Alright now that we know what some of the cards do, let's see if I can figure out what the heck THIS SPECIFIC DECK does...something with owls and damage or something...we'll find out.

It’s very appropriate that Sean chose this deck, because if you showed him Owlonius’ art without any other context there’s a good chance he’d call them Owlonius anyway.

Imagine him playing a wild version of this. I run a list with Alignment, Gloop + Summons and Anacondra, so you can draw and play your 40 card list in a single turn. It can deal ~250-1000ish dmg with 1 spell and 1 copy effect at (if you solar any of them.)

The Microsoft Paint part of this video was amazing. I loved how Day9 was able to walk through the different scenarios and finally land at the lethal combo. It would have been tough to see that in-game with limited time, even for someone who has been playing the game regularly.

Kinda wonder how Kripp would do in constructed these days. Haven't seen him play anything other than Battlegrounds in years and those cards are completely different to the level of the battlegrounds being just a straight up different game than classic hearthstone.

@@enlightendbel I don't think Kripp ever was that good at constructed, i remember watching him play arena like 90% of the time, it seems like he really shines at evaluating random cards in varying contexts & envoirments, while constructed is mostly played before the game starts (meta analysis, tech picks, optimal lines of play)

I had a similar experience, we had a hill called dead man's hill that had a steep decline and ended in a sharp right turn in front of a 5 ft drop into a rocky creek. It was called dead man's hill because people in cars and on motorcycles used to die there all the time. anyways my friend and I decided to ride bikes down the hill because we were 11 and stupid. it went great the first few times as we just rode our breaks the whole way down and kept our speed slow enough. eventually it became a bit of a competition on who was a scaredy cat and who would go faster. after a round of being scaredy cat I decided my honor was on the line, and instead of breaking, I cranked my 10 speed to full speed and started pedaling as hard as I could. about halfway down the bike started shaking like a bronco, and I panicked. I slammed the breaks with all the force I could muster, and learned that I could fly. I watched the ground drift away, and felt a moment of calm, the shaking was gone and everything felt weightless. then the bottom of the hill started rushing towards me, and the realization that my bike had somehow flown higher and further than I had. I tore my pants wide open from belt to sock and the sleeve off my shirt. which is fine because I was also bleeding all over them and they were ruined anyways. my bike was in the creek handlebars twisted and cockeyed, tire bent in a strange crescent moon. my friend rushed over eyes wide, and only started breathing again when I asked if I had died. eventually he fished my bike out of the creek for me and we began the 15 minute walk home with me leaving a trail of blood drops through the neighborhood. once we were about two houses away from my house my friend wished me luck in dealing with my parents and rode his bike home faster than I had ever seen him ride. my mother was not impressed, not only was I all torn up, we were late going somewhere, I had a quick shower, got slathered in iodine and bandages, and thrown in the back of car being told I'd be fine. they of course new I'd be fine because I had already been to the hospital 4 times for other worse injuries by that point in my life, but those are other stories I don't remember as well.

As a fellow Rogue player and mana cheat enjoyer. I immediately looked for reducing the owl first. Because that's the most ducebag thing to do. For me, learning is the most fun part of playing competitive games. And annoying the shit out of the opponent as a close second. Winning is the side effect of learning.

about the winrate, it's mostly for high end matches, not for lower level where mistakes are plentiful. a 46% winrate deck in 7 can do well over it's statistic. Though the warrior armor deck is absolutely horrible to play against.

lmao what a great watch. i too came back to check out the game recently and it is absolute nonsense. First the UI exploded with 10000 things I didn't know or care about, Eventually I found the regular ladder and found that every deck was some sort of exodia wombo combo on turn 6, and if they didn't they were probably just a bot (apparently official or unofficial!).. and just as I was figuring out what everything actually did, the new set released and all the decks I built stopped working. I have no idea how people enjoy playing this game anymore, everything was so random and crazy compared to before.

That first game was so painful to watch. You know that feeling in TCGs when your opponent plays a good 2drop and you don't have an answer right away and it just snowballs out of control and you just lose without being able to do anything? HS dev team: "let's make that the core philosophy of the entire Paladin class!"

59:00 The big thing I take away from this scenario is to be on the lookout for when you have a pile of damage but need to find a way to cast it all. You have a billion damage but not a lot of mana. If you Phial once before Owling, that Phial isn't getting full Owl value... but it doesn't matter because the limiter is mana -- effectively you need the OWl to get Phial value not the other way around. The fact that Phialing when it deals 4 creates a net savings of 1 mana is the most important thing to recognize because it relieves pressure at the bottleneck.

Hmm, enemy took 8 damage from phial, was at 30, if you had double-cast phial for another 8, then cover artist, you'd have 16 spell power and one mana, so no lethal. Oooh, but Phial into Owl means you save one mana for 2x 16 Living Roots damage + 4 phial damage instead of 8. 36 damage total. Was that enough? 😅 Edit: Somehow didn't figure you could double-phial for 44 damage!

I'm shocked to hear what Sean said about magic free to play. Out of the 3 card games I've played (magic, runtera, hearthstone) it was BY FAR my worst FTP experience and the hardest to actually build a competitive deck. It wasn't even close. At least in hearthstone there is a dust system to swap out cards, even if it's a horrible exchange rate. In MTGA sometimes you need to get 4 of the same mythic to have enough for a deck and if you don't have wildcards, which are very rare as a FTP, you are just screwed. There's nothing you can do about it but spend more and more money praying for the super rare mythic wild cards. And then you are terrified of spending the wild cards because they are so rare, and it doesn't help that they ban cards that often nuke the best decks and if you crafted rare support cards for that deck you just lost everything you invested in it. Even after I decided that I liked MTG and committed to spending 60 dollars an expansion, I still felt like I barely had any cards to enjoy deck building, it took everything to just keep 1 or 2 competitive decks. All that for a full AAA game cost every 3 months. I loved the gameplay but I'll never go back to it again. The ONE saving grace, which is where I suspect is where Sean is making his point, is that if you are very good at the game, and treat sealed drafts like a second job, you can in theory get a large collection of cards by grinding hundreds of sealed drafts. If you love drafts then great (though you have to draft way differently if you plan to use drafts to collect cards rather than enjoy the draft), but if you don't then you are better off getting a minimum wage job and just buying packs, it will get you there faster. If it's not clear the corporate side of MTGA has broken my heart for a game I really enjoyed so it hurts a bit to see someone like Sean endorse it as a good experience😅.
@franklinnartz1381
@franklinnartz1381 3 ай бұрын
I've got the opposite experience. If you know what deck you want and you'll only need 1 or 2 good decks, it's incredibly easy to craft them with wildcards alone. I personally like experimenting and building jank decks, I seem to run out of wildcards after a while, but I definitely had enough to craft 2 full meta decks if I had netdecked.

is it just a me thing, or just magic main players? im pretty sure if i took a break from any other card game and played mtg and came back, i would still understand the key differences of how spells work between mtg and any other card game, yes? the creatures in mtg are considered spells, but im still able to understand them as monster, minion, or creatures, and even coming back to a simpler game like hearthsone or eternal card game, the differences would still be clear, right? any other youtuber mtg mains out there still stuck with creature as spells mindset when they go to other games?

It's not that they "don't understand," it's that they have to remind themselves constantly because their default is different. Keep in mind, content creators put in a LOT more time into these games, so their habits are probably far more ingrained than yours.
