Pixar may be one of the greatest in the industry.. but everyone flops somewhere. And The Good Dinosaur is unanimously seen as the worst Pixar movie of the bunch. It's boring, unimaginative, cliched, and very very unmemorable. In fact, I DON'T remember it from when I watched it years ago. So what went wrong? Why is it so bad? And why did they make the choices they made? Come join me as we find our in our last video of 2021 - Pixar's TERRIBLE The Good Dinosaur...

…What a surprise. It's like, the emotional moments ARE there but... everything else is so cliche ridden and overly realistic that this doesn't feel like a full project. It is literally like some tech demo by Pixar, through and through.

@amiaswolfgang
@amiaswolfgang 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. We all know that Wall-E is as powerful as it is because of the extremely limited dialogue, we know they can do it right because they've done it before. A concept like that could have really improved the film overall. That or just a better script in regards to the dialogue. Most of Arlo's dialogue really feels like the first draft of what someone should be writing, dialogue that feels good written on paper but not great spoken. It's like they wrote the outline of the dialogue and didn't attempt to flesh things out beyond that, at least when compared to how I write dialogue. It's not easy to be able to write in ways that sound naturally verbally, but again we know Pixar is very very good at this, so I guess we'll all be left wondering why they fell so flat here. Hopefully there's some parallel universe out there where The Good Dinosaur is one of Pixar's greatest of the 2010s if not at the top of its catalogue, just sad that that universe isn't this one.

when i was younger, my mom and i went to watch this movie in the cinema and when she went to buy the tickets, she got the title mixed up and she said “two tickets for the happy dinosaur”. the worker guy who was selling the tickets just stared at her and said, deadly serious and passionately “do you mean the *good* dinosaur? cause the dinosaur isn’t happy, it’s more like the depressed dinosaur, he loses his dad, gets separated from his family and he almost starves in the first 15 minutes.” it was honestly hilarious and i’ll never forget it, unlike the plot of this movie

Arlo’s dad death is one of the laziest death scenes I’ve seen. His death scene was done just for shock value and it wasn’t a meaningful death like a betrayal or sacrifice. He died because he and Arlo went on a journey in a rainstorm. If he died because of Arlo’s incompetent and cowardice, that’d have been so much better. Also, why do we not see the mother or siblings reaction and why did they never seem to care that Arlo has been missing for who-knows-how-long. Gosh this movie could’ve been so much better. It had beautiful landscapes and some emotional moments and I like that Spot didn’t speak during the movie actually but the writing really fell flat.

Not just that, Arlo's dad practically died because of his own stupidity! It was a very good idea to chase the pest a.k.a. Spot through a storm while also losing track of him. And what did he get? Arlo got injured and he got himself killed. The logical thing to do was wait for Spot to return (he does so in the next scene, since they have plenty of food). But of course, nobody acknowledges this. Never speak ill of dead parents in Disney movies!

I know they pretty much ripped off the death from The Lion King, but the key element that made Mufasa's death so much sadder: Mufasa was his own character, not just the protagonist's dad, who was there to fill in the space for 'dad'. His relationship with his brother, his philosophy, his leadership and his own individual parenting style were clearly communicated. He pretty much embodies how (most) of us view our dads at Simba's age - as the greatest man alive. None of this was present in The Mediocre Dinosaur

I just really don’t like the character design. The backgrounds are so impressive, but the dinosaurs are just so cartoonish. They’re not even cartoonish in a way that’s cute, they just look weird. The Good Dinosaur was such a missed opportunity. It could have been one of Pixar’s most memorable movies. A story about cavemen and dinosaurs living at the same time, as well as a story of a scared kid learning to not be afraid is a cool concept for a film. but there just isn’t anything about the characters or story in execution that makes it memorable or worthwhile. The whole premise is wasted. The idea was "What if dinosaurs and humans lived alongside each other?", but the execution was just "What if dinosaurs had dogs?". Spot was just a human-looking dog. They could have made Spot any species, and nothing would change. It's like the goal was to make a coming-of-age movie, but one part of the creating team wanted to make a dinosaur movie, one part wanted to make a boy-and-his-dog movie, one part wanted a western, and they all compromised in the worst way.

I don’t like how much they wasted the concept of humans and dinosaurs co-existing with each other, and seeing their interactions. The fact that Spot acts like a dog really bothers me since it completely disregards the the fact that Spot is a human. They should’ve made him bipedal and at least capable of things humans could do back then, such as make weaponry out of rocks and start fires. This movie is literally just a test for landscapes, and it takes such a good premise and mangles it. If they wanted to test landscapes, don’t take a shit on a genuinely good premise and don’t make it a theatrical release; considering this movie has barely any plot.

