACTLY what I've been saying. Why does everything have to be logical? Especially considering this is a fictional universe made up to entertain kids (and maybe young teens). Even then, though, sometimes watching something so all over the place, plot wise, can still be insanely fun. The self awareness of being such a cliche movie also lends itself to be enjoyable, especially if you want some mindless entertainment. Idk, it's like they don't understand that and rate it based purely on "good logical" writing, rather than on how this might be fun for a large majority to just watch and enjoy. I've always been a huge fan of Trolls, and that's coming from someone who rather enjoys well thought out content and material that has Intricate plot details. Sometimes it's just fun to let go of that. Hell, sometimes it's fun to pick out the inconsistencies in the Trolls franchise and laugh at it!

Couldn't put it better myself. They are targetted to make the audience laugh and have fun (and they get the job done). The animation and the sense of humor (such as the adult jokes) also make it a blast to see.

Nobody in my theater too. I had fun but I saw it with 4D seats. I even laughed at the "out of your network" insurance joke. I was aware when boyband references were made, but I feel like I would have enjoyed more if I liked boybands. There was a message about not being perfect but being together and it not being right for someone to try to change you. It was outright said by Branch and Floyd. I've noticed media literacy decline year by year. Good vibes, great art, not a masterpiece like Last wish but fun enough for me to take some of my kid relatives.

Whoa so turns out i had the unpopular opinion of the CENTURY. I went and saw it and almost cried. I loved the villians and the takes on covers. I like the fact that everyone except fir the burgans are old 90's toys (trolls, squish and stretch, actual puppets). I understand why people may not like it, it was all over the place at times and some story beats where predictable but genuinely believed that it was written like this on purpose. When I saw that Poppy was also going to have a sister in this movie, I thought it was going to be some kind of cheat or there was going to be a twist at the end. Because in the first place it doesn't make any kind of sense and secondly, it seemed very strange to me that they made that "big" reveal in the trailers. But oh well... What can I expect from "singing killed my grandma"

Trolls is now officially my guilty pleasure lmao. I watched this movie recently with one of my friends because I was bored and had nothing else to do on a Saturday. I didn’t care to watch the first two, since I thought I was too old at 12 and 16 to watch them. But I watched this one anyways. And… I loved it! The music is really good, I’ve had Perfect and Better Place stuck in my head all day! Yes, some ideas are wacky and random. But I just remember it’s a kids movie and I move on, it doesn’t have to be that deep. I loved the villains, they were wacky and hilarious! And I agree, the finale reminded me of Shrek 2, which is my favorite Dreamworks movie to date! I’d give it a solid 8.5/10! It did so many things right with minor flaws! I even rewatched the first two Trolls and didn’t hate them as much as other people. They’re great, flaws and all

The villains were literally the best part of the movie, idk what you're on. Also, their song was such a bop and their personalities were fire. But, their designs seem to be based on these old 90s to early 2000s toys like Betty spaghetty or Polly pockets. Based on the fact this movie was made to sell toys, I can guarantee that toys will be made of these characters. Which is cool because I think they're great but bad because they will be 100% plastic, which is horrid for the environment considering how much I remember everyone losing these plastic toys clothing because it was small and easy to lose.

I watched this with my nephews and I think I enjoyed it more than they did! The villains work for the narrative and NGL are hilariously petty - the fact that Amy Schumer plays Velvet feels even more hilarious with how she steals jokes 😂

In my opinion, this wasn't a bad movie, nor did I regret seeing it in theaters. Granted I do have issues with the pacing. The film had a lot of plot holes and I didn't really emotionally connect with the new additions. Some jokes felt a little forced but I never had any "ugh this is so dumb" moments. I couldn't help but laugh at the ongoing ring pop marijuana bit. It's a trolls movie, I didn't expect it to be amazing. It was just a fun flick that I couldn't help but laugh and smile at. That's all I really needed. I'm gonna be singing "Better Place" for a while. Definitely worth NYSYNC getting back together for😍.

I had to go to the movie theater to watch it because my little sisters LOVE trolls, and I thought that it was actually decent! So good work dream works for making a movie no one wanted but made it decent! And I absolutely did NOT expect that sexual joke about being tied up.

I’m gonna laugh harder at this review because, somehow, this man went to a “empty cinema” to watch this movie, all while being currently the highest grossing movie of the uk. I’m not a mom nor a father, I just love animated movies and I’m very fond of Trolls simple yet charming nature, so I went and watched it, I had a great time, I was invested in the characters, I loved the new textures and use of mix media in the film, overall a really good time and I’d be delighted if a 4th sequel comes out some day, because there are many tids and bit that can be further explored. Stay mad folks, not everything need to cater to you to be good, as much as it hurts you to hear it.

I honestly think this movie was adorable! My uncle's not even a Trolls fan and he thought so too. These movies are meant for the families with kids, and the neurodivergent young adults who love animated movies with characters they can relate to and sympathize with. These movies are not always meant for movie critics. DreamWorks in general has me really loving their Trolls franchise. Kung Fu Panda and Trolls movies are amazing, and it's a shame that they let Netflix take over for Chicken Run 2 because I feel like they'd be good with that if Sam Fell wasn't ruining it. The Croods sequel was also incredible and way better than the first one. I feel like Trolls 3 might not have been as good as the other few Trolls movies, but it was a lot of fun and creative, and just a cutesy patootsie movie that you can enjoy with your siblings or cousins! It wasn't even as dark as the first movie, and they added funny new characters! The villain designs were a bit weird looking to me but they were the funniest villains I seen in a DreamWorks movie! I'm also not hating on Wish entirely, but this is another DreamWorks movie that deserved to beat Disney!
