It absolutely should be illegal anywhere to trash organic waste instead of contributing to either food banks or [industrial] composting. I'm thankful for every dumpster diver and/or person who supports composting. THANK YOU whoever is reading and part of this! Edit: Also all these "wooden" crates...

Please make us LOTS more dumpster diving vids, Gittemary. This one was fab! 💞 But also, for someone living in South Africa, quite stressful I must admit. I found it SO distressing to see the scale of food and plants wasted. Which I know is only a fraction of what occurs elsewhere in the Northern Hemisphere, especially in North America. 😱💔

I work at a major retail store here in the U.S and I’m proud to say that they donate a lot of their culled fruits and vegetables and also damaged packaged food that’s still edible , like boxes of pasta that are dented for example. Also other stuff in general that’s either out of season or packages that are dented. They do good with not throwing things away but having the food bank or donating to other nonprofits that could use these things.

When I worked at a grocery/health supplements store, the prices were high, so of course the “shrink” was high. It was more than our staff could eat 😅 So we were able to connect with a local food bank to pick up the rest. Took a lot of arguing with corporate to allow us to do that 🤦🏻‍♀️

I love dumpster diving! I live in a very rich city and people throw away carpets, beautiful furniture and tons of other home goods all. the. time. I’ve diverted hundreds of pounds of textiles from the landfill.. their loss is my gain!

We have a great charity in my town, that i volunteer with. It's called a community fridge. We go to all the supermarkets in the town every couple of days, and they give us the food that would ordinarily be wasted and incinerated for bio-fuel. We have a unit with some donated fridges and freezers in it. Three days a week, we set up a few tables outside of the unit, with all the food laid out. Anyone can bring a bag and fill it up with whatever they want, for free! It's basically a cleaner, more sanitary and fairer alternative to dumpster diving. Obviously the elderly, and those with mobility problems are unlikely to be able to climb into dumpsters, and many people don't feel safe or comfortable doing it. We make it easier for everyone, by doing the messy part, leaving everyone else to just come and collect what they need :)

Wow, that is amazing! I definitely would love to see more dumpster diving. I am new to your channel and have been binge watching 😃it is actually because of you, I put my shame on a shelf and convinced my hubby to start coming to a high end grocery store dumpster. OMG! In the last two weeks since started, we've gone 4 times and already found over $500 of food! And it is a small store and we have taken maybe just 1/10 of what is in the dumpster🤯 like you say, we are grateful to have it, but it is INSANE how much is thrown out 🤯🤯🤯 I am rebranding my bin visits as Food rescues 🙌 has a better vibe 💃 Thank you so much for your inspiration and work on sustainability. I am your new fan from Canada 🇨🇦 😍

In Germany it's actually illegal to go dumpster diving. A good (and legal) alternative ist beeing a foodsaver through foodsharing for anyone who might be interested. The partner stores give us their throwouts on a voluntary basis and we take everything with us that is still edible and share it with a bunch of people! 😊

For people wanting to do this in the UK, I really recommend doing your research. There's a huge amount of grey area when it comes to the legality surrounding it. Even if a bin is outside, it doesn't necessarily mean it is on public property and you can still get done for trespassing. Plus different laws apply to domestic trash like people's bins or a hired skip.

I have never dumpster dived for food, but I share the trash and recycling room with lots and lots of other students and have found a lot of really nice stuff, just by taking a look when I trash or recycle something myself. I have found so much ceramics, pots and pans, and clothes! I can even sell them on and get a small sum for it, which is super nice as a student.

Thanks for making a video about this and drawing attention to the massive amounts of waste that stores produce! Dumpster diving can be such a great way to counter that waste (and get lots of delicious and free food) and it's important to talk about it more openly 😊 Here in Sweden the rules are similar to Denmark so I go dumpster diving a lot and I sadly also see a lot of avocados being wasted!

I’m really looking forward to your summer BBQ video. I find there is not much content for plant-based summer BBQ meals/recipes. When you were talking about feeling dirty/gross this reminded me of the saying “Life begins at the edge of your comfort zone.” (and in this case, with gloves.). I did not know that you can freeze avocados… if you have a minute can you tell us how you prep them for freezing, and also how you use them once they are thawed?? YEASS… more dumpster diving videos please and thank-you. Have a lovely time at the cottage. 🌎💦Ⓜary💕

YES!!!! I just went dumpster diving or the first time a few weeks ago. It was so much fun! We were a bit anxious because we had never done it before, but we found some good stuff. No food, unfortunately, because we live in a decent sized city and most of the places that would have had food had dumpsters that were attached to the buildings with no way to get into them, or they were locked up :( We definitely plan on going again, though! I found some great shelves for our new zero-waste store we're starting, which was super exciting! Please do more videos like this!!

Thank you for this! I think more people need to see the amount of food wasted each day. It’s so tragic to see this when there are so many families experiencing food insecurity. A friend of mine told me that stores are not allowed to give out food as it is a liability (this is probably US- specific). While it was all heart wrenching, there were a few screen shots where I saw meat thrown out. The poor animals that are bred purely for food are thrown in the garbage. Horrifying. Thank you for showing this and for playing a part in reducing food waste! If only the powers that he could get their act together to create better systems for reducing this!