I remember watching this film when I was yougner, and having little take away, but I still was able to connect to it in moments; overcoming hardships, making friends, learning and growing as a person when confronted with scary situations, etc; but really there was no MASSIVE takeaway like I was able to get from other films, but that doesn't mean I didn't love this ANY less. I was still able to pick up on the kindheartedness of the dad in showing him a softer side and allowing Arlo a new perspective at something he found scary and I carried that with me, so I personally hold a lot of sentiment to this film!! Outside of the bad writing, cliche'd plot, and annoying lead who just screams for most of the movie, one of the most jarring things I don't think people acknowledge is just how horrible the dinosaur designs are compared to the rest of the animals and environments. Nah, you're not the only one, I find it annoying too, it was annoying in Frozen and it's annoying in The Good Dinosaur. If you want your character that is not a dog to act like a dog give them a reason for the weird behaviour... they could explain Spot's acting like a dog because he was eaised by wolves or something, but the other cavemen also howled and acted doglike... they should have either stuck with Arlo and dog plot or made adjustments when switching Spot's species. That Spot was treated like a pet did not really bother me so, I figured since dinosaurs are more evolved and intelligent they would look upon other species as us humans do - we might love our pets, but we don't consider them equals (for the most part). When Arlo and Spot start communicating and start developing a kind of friendship it's actually a clever commentary on our own relationship toward animals... the message would be stronger IMO if Spot actually acted like a human more...

I don't consider this movie terrible, but I find it incredibly disappointing. They could have done so much with the idea of intelligent dinosaurs forming a society. Also, to this day I'm mad about the fact that the toyline of this movie has species such as Ankylosaurus, Triceratops and Stegosaurus, and these toys have NAMES, yet these characters do NOT appear in the movie! The toyline lied! Again, wasted opportunity. Also also, because of this, the world, as beautiful as it is, feels so... empty... Besides Arlo and his family, the T.rexes, the raptors, the old Styracosaurus and the pterosaurs, there's barely any dinosaurs and prehistoric creatures crawling around. The Land Before Time and Disney's Dinosaur showed a much larger variety of species but this movie has fairly empty landscapes with few creatures inhabiting them. The movie would be way better if they actually included more dinosaur species and showed actual worldbuilding, showing a society of intelligent dinosaurs living together as a community, with the Apatosaurs being the backbone of the community, doing most of the farming tasks, with Stegosaurs and Triceratops doing other tasks in the community, such as carrying loads or pushing stuff, and the Ankylosaurs could be miners, breaking rock and ore with their tails, and hadrosaurs like Parasaurolophus could be lookouts, alerting the community of danger with their head crests, and Therizinosaurs could help out by using their long claws to till the soil or cut down crops... ugh! So much wasted potential!

I agree, I also love your idea on the movie’s worldbuilding better than what we actually got 😒. But ironically The Good Dinosaur’s original story (Bob Peterson’s take) was supposed to have something like this to build on it’s premise. But due to some story problems Pixar replaced him with his partner Peter Sohn who then decided to scrap the story and characters in order to start again with a more simple story. So on one hand perhaps a simple story could’ve helped them not get confused with the movie’s plot, but on the other hand having a simple story about a boy and his dog in the old west is no excuse to wasting your concept about dinosaurs in the first place especially since the more you think about the more you start to realize that the boy & his dog plot and dinosaur idea could’ve been told in their own separate movies.

He went too far in his conquest of his fears and became a bastard and murderer, pretending to be good by rescuing people and allowing the storm to rule his life in a different way. Like every time I look at Arlo, I just see an extremely deformed dinosaur that rightly shouldn't have lived for as long as he did. Heck, it's a miracle he can even walk. Sorry, letting realisim get in the way. Dinosaurs existed earlier than humans and as the movie showed that the meteor didn't hit the earth so with time dinosaurs started adapting slowly where humans started existing slowly. It literally shows dinosaurs adapting with time and the human learning slow by slow and even though it's not going to go over most of your.

IMO, Having Henry die doesn’t really spark any emotion, since A) He barely has any presensce. And B) Compared to Mufasa, who forgave Simba for his mistakes, Henry kept constantly pressuring Arlo and even took him out in the middle of the storm, thus getting himself killed! 😬😬😬😬 🌩🌊

You can really tell they wanted to push toys which is neutral, but they focused so much on making the characters toyetic that they forget to give them any distinct traits to set them apart from every other cartoony dinosaur. I swear I had like five generic brand little kid dinosaur toys that looked very, very similar to Arlo, maybe a different color. That isn't exactly great for getting people to want to buy your designs. They couldn't even pick an interesting sauropod to base them on, and it's not like all sauropods looked like Littlefoot, some had long whip tails, others had cool neck frills and spines and they didn't even give them distinct markings beyond some very faint mottling, Sauropods aren't the single most interesting dinosaurs in the world but they could have done SOMETHING to make the family look interesting. The one T rex and the pet collector were neat looking though.

I personally like the movie, but I feel the reason I don’t rewatch it or argue for people to see the good In it is because I dislike arlo. Usually main characters that I dislike are fine enough, but arlo even before I watched the movie just annoyed me to no end. I’m kinda sick of the ‘scared: whiny/ incompetent main character’ thing and arlo is all of those with no personality, so it’s hard to root for him. I just wanted the dad back and to see that his mommas doing alright

I was wondering where the fuck were the siblings during all this? They didn't have much of a reaction when there own dad died. Did they even help their mom when Arlo went on his adventure for worth? Like that kind of bothered me at the end they didn't have much of a point after the dad's death except being minimized to background supporting characters...

I can relate to being scared of things all the time. Seeing a scared character overcome their fears and achieving personal growth is something that strikes a chord with me and gives me hope that I can do the same. I definitely see how a character like that can be annoying, but I guess him being relatable was a saving grace for me.

This movie, like Brave, had around 6 different directors(not working at the same time by the way) and it shows. It was John Lasseter micro-managing everything again. This movie also has a feel of the uncanny valley to me, the realistic backgrounds with the extremely cartoony characters look way off. It's a strange project for them to FLEX what they can do with CG textures.

One thing that really bothers me about this movie is that they never explained why the sauropod family needed to raise the chicken things. Like this one human is apparently eating so much they might starve but they keep willingly giving their food to these chickens? Are they eating the eggs? I thought they were herbivores? My best guess is that they trade the eggs to carnivorous/omnivorous dinos but we don't see any evidence of that and they don't seem to have anything they couldn't have made themselves so idk. Makes me wish they went with the original concept of "Zootopia but with dinosaurs" but then again we probably wouldn't have gotten those awesome nature shots if that were the case so... again idk.

But the film itself is so ....lackluster, it's honestly a _boring film._ Movies have become super easy for me to predict because it's the same thing over and over, and I saw EVERYTHING in this movie happening before it even played out on screen. the designs are definitely one of my least aspects of this film. They all feel way too safe, they didn't take any risks here and opted to give the public more generic looking dinosaurs when in reality these animals were far more beautiful and diverse than we can imagine, especially when you put feathers and extra soft parts into the mix. just think about how beautiful some birds are today, you know, the living dinosaurs. And I'm not really sure why there would be humans and buffalo since uh, they couldn't have evolved if non-bird dinosaurs didn't die out. Oh and the writing was pretty bleh. At least the VAs tried.

I think it would have been interesting to see a metaphor for traumatized young adults seeking solace in any sense of security they find, and occasionally being lured into cults. This group seems to find strength in the very thing that traumatized Arlo. That could have been very tempting for someone who’s been weak his entire life. But then he could have had the personal strength to avoid the cult and work through his trauma in a healthy way. Edit: fixed grammar

I would love if they introduce or at least mention Quetzalcoatlus as well, being the biggest flying reptile around the size of adult T. rex, the other pterodactyl would see them as some sort of worship figure, or the avatar of the storm, if you will, it tied perfectly with its name being based on Aztec deity of winds and rain. Not to mention that it does live in same era as T. rex, and coincidentally, in area dominated by sauropod, as well (Alamosaurus, which what Arlo species should've been, considering Apatosaurus has long extinct before K-T Extinction event)

As a dinosaur nerd I realized some things that Pixar got wrong with the dinosaurs; Arlo‘s dad has the body of a brachiosaurus even though the rest of Arlo’s family are apatosauruses? Also the first few long necked dinosaurs now the prologue are really outdated. I also didn’t like the overall design of Arlo because he felt too cartoonish compared to some of the other dinosaurs in the film. It just felt really rushed and basic. Something also felt weird with the pacing.

To be perfectly honest, this movie made me appreciate disney's Dinosaur that much more, a movie that came out over 20 years ago now. That movie has stellar animation that still holds up, amazing soundtrack, amazing voicework, and is one of their darker toned movies, even if the plot is on the predictable side, its the way that movie handled it is why it's my most rewatched movie. This movie...was just.. eh. very eh and boring. Sam elliot was good though.
